I am a very big Apple fan and love the way everything works together. I always upgrade to the latest phone, but if the starting price of the flagship iphone will $999, that may be a line I'm not willing to cross. I don't mind spending for a quality phone, but a grand could be someone's rent or a car payment and that is just too much for a phone. I will have to take older model phones going forward.

Priorities and utility. Well, not the rent/mortgage. That's a basic necessity. For me, the only purpose of my vehicle is to take me from point A to point B. We'll keep them for 10-20 years.

Meanwhile, electronics is something I enjoy and if I divide the cost of my iOS devices down to an hourly rate, the cost/hour would be measured in cents.

That said, I don't really replace my iPhones yearly and whether I upgrade this year depends on whether I like the features and improvements announced during the keynote.

If they skip the "s" cycle this year and just move to the iPhone 8, that'll make me happy as I have a 7 Plus so there will be a whole year for bugs to be worked out from the new design before I'm ready to upgrade.

I've thought about getting on the "s" cycle for a while; seems they might skip it this year, effectively putting me on the "s" every two years. Hopefully that happens!

an iPhone costing as much as a macbook is outrageous. I think I will keep my iPhone 7 plus until it starts to slow down. Or I will just go back to android.

I find it interesting that a few years ago almost no one knew what an phone costs - you went to your cell provider and paid a bunch of money that included price for phones - now it is done separately because they all compete on only $x a month (bring your own phone or $y a month). Now people really care about phone price - before they cared about total price they paid / month.
Yes 1,000 is too much compared to other items but if it costs 1000 in October -what will it be worth Oct 2019. What will the net cost be for two years? We don't know about 2019 but net cost is really what is important.

Yes, but you forgot that the 1st iphone back in 2007 cost $599 for the 8GB model and $499 for the 4GB and it still locked you in a 2 year contract.

The more I think about the price, the more I think it'll be closer to the Galaxy S8:

In the UK, the S8 goes for £689 and the S8+ goes for for £779. Now knowing Apple, the iPhone 8 will be priced higher than the S8+ due to the 'Apple Tax' and so I predict around a £50 premium to take the starting price of the iPhone 8 to £829. For the larger storage model, on normal iPhone prices it's usually £100 more to get to the next storage tier and so I expect this to be about the same - or slightly more - to take the top storage tier iPhone 8 to a price of £929.

I'm an analyst... yay :Do_O

And I walked out of the AT&T store to a cheering crowd, the first out of that store with the new iPhone.

What a nerd.

Lol :)
I was calling every single store around the area for weeks.
I finally found a place that had 1 left in stock and I got down there very fast.
I get there and Im like hello I just called for the new Apple iPhone you have in stock. Dude is like we have this lady that's ahead of you so if she wants it then its hers because even though you called its first come first serve.
She's like no, Im here cause I have some problems with my cellphone bill.
And then I started celebrating and hopping around like Rocky Balboa :D

Its crazy we live in a world that so many people can justify spending a grand on a smartphone. I mean I get it, and I'm not knocking people that do at all. Its just kind of funny to think about. Maybe I'm getting old I don't know....

I don't know how old a lot of you guys are but how would your parents react if you told them you spent a grand on your phone? Mine literally wouldn't (utter refuse) believe me, I'm sure of that.

I don't have a problem spending 3 grand on a iMac and I use my iPhone infinitely more doing infinitely more important things so it makes sense I should be able to justify the cost in terms of "experience" but man....a grand for smart phone just makes my brain go right to "your current iPhone is working fine" and "how much was that high dollar escort again?".....

And for a grand I would expect to get all day (10+ hours) of usage out of the battery but I guess my expectations are probably too high.

I agree.
Unfortunately battery tech hasn't kept up with cellphone improvements and evolution.
Wish we could see some advances there too so we dont have to keep plugging in or buying any of those added battery cases or additional battery packs and cords.

At this point, it doesn't really matter how good the phone is. 1k starting price is too much. They break, they get stolen, lost. Replacement cost is too high. Hopefully Apple figures it out - or in better terms, hopefully consumers speak with their wallets. You can't blame them for pushing the envelope though. If it sells well and people buy it, iPhone 9 starts at $1099.

I agree.

Battery tech has evolved beyond what we're buying. They don't want to produce all day battery life. You'll never upgrade your phone within the window they want you to.

I'm going to sound like I'm banging on the same old worn out drum but the tech available needs to be accounted for. Smaller processes for the rest of the tech are required to accommodate a larger battery OR make the damn thing 1mm thicker.

I know I know...there will never be enough battery for everyone and why not add 2mm or 3mm or 4mm and so on to fit a larger battery but someone really needs to set a standard in this industry. I long for the day that my life doesn't revolve around charging things. First world problems I guess....

So according to you they have the good battery tech they just don't want to give it to the public. All these companies are holding it away so you can upgrade more often.
You got any other wild conspiracies?:D

That's what I'm saying.
You either make the device bigger or with shorter battery life.
The current tech that the battery takes up over 75% of the space inside the phone is not adequate.

In fairness, the first cellphone cost $3,995 in the 1980s (a lot more after accounting for inflation).

But talking on the phone not connected to wires back then was modern marvel. Not a device that children have in their lockers at school.

As crazy as it sounds, even if the phone cost $1000, people will buy it.

Many plans split the cost into 24 or more payments...that's how people will justify getting it

Even if it doesn't happen with this phone, it's coming on a future iPhone.

I'll likely jump on board if T-Mobile does another free phone with trade. I'll have a 138gb 6s plus to trade. I'd very likely do trade plus $100 as well. MAYBE $200, but nothing north of that.

I realize there are arguments for why the phone may legitimately be this price point but it's going to be extremely hard for me to pull the trigger at $1k after taxes (again, assuming T-Mobile doesn't do a free deal). Looking at that much out of pocket, or even financed, I'd likely have Apple replace my 6s plus battery. That's getting a bit long in the tooth, though performance is absolutely spot on still. Only iPhone I've kept past the one year mark andndont tefret a second.

Proof of what battery type you're talking about and why no manufacturer uses the better battery tech that according to you exists currently and it's ready to be implemented now?
None in smartphones, laptops, handheld gaming systems and everything else out there that has a rechargeable battery installed ?
They all holding it and don't want to release it in order to make you upgrade your iPhone sooner? Great lack of logic....

A lot of people who are buying their iPhone in a 24 months plan, are master in pretending like $1000 is actually just $10.

My price prediction:

USA
64GB - $869
256GB - $1069
512GB - $1169

UK
64GB - £819
256GB - £1019
512GB - £1199
