I have a theory on the designs we are seeing. The iPhone 8 in iPhone 7 plus size (5.5 inch screen) will become the new normal iPhone. The 4.7 inch model will become iPhone 8 mini. Both will have the rear fingerprint allowing for bigger screens on the front. The "iPhone 8: Edition" will be the new iPhone Plus model, may even get renamed to iPhone Pro. This will include the fingerprint sensor in the screen, AR, wireless charging and all the other features we are seeing from the other design going around. So I think both designs going around will be used.

<insert shut up and take my money jpg>

I feel like just before getting my first iPhone.

I feel like I'm putting my whole life on hold waiting for this thing to come out! Haven't been so eager to see a new iPhone be unveiled since the Jobs days... it's giving me that familiar feeling. I just have this feeling it will be special and worth the wait.

I know this is very trivial and nitpicky, but a product can't be "launched" and then "sales beginning" a month later, at least not in this context. The two are used synonymously, per the definition of a product launch. The correct way to phrase this is that the 8 will be revealed in September, and launched in October.

iOS is just such a more refined OS than Android. I like the freedom and options of android but the OS is no where close to iOS quality.
This is pure unadulterated false.
Android quality on Google Pixel devices is on the same level as iOS if you ignore hardware defects in Pixel.

In fact, I can download huge files/torrents on my Pixel and transfer them to my PC when needed, saves a lot of power bills. No need to keep my Monster PC running 24x7. I cannot do that on an iPhone how much ever I want.

they can do whatever they want with the 8, if my dying iPhone 6 can make it to september/october I'll be looking at the '7S' model or a google pixel 2. all I want at this point is a device that won't be limping across the line when it reaches the two year mark.

iPhone 8... yes...
But what's more interesting is seeing what they do with iOS 11... that's going to truly make the phone.

iOS 11, will just be a repeat of all the pervious releases of iOS. Same story, different gimmick this year. I love how they are pushing the Portrait Mode right now, Horrible in low light, doesn't work all that well. I say, do expect much except a new gimmick this year. Hope I am wrong, but Apple has not disappointed me in the past, why would they start now.

So, the consensus of the analysts, speculators and bedroom photoshoppers is that the iPhone 8 design is going to be a blatant knockoff of the Samsung Galaxy S8 - even down to the rear-mounted fingerprint sensor which seems to be about the only criticism of the S8 in reviews...?

I sincerely hope and expect that Apple are "thinking different".

If not, guys, please copy the S8's headphone socket and MicroSD slot while you're at it... (flap, oink!)

Well it wasn't the fact that it's on the back that everyone has the issue with, it's the placement on the back. Right next to the camera is worse than it going on the back. I've used the fingerprint sensor on the nexus 6p and pixel, and it actually wasn't all that bad, it wasn't as good as being on the front, but it was definitely not a deal breaker like everyone is making it seem.

I hope Apple doesn't drag it's feet on AR/VR features for another year.

Flagship phones by the top companies are pretty boring at the moment.

Why buy S8 in the first place? Everyone knew OLED iPhone was coming....

Quite frankly, its because I can afford to.

Also I wanted to experience the Samsung bezel-less screen for myself and I believe in supporting companies that try push tech forward. So i was happy to give them my money. I'll wait for Apple to get to gear then I switch back. The iPhone 7 was the worst upgrade I've ever made.

Let's hope apple put touch id sensor under the display,

Touch id on the back is a bad idea, i will pass :(
seems like it would be good or better in certain situations.. not sure about all situations (well, especially the situations when you're not actually holding the phone in which case, you'd probably end up just using the passcode).. but touchID on the bottom isn't always great either as it requires some thumb gymnastics whereas a touch with the index finger on the back would be more natural/comfortable.

idk, personally, i'm not really of the camp that's thinking "omg it's too weird on the back.. can't use!".. if it's on the back, i'll probably want to try before i buy but i think i'd do so with an open mind.

My guess is they'll start preorders at the same time.
A few people will go for the 7s when they'll see shipping estimates for the 8, then a few months later they'll sell their 7s to buy a brand new model with OLED. That would be a huge win for Apple.
But I'm not really sure they'll release the 7s and 7s+.

I'll most likely be buying two of the 7s. Why? Proven form factor (last gens of apple devices are always the best) and cost. If internals are the same, I could care less of OLED and new design. I actually do care, but it's certainly not worth the extra rumored $300 which is nearly 50% more.

Exactly and from what I've tried on other android devices, it's actually not that bad, just different. 99% of the people saying they are going to pass will be up at midnight trying to preorder like always lol

Touch ID on the front is just flat out better. I don't think Apple will ever put it on the back and getting it under the display is gonna be a major feature as no other company has that feature yet.

Its far more natural for your thumb to use Touch ID on the front screen. Pick up your phone right now and notice how your thumb is floating above the screen as its also the finger you use to navigate the touch screen. The index finger on the back of the phone needs to then search around for the sensor as its moving blindly. Thats not natural at all.

I have a 6s and I agree on the S models being the best. But the bezel free design is very enticing, I don't really care about OLED but I'd buy iPhone 8 for the form factor alone. I may end up buying the 7s, but I like the dual camera so I might switch to the plus model this year, unless they put dual camera on the 4.7'' as well (very unlikely).

well, i just did your test without trying to think about finger positions and the results were this:
my thumb was on the power button.. my index finger was on the back of the phone.
just sayin..
