The problem with that logic is you can't compare what things used to cost and say how great stuff is now. The 1984 mac was $2500 (which is about $5200 in today's dollars). Does that figure have any meaning in helping value a modern computer. You can buy 3 13" touchbar MBP's for about the same price in real dollars as an original base-model mac.

My first VCR was $1500 some time around 1982. Putting it over $4000 in today's dollars. Should we compare that to the value of the AppleTV?

Technology makes things way cheaper over time. The first transatlantic passenger airplane tickets cost more than the average price of a house in London at the time. Airfare is an amazing bargain now too.

TL;DR: You have to look at the value of an iPhone in the modern world where cell phones are under $20 and smartphones under $100. Not compared to phone prices more than 10 years ago.

You're absolutely right, I should have given the subject some more thought. im still not convinced that 1k is worth it for a rumored iPhone, best thing I guess is to wait and see.

Such an american way to think. Cant afford it? Just pay it off monthly and suddenly the price doesnt look so bad!

Why not?

You're gonna be paying a monthly cell service payment for the rest of your life... why not bundle the price of the phone in there too?

The reason why Apple can do this today is because no one, except the handful of suckers who buy unlocked at full retail and think they are beating the system, will see it as $1000. It is $49/mon for 12 months, then trade up and continue.

You mean suckers that have the money to buy things instead of financing everything? Its amazing how an absurd price is more visibly absurd when you hand over hard earned cash instead of saying "sign me up of for the monthly plan". This is why such a large part of the population is in debt up to their ears.

And this price is absurd. I'm sure we'll hear Jony Ive talk about how the paint they used is so special and its the "thinnest" iPhone they've ever made.

I would hope people not purchase the devices at that price. It's insane for something that has an annual refresh cycle.

Unfortunately, people will eagerly go into debt or use the various carrier financing (lease / lease to-own / etc) options which will maintain Apple's pricing.

Yes... there will be a lot of people that buy this thing I'm sure.

and its that price that will make me stop buying apple products after 21 years of being loyal customer. First the iPad Pro and now potentially this.

This is not the same Steve Jobs Apple I used to know

I'm getting more and more disgusted with Apple and the lack of real innovation yet absurd prices. I will wait to see what the real price is and what it actually does before final decision but that this point I'm not planning to drop over a grand on my mobile phone. Add AppleCare to this beast and it is truly absurd. It better be something remarkable or I'm going to seriously look at the Pixel. The two things holding me back are messages and the watch or I might have already tried it.

You could loose your job and then? I personally was raised to not buy something you cant afford. One time in college i was afraid my banking account balance would drop into negative for about a week and it gave me a near heart attack

I don't remember what phones were pre 2007, but did a Motorola or Nokia ever cost upwards of $1000? I mean, maybe the 'old' smartphones did, but they weren't targeted at the masses like today's smartphones are.
$1099 for an iPhone, it's almost as much as a MacBook and pricier than the MBA! I enjoy iOS just as much as any other user here, but I don't know if it's worth that much.

Your point of the iPhone being priced similarly to a MBA or MacBook is what it is because for a lot of people their iPhone IS their computer. And beyond that, it's also likely their only camera, their iPod, their digital wallet, etc.

Heck, I'm going to Europe for a week for work and I'm not bringing anything but my iPhone this time. Mostly this is driven by the fact that I won't be in an office at all and won't need or have the time to pull out my rMBP, let alone my iPad Air, but also because I don't want the hassle of having to check my bag if the gov't forces anything but phones into checked baggage. I'm actually a bit excited to travel sans the extra 4 lbs. of gear and if I have to generate a spreadsheet, document or presentation, at least I can still do that on my 6s+ (albeit painfully slowly).

How much will you pay up front though? its not going to be $0 + $49/month. its probably more like $300-$400 + $49/month

You don't pay up front for these new programs. They just start at whatever the monthly price is. Then you trade up, depends on what carrier. I have Spirt and iPhone Forever and can almost trade my phone in at any time. 2 weeks from getting it or 2 years.

we don't know yet. But i'd pay extra for the fingerprint sensor to be under the display, 3d sensoring tech, and 128gb out of the box.
I agree, but that is a lot of money compared to the s8. It would have to be really impressive functionality. I don't care too much for design.

