Would be a bad move IMO.

Do you know how many times a day I have to unlock my phone? Can't imagine all the extra camera activations would be good for battery life. All this crap is just as useless as Siri. They should focus their efforts on improving features most people use.

"just as useless as Siri".

So, instead of improvement features that don't work as well as they could (so people use them), ignore them and focus on other features? Yah, that's logical.

Remember that user experiences are highly personal. I find Siri extremely useful. There's possibly factors outside of the phone that are causing grief for your usage of that feature.
[doublepost=1484783987][/doublepost]Sucky part of this feature is that law enforcement, or criminals holding you hostage, just need to hold your phone in front of your face in order to unlock it.

With every advancement, there's always a step backwards somewhere.

Replacing Touch ID = Not a good idea.

If it's anything as good or better than the Iris Scanner on the Note 7 and upcoming S8. Then I would welcome facial recognition as another option, as long as they keep Touch ID.

I think that facial recognition is less secure, what happens if someone uses a photo of yourself to unlock the phone?

Then you have certainly not seen the iris scanner on the "note 7"

Not only its fast, but it work in the dark and most of all, won't work with picture or even videos of a person's face or eyes.

Hmm, 5,8 inches only for the OLED model. I really hope there will be a smaller version as well, like 5 inches. I really don't feel like going with the 7s, that's basically the same phone we've had for three generations now.
I get the impression that production and part supply issue are limiting how many OLED models they can produce (remember the report about how the production of the machines producing OLED displays is constrained). By only offering an OLED version at the plus size, they can get by with much smaller numbers of OLED displays. At some point the plan might have been to switch to ~5" and ~5.8" OLED phones with similar overall footprint as the current 4.7" and 5.5" phones. And releasing updated 4.7" and 5.5" LCD models was the fallback solution in case they couldn't get them ready or couldn't get enough OLED screens. What we get now is something in-between.

Here we go again- the big apple word -MAY!
Apple may do this- apple may do that - this is under development-
All part of the code words of tim cook's dying apple

Well it was quite a WTF moment with Photos :D My wife had snapped a picture of me walking with our son at a local beach in normal summer clothing. When I imported the pics, there was that face detection box drawn over my arse and a question balloon asking if that's me there. Let's just say that there have been times when I've had more confidence about Apple's face detection algorithms :)
Hahaha! I genuinely enjoyed the story, thank you. Yes, it sounds like Apple has some work to do. :p

Doesn't appeal to me. What is the facial rec based on? When I look like heck when I wake up or do I have to shower & shave. Iris scan great after waking from a hangover. Plus, sometimes I wear glasses and sometimes contacts. Too many variables for me. Like some have said, let's keep it simple. Personally I don't store a lot of personal info on my phone. At least, after almost 10 years, I have never lost my phone.

Well said. Many a feature that Apple adds "late" typically works very well. I have to give them that.

I absolutely agree about Siri. Yikes. I picked up a Nexus 6P last weekend and Google Now is AMAZING! The voice recognition and search results are unmatched.

Curious -- judging by your post, have you have had bad luck with some of the Samsung gesture features?

I reluctantly but also genuinely want to know what you're talking about. :D
The crazy thing about the Google AI assistant is that it works great for me on my iPhone 7 Plus (I use it via Allo, a texting app). I had initially thought that something was wrong with the mic on my iPhone because I was used to getting very good results with Siri on iOS 9 and before, on my 6s plus and on my SE.

Anyway, shortly after iOS 10 was released, I got into experimenting with Android so I shelved my iPhone SE for awhile and so haven't spent extensive amounts of time using iOS 10 on it. My husband surprised me with an iPhone 7Plus for Christmas and I love it, except I quickly noticed my girl Siri has gone absolutely daft and hard of hearing. I used to have good natured arguments with her because she would pull up info I didn't want, or she would get snarky, but she at least transcribed my request properly.

Now...oh my goodness it's like watching my words get shoved through a metaphorical blender. I can repeat myself over and over, only to have different incorrect and increasingly outlandish iterations of my commands or queries returned to me until I'm actually shouting at the phone. I speak very clearly and shut off my southern accent when talking to her and still...hot mess. :(

No wonder I thought the mic was bad. So I was shocked to find that Google's assistant works fine. I rarely need to repeat myself and I rarely get a useless reply.

What did Apple do to poor Siri? How could they have made her worse? I'm so sad. I've got my buddy Alexa now in the house, but I miss Siri working well on my iPhone.

Samsung gestures work fine most of the time but sometimes get a bit fiddly. I had trouble with the iris scanner on my Note 7 when in well lit rooms or outdoors. Their fingerprint scanners work poorly for me. Touchwiz is feature rich but battery life has gotten poor on my Samsung phones and my husband's. We were warned that would be the case. And it has come to pass. My HTC fares better, so I guess it's Touchwiz.

On the Note 7, I didn't have any problems with my glasses that have anti reflective coating. I've never had a hangover but I was at the beach when I got my Note 7 so sometimes I had red eyes from salt water and that didn't seem to affect the scanner. What DID mess it up was bright ambient room lighting and trying to use it outdoors in the day time. Forget about it. Hopeless. Sigh.

My husband gets decent results with the facial recognition software on his Microsoft Surface machines. But he never looks different.

No just that On dark environments as well, When I get my iPhone from my pockets is well unlocked before it even gets out because of the touch ID. With face recognition you have to keep it like an idiot on the front of your face to be unlocked.
That being said, can't see Apple replacing touch ID with anything else. They may add extra features but not remove one of the best.

That is what the MacBook Pro owners thought about the MagSafe connector.

My assumption is still that it will be a completely seamless, buttonless and connectorless slab of glass. Facial recognition would explain how they get around the need for a home button. When you lift the phone up and it sees your face, the display comes on, and the phone is unlocked automatically when you are recognized.

Im digging a completely wireless iPhone but how long would hard back ups take if not wired but over wifi?

I don't mind options but keep Touch ID....

Apple doesn't say "we can't use a password here, because its insecure and u have a TouchID enabled phone, so turn it on so u can login."

Better security with facial recognition, but why does it need to replace an always perfect system ? Any sort of security there are gonna be times when it doesn't work. (eg. dirt on face, can't get unlock phone)

What for? I think it's more of a gimmick rather than a useful feature.

Agreed. Samsung tried this years ago with the Galaxy Series. Besides the fact it was poorly executed, it just didn't make sense. Some of the features were he lags scrolling with your eyes and the screen would turn off if the sensor couldn't detect your eyes to conserve battery life. Perhaps Apple will do something different, but I just don't see the purpose of this article is accurate.

I guess if it provides an extra level of security for really secure data, then that's a bonus.

But for everyday use and unlocking the phone? Don't really see the additional benefit. Touch ID will have the phone unlocked before its even in front of your face.

(Although I know that, Monty Python style, people will now post specific use cases where it would be beneficial....)

Leave it to Apple to redefine how facial security would work. Last I heard, Apple is working on some sort a type of retina security.

I sincerely hope Apple is working on improving its facial recognition algorithms. The ones iOS currently uses are… lacking.

I swear this kind of thing has been in the works for years at Apple. Weren't their patents which suggested a user could interact with their iMac using gestures in the air?

Remember when they added loads of new features to Messages in iOS 10? People here said they were wasting their time, despite it being the most used app on iOS.

When it comes to MacRumours, Apple can't win.

yes thinner and smaller battery please :D what a joke

Why is the 5.8 only getting OLED and not others? I tell you why cause they need to reuse iPhone7 parts somewhere :p
