bunch of whiners will be going OHHH AHHH OHH AWESOME when schiller explains everything on the keynote day. mark my words.

remember guys, our brain's quality can't reach the level of apple r&d team of innovation, so keep quiet and just wait for the keynote before we all go cry baby.

Every face detection I've seen so far is just b.s. tech.

They are unreliable, they are slow, you can't wear sunglasses in the summer, it just sucks.

Unless Apple has invented a new world wonder of face tech, it's gonna be far inferior to touch id.

No sunglasses, no deal for me.

OMG, the sky is falling, the sky is falling! Calm down and stop the FUD. Apple's face detection tech is not based on what you've previously seen, and you clearly have not been following what Apple has been developing in that area.

I think we're ALL getting a bit ahead of ourselves here.

"infrared face detection" and all the API's featured actually can be JUST for better more acurrate depth in pictures and in video for a fixed focal point.

EDIT:

Further to this ...
Apple has reportedly been trying to incorporate Touch ID fingerprint sensing beneath the device's display, but some rumors have suggested Apple has had difficulty achieving that goal and may instead switch to facial recognition for authentication purposes.

Facial recognition would affect not only TouchID but ApplePay both for local payments and also for online payments and the upcoming ApplePay within iMessage for sending money to another iMessage person!

How exactly are you wtih your apple iphone 8 supposed to make a payment at a point of sale ApplePay terminal when you're holding the phone TO the console and your face right in front of it? Nose pictures anyone?!

That would be QUIET weird. Think about this one.

They've developed nothing, they bought the company RealFace and YES we have seen the RealFace demos.

That is so adorable! Believing Apple has developed nothing in that area. Apparently you are not aware Apple acquires many companies every year to augment their in-house development, over a wide range of technologies. What is the source of your specific inside information and Apple's plans?

And still, despite the above, you come out with your sky is falling FUD, saying you've seen all of the previous face detection technologies and they're all being BS tech.

They bought exactely 1 single company in the area of face recognition called RealFace. RealFace has a have a finished product not research or ideas, a finished product, which they already demonstrated. THAT is what Apple bought.

They did the same with Touch ID, they bought AuthenTec and implemented their Product unchanged. The AuthenTec guys continued to work on their product at Apple.

THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH THAT btw

We'll see. Getting rid of the giant chin and forehead would be welcome, but at the cost of TouchID....not sure.

Oh come on... the chin and forehead are smaller than the width of your thumb.

Is it really a problem? :p

And I agree... losing TouchID just to get reduced top-n-bottom bezels doesn't seem like a good idea.

Exactly one company? You don't know what Apple has been working on, or other companies Apple has acquired, besides the one mentioned above. Again, unless you have inside information you're willing to share.

And still, with that acquisition, you believe Apple's facial recognition will be a flop, spouting sky is falling FUD. Just like Apple acquiring AuthenTec and resulting in TouchID. No doubt when TouchID was leaked you felt the same way. Right? Cuz all previous fingerprint ID was BS tech...

Dont forget that Apple has acquired 4 startups last couple years to make this facial recognition technology is ready and flawlessly applied in nowadays market.

They are LinX, RealFace, PrimeSense & Emotient. These 4 startups core technology is 3D sensing, Imaging & emotion recognition using AI.

I believe facial recognition would be Apple's standard in its next product for years to come.

No, what you said was: "Every face detection I've seen so far is just b.s. tech. They are unreliable, they are slow, you can't wear sunglasses in the summer, it just sucks. facialID will work from angles, so when you have your iphone sitting on table near you will work, it will work even if you have transparent glasses or sunglasses , and it will scan when you are using your iphone, from second to second, like mail push, to always know that is you using your phone and not somebody else
i heard that can be changed, from 1 second to 10 or 30 seconds
I think this is brilliant and much more secure than touchID

Agree. The solution will be robust with more collected metrics than TouchID. Also... It will be nice not having to remove my gloves to access my phone in the winter or when I'm working outdoors. A huge plus.

Feel sorry for the people responsable for this leak at Apple... . They gonna get some heat.

I doubt it. I wouldn't be surprised if this was some type of intentional leak. Of course that is anecdotal, but as we approach closer to the iPhone launch, sometimes we see these coded leaks that I believe Apple teases the public and creates more hype up until the iPhone launch.
