Why do I get the feeling the words "Apple's 'mainstream luxury' pricing strategy" would have Steve Jobs in a conniption fit. Apple is falling into the same trap that eventually got them into trouble and had to have Steve come back and bail them out. Too many models chasing ridiculously high profit margins while still trying to provide mainstream products. Tim Cook needs to review Apple's history and realize growth comes from simplification and innovation.

I'm on this same boat. Seems like Apple is more likely to get me to upgrade with the iPhone 7S+ since I can care less about OLED and the lack of bezels and rather care more about a processor boost and maybe 4GB of RAM. If they improve the camera and battery life too, I'll be hard pressed not to jump into a new iPhone 7s+. I think my iPhone 7+ is beautiful.
That's what I'm thinking. The LCD screen is more than great. There are people acting like LCD tech is a 1920 black and white tv. I'm about the processor and camera and new iOS 11 functionality (which hasn't been announced)

That makes sense. iPhone SE: $400/500, iPhone 6S: $550/650, iPhone 6S+: $650/750 iPhone 7:$650/750/850 and iPhone 7+: $770/870/970. Now add the iPhone 8/Edition: $850/$950/$1050 (or around those prices). And if everything goes well maybe next year introduce an iPhone 9+ model at $970/1070/1170.

Not really. If the iPhone 8 is a one thousand dollar device, I'm out. MBP goes for sale and I move on from Apple. Prices are crazy. Happy to be an investor (not for long) but as a consumer, these prices are stupid.

Lol, you people are a laugh RIOT!!!!!
Samsung's top-tier edge to edge screen phone starts at $840 (even with awkward fingerprint sensor placement/no scanner under the screen & insecure face unlock).... Apple's top-tier edge to edge screen phone is rumored to start at $850 (but rumored to have a more conveniently located fingerprint scanner, embedded in the screen & have dual front cameras- allowing for a more secure face unlock feature).
Soooooooooo.... over a paltry $10, you're going to sell your MacBook & leave Apple??! Lol, ok. Ummmm... did you get that MacBook for less than $10 more than a Windows PC? You're confusing me here w/ your "random line drawn in the sand" ire!

Remember when the iPad was supposed to be $1,000 ?

Pepperidge Farm remembers...

:D

Haha. Right after the iPad Pro first came out, I got the iPad air 2 as a birthday gift (originally wanted iPad pro but didn't need that huge of a screen when I have a mac). I got the iPad Air 2 128gb, Office 365 3 or 4 years, iPad to hdmi dongle, Apple Care, and a $100 iTunes card all for the same price as the 128gb iPad Pro, haha

THIS!!!
Only thing I think you're wrong about is: I am expecting only two tiers of the Edition- 64gb @ $850 & 256gb @ $1000

edit:
oh, and I think the new features will fold back into the regular phones @ the regular prices in 2018; I think this year you'll pay the premium to have it "first", while next year- same tech on all models
VERY clever way to keep sales up, btw! They learned from the dip between 6 & 6S (the "super cycle").
Obviously, Apple will break all previous sales & profits this year w/ this expensive new high-end phone... while some will opt for saving $200 & buying the 7S instead- which I'm sure will also be a competent phone! Now... how do you follow up to that & make even MORE sales & money the next year?? Simple! Fold those features into the phone that's $200 less & sell a bazillion more!

I am not reading all the posts. But, don't see the issue. I paid 969.00 for a 128gb 6s Plus. A 256gb in that range is a price decrease. I think my 6 Plus was in the 800's. So, i don't see prices "skyrocketing". Is 1,000.00 to much for any phone, Yes. But, we still buy want we WANT, usually irregardless of price.

For me, too much potential new technologies to jump on this right out of the gate. Will wait. My 6s Plus is doing very well.

My next phone is gonna be an iPhone SE. Even if I get the 128GB option I'm still gonna be paying half that of an iPhone 8.

In saying that I'll probably be still on my 6S for the next three years anyway. I was on an iPhone 4 until 2015.

Still on 6 and 6 plus in my house. I've had the 6s now for quite a while (got it when it came out). I do really like the size of my wife's 6, it feels a lot better in hand. If I need a bigger screen to be productive, I use my MBP (which is my main work machine all day long) OR my iPad Pro (9.7) when I want to me highly mobile and still productive to make money (I need a keyboard, etc. for what I do daily). The iPhone? I use it as a last resort camera, phone calls, SMS (although about 60%+ of my SMS going to the Mac anyway since I'm on it all day) and the apps are just convenient ways to access the data I do on my laptop. I don't play games on the phone. Sure, I have FaceBook on it, but really, I prefer it on the Mac or iPad better.

Now that I think of it like this, I really use the iPhone as a phone AND a device that tethers my LTE to the MBP or iPad. That's about it. Guess that's why I've kept the 6plus and skipped the last two. Maybe the current 7 would be a good choice for me when the 8 is released and prices drop....OR whatever they do with an SE later this year.