So add on Apple Care Plus (price for this model unknown), plus sales tax/VAT, and you are looking at (realistically) $1250 USD or more for the low-end model. At that price, you better insure your iPhone by buying a good, strong case and screen protector.

That weird cutout shape at the top looks dreadful. Hope that's not accurate.

What people can afford is based on what they can spend each month. If they can afford $80-90 every month for cell service... they should be ale to afford another $20-30 a month for the device.

Besides... if you lose your job... then you can't pay for ANYTHING. Food, Netflix, your mortgage, etc.

It's not limited to just cell phones.

Price is very reasonable considering the current 256GB jet black iPhone 7 Plus is $969. Only $130 more but you finally get a major redesign to stand out from the last three generations, premium materials and build quality to match the competition, shedding of outdated technology for current OLED display/iris scanning, 2GB/3GB DDR4, more competent Siri, improved camera that's higher than #10 on DxOMark, etc. Other pluses are helping Apple maintain its status as the most profitable company and funding the completion of the great spaceship temple.

This price imo is too high but thankfully all it is is a rumour at the moment.

I honestly can't see the base 128GB iPhone 8 being $1000 which to me in Apple pricing would be £1000 or close to. I can see the price of it starting at the equivalent or slightly more than a 128GB 7+ which is like £819 in the UK, which adding in a bit of extra "Apple Tax" would bring the cost to £849.

Now, to me that is a hell of a lot of money for a phone and due to this I plan on hopping onto the iPhone Upgrade Program which also gives the benefit of AppleCare + which is worth £119 itself.

Also, the new features rumoured do ease that rumoured price tag a bit. We're gonna get:

- New Design (All screen front with very small bezels. GS8 looks incredible and hopefully Apple can do similar if not better)

- OLED Display (On other phones yes and especially beautiful on the GS8, but hopefully with Apple's calibration will look stunning and REALISTIC. Hoping for HDR support)

- True Tone (On iPad Pro 9.7" and I love it)

- Touch ID under screen (Not in any other phone and if it's pulled off well by Apple will be huge)

- 3D depth sensing cameras (Again, not in other phones and could be a game changer. Or, it could be a gimmick. Wait and see)

- A11 (Will be the best processor yet again on the market)

- Vertical Dual Lens Camera (Must be vertical for one reason or another. Should like most iterations improve photo and video quality. Hoping for 4K 60fps! Goodbye storage lol)

- Larger Battery (Compared to iPhone 7 despite the iPhone 8 rumoured to be same or very similar size)

- Fast Charging/Wireless Charging (Be nice to have the phone charging up a bit quicker. Not bothered about wireless charging as doubtful it'll be truly wireless like across the room)

- Improved other components like Earpiece speaker, maybe RAM increase, etc

End of the day, it is all rumours at this point and we should all reserve judgement until it is officially announced. It could well end up being like the iPad situation years ago. Who knows at this point?

They should probably raise it even higher. If they have the iPhone 7S priced to compete against the Galaxy S8/S8+ and possibly S9/S9+ they might as well take the iPhone 8 much higher.

People will pay anything to get an iPhone. Apple would be smart to get as much as they can. I'd say they would still sell very well at $1200-1400 USD.

This will never happen. It would be the suicide of the iPhone as we know it. If anything the price of the phone should be coming down with technology advancements, and better supply chain pricing. I see the prices staying the same for the 8.

Pricing does not seem to be that bad my 256 GB 7 plus could use a new battery so i welcome this new phone the sooner the better.

It's less than a year old and there's no way the battery should fail that fast. Get it replaced under warranty.

Your 7 plus is no more than 8 months old. If you are having battery problems serious enough to consider purchasing a new phone then you need to take your current phone to the Apple store for an under-warranty repair or replacement. There is no way I would stand for a $969 device to crap out and not get it fixed.
