Every face detection I've seen so far is just b.s. tech.

They are unreliable, they are slow, you can't wear sunglasses in the summer, it just sucks.

Unless Apple has invented a new world wonder of face tech, it's gonna be far inferior to touch id.

No sunglasses, no deal for me.

I had the same thoughts when a fingerprint reader was rumored on a phone...but then Apple unveiled TouchID which set a new bar on fingerprints readers.

I doubt very much that they solved the sunglasses problem. But I do hope they did.

By the way Apple just bought the company that created TouchID, AuthenTec.
They didn't develop TouchID.

This is all great news except for one thing, the TooClose/TooFar api's!

If you need those qualifiers you already failed (in comparison to touch id).

So the cutout on the top is final. Hope Apple make it like this on the white front.

As far as I understand from rumors on the web, there might not be a white iPhone 8. Personally I prefer getting a white iPhone 8 over the black.

We'll see what happens, I just hope its not small like the 4.7", I can't go back to small screen phones anymore!

I also expect Samsung go all out on the Note 8 to make up for last year's disaster. Might be tempted to switch, had all the notes from Note 1 to 5. Gonna be an interesting couple of months.
It will be smaller than the plus however the screen will be slightly larger. I'm willing to give it a try despite it being an "S" variant year.

So, it’s confirmed. This is the new iPhone design! Not that exciting :(
What in the hell do you want?

I wonder how facial detection will work (if at all) in low light situations. I can't see how it would be much use.

Infrared light. Look it up

what are you even talking about concerning the "S" year? That has absolutely nothing to do with the new iPhone.

Also, I'm trying to figure out how watching videos is going to be on a phone with rounded corners like that.... Will the video just be displayed with cropped corners?? That's really awkward....
There will never be an Apple device that has lit pixels in rounded corners. If a video is playing on the OLED device, the top and bottom are black. However, they aren't just black during video playback, they're black 100% of the time. Yes, that's right, the top and bottom portions of the display will always be black, akin to the Touchbar.

What about those of us who wear a head covering or who cannot always look at the phone while opening it?
If you don't look at the phone when opening it, you didn't need to open it. The device is a device you look at when you use it.

Every fingerprint scanner was garbage before Touch ID.

You've never had a device with multiple sensors and an A11 chip processing instantaneous infrared light data. The light travels at the speed of light just to let you know. The processing of the data is the trick, and with the A11, it's a joke clearly. It shoots the light, the light reflects off the face and is captured in the sensor and analyzed in data which instantly maps your face in 3D, and subsequent captures reference this face which is unique to the scale at which they are detecting points of reference.

Question, has anyone bought an iPhone 7 or is planning to between now and September?
People afraid that this phone will be too expensive.

What about those of us who wear a head covering or who cannot always look at the phone while opening it?
You'll be out of luck, as those who wear hand covering are with Touch ID. If this rumor turns out to be true, you just bought a losing lottery ticket. Them's the breaks.

That design is going to be great. Who knows how available it will be, especially in BFE Michigan. Hah. :(

I wouldn't be surprised if this was deliberate. Samsung moved up the launch of the Note 8 to steal some thunder from the iPhone 8.

How would the Note 8 steal any of Apple's 'thunder', when the Note 8 traditionally launches in August anyways? No matter what, the Note 8 still launches before the iPhone does. So either way, it's going to have attention until the September keynote.

But Rest assured, Samsung will have their moment and Apple will have theirs for both phone releases.

A more than five year old Tim Cook quote.

And if you take him at his word, doubling-down is a single side bet on a particular hand that you think is good.

Lol you’re right. It was a single issue. Are you joking?

Happy with the leak or find with the design, it's nearly assured now isn't it, a bit off topic but just wondering what some of you might think bout the price of the phone and a few of the specs, i mean is the hardware going to be mostly the same as the 7s, apart from design, shouldn't it be a bit better considering the supposed price difference, like better cpu/gpu and any know if the oled will be full rgb?

I hope that bit to the left and right of the earpiece on the top is just a notification area like the Touch Bar on the MacBooks and not usable screen real estate for apps.
There's a 0% chance it would be usable in the sense that the app would go in that space. There will probably be API for the space which the space will be black like the Touchbar.

No it does not however I usually never upgrade my iPhone on "s" years. I will make an exception this year. Love the new design. I doubt it will be called the iPhone 8.

Or perhaps it'll be like watching a old tube based television. We had rounded corners for decades :)

Train it to recognize you with the head covering.

And if you're unlocking it, you're likely also going to be looking at it.

Seems like it'd be easier to "compel" someone to unlock their device with FaceID than with a passcode or TouchID. Like, "Oops... did I just point the sensor at your face and unlock the phone?? Oh how handy..."

Not a fan. Prankster friends could have a field day with this.

Maybe it's got 2-factor authentication and you have to mouth the words "open Sesame" while looking at it.

That's true but Apple had nothing to do with the development of Touch ID.

They just bought AuthenTec, it's their invention, they developed it (and continue to inside Apple).

When it comes to face detection:

Apple acquired RealFace a few months ago, I hope RealFace developed face detection better than what we have seen so far from others. It's definitely way slower than touch id in their demos.

Here's a User Demo of the face detection company Apple bought.