Maybe I'm in a HUGE minority of users with my phone? It seems like most people use it as their primary computing device, primary method of news/entertainment (no thanks, I want a big screen for that) or as their only camera (I can't even begin to accept that, sorry, it's VERY good, but can't compete with a "real" high end camera....it's just physics with the sensor and lens).

Then, of the MANY options you'll have when Apple brings out 3 new phones, each in at least 2 memory configurations- just don't choose the very most expensive model w/ the very highest memory configuration.
There you go. I did all that really tough thinking for you... your welcome.

Why are you expected to upgrade your phone every year? Because Apple makes new phones every year? Well, they also refresh their laptops and desktops as frequently.

I just treat my smartphone like my laptop: I got an iPhone 4 when it came out, and I still use it however many years later it is now.
I'm starting to get to the same boat. I've always been interested in getting the newest phone every year, but I must be getting older because that allure is wearing off. I didn't upgrade to the 7 (from 6s) and I'm not sure that I will upgrade this year. It just doesn't make financial sense anymore. I just might see how long I can milk this 6s.

These prices sound suspiciously low... $850 for 64GB? Where's the exclusivity with such a price?

The 64GB base model should start at $1089 ($999 at the lowest!). The 256GB model at $1299.

Look at Samsung S8 prices. Apple must have a healthy premium over their pricing, as the new iPhones will be better in just about every way.

To be clear, I don't actually upgrade once a year. Once every two years is what I've been doing since I got my first iPhone. My pattern has been to get the "S" models.

I think upgrading once a year is a bit ridiculous too. But Apple certainly liked to push it in the past; now it seems less likely with prices like these.

Eh, the people that upgrade all the time simply do that. I have a friend that's one of those people that's in line every night. Short of 2K phones, I don't see him changing his tune. Haha.

I don't have a pattern. I generally use a phone until it's problematic or I gift a phone to someone I know and upgrade myself. (I've always grabbed phones second hand though. In most cases I'd rather buy one specifically from someone who upgrades every year.)

I am sure many people will WANT to upgrade again this year and likely will. However I do think Apples prices rising above $1000 will have some effect. Many of us are now asking, for this price do I really NEED a new phone right now? In our household the answer is NO. It makes no financial sense to keep throwing more money at Apple or any cell phone brand on a yearly basis. We currently have a 6s and a 6 and both of those fill our needs adequately. When we need a new phone we will likely just purchase a pair of SE's. No phone is worth $1000 to me.

Apple's widely rumored high-end iPhone with an OLED display is expected to cost upwards of $1,000, but UBS analyst Steven Milunovich believes that a base 64GB model could start at $850 to $900 in the United States. That price point would be similar to Samsung's new Galaxy S8+, which starts at $840 to $850.

Milunovich said the flagship iPhone could start at under $1,000 as part of Apple's "mainstream luxury" pricing strategy. He also believes the 5.8-inch device will be competing at a screen size disadvantage compared to the 6.2-inch Galaxy S8+, leading him to predict Apple will adopt similar pricing as Samsung.

Milunovich thinks that a 256GB model could cost between $950 and $1,000, so the iPhone could very well be the first mainstream smartphone in the United States to have a four-digit price tag. He also predicted that the tentatively named iPhone 7s and iPhone 7s Plus will start at around $649 and $749 respectively.

An excerpt from Milunovich's latest research note obtained by MacRumors:The research note cites UBS Asia hardware analyst Arthur Hsieh, who estimates the factory cost of the tentatively named iPhone 8 could be $70 to $90 higher than the iPhone 7 Plus, which starts at $769. Milunovich's prices appear to be merely predictions based on this information, rather than inside sources.

In addition to an edge-to-edge OLED display with narrow bezels, the iPhone 8 is expected to resemble the Galaxy S8 in many ways, including wireless charging, no physical Home button, and potentially 3D facial recognition and/or iris scanning. Touch ID might be embedded in or under the True Tone display.

Milunovich maintains a "buy" rating for AAPL with a $151 price target. AAPL closed at an all-time high of $144.77 on Tuesday.

I'd happily pay if I can just get a freakin dark mode/theme!!! I just bought some more Apple stock today. Any company that can sell the same phone 4 years in a row and sell it in record numbers deserves my money. I really don't know how they do it.

In other news, the Apple Watch 3 will ave a new virtual Tourbillon watch face.

I wish we even got that much out of an Apple watch release.
[doublepost=1491430924][/doublepost]Price doesn't bother me much because I always change phones when the newest one comes out and sell the old one. Seems like the hit is always about the same after a year on Apple phones, maybe $200-300 if you count the sales tax, so for me it's not really more expensive. I don't mind my self leasing plan, especially if there are any promotions like BOGO, or free stuff.

Doesn't seem like much of a change from the 7+. I paid $1050 including tax for my 7+ so paying that much for an 8 is ok. After the 8, I'm likely going to use it for two years.

You're right. The smartphone is a mature device. The real innovation will come in the form of software. Will Apple deliver with iOS11? We don't know yet.
