What problems are you having with your 6?

Most urgently I've recently gotten the replace battery warning and the phone lasts about 4h off the charger with light use.

More broadly the device has struggled to perform basic tasks without pretty frequent problems for most of its lifecycle. I don't want to be argumentative because everyone's got their own opinion and experience, but for me this has probably been the most disappointing apple product I've owned. And it followed on the heels of my favourite apple device, the 4S.

Apple is under pressure to deliver a new iPhone that catches up with Samsung S8 but is five months sufficient to redesign it when development usually starts a few years in advance?
What do you mean 5 months? I think it has been in development for quite a bit longer.
Do you think apple had to make a redesign because of the s8?
I really don' t think so. Apple has started 3d touch, enhanced haptic feedback 2 years ago and last year they got rid of a physical homebutton and developed a touchbar for the macbook pro. It all pointed in the durection of apple removind the homebutton and embedding it in the screen. There have been rumors for more than a year back about apple having trouble integrating touchid in the screen. So it has been a lot longer than 5 months.

Your precious iphone does not have any of these features and technological advancements at least natively and I still dont see how these phones look the same with the screen off, you are blinded by your own notions.................

Infinity Display
Samsung calls it an “Infinity Display.” We call it flat-out gorgeous. Apple has been a bit behind the times for several smartphone generations now when it comes to its flagship phones’ screen-to-body ratio, mainly because it has used the same iPhone design for three consecutive years. The gap between Apple and its rivals has never been wider than it is now, of course, thanks to the new LG G6 and Samsung’s Galaxy S8 and S8+.

The new Galaxy S phones feature faces that are each 83% screen. The side bezels are barely there, as was the case last year, but the real story is the significantly thinned bezels above and below the display. This new design dramatically enhances the user experience, and it looks great as well. Of course, it also doesn’t hurt that Samsung’s new Quad HD+ Super AMOLED displays are the most stunning smartphone screens yet.

Curved edges
Samsung’s first smartphone with a curved edge was a total gimmick. In 2017, however, that’s no longer the case. The symmetrical curved front and back glass on the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ make the phones feel so much thinner than they actually are. They’re so comfortable in the hand, and reach is improved as well, thanks to the curves.

Meanwhile, my go-to smartphone, the iPhone 7 Plus, isn’t comfortable at all to use with one hand. Also of note, it has a display that is smaller than the screens on both new Galaxy S models, and yet the phone itself is about the same size as the Galaxy S8+.

Desktop Experience
With the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+, consumers inch closer to a future without any need for traditional computers.

Samsung’s new DeX Station accessory allows users to dock their Galaxy S8 or S8+ and connect it to a monitor, keyboard and mouse. The desktop-optimized Android experience is lightning fast — it actually looks and feel a lot like Chrome OS, for obvious reasons. While any app is accessible in desktop mode, Samsung’s own apps have been optimized for the Desktop Experience. Some third-party apps have as well, most notably Microsoft’s mobile Office suite.

Iris scanner
Apple changed the game when it introduced the first iPhone with a Touch ID fingerprint scanner, and now every flagship phone out there has a scanner for quick unlocking and payment authentication. Of course variety is the spice of life, and you can never have too many options when it comes to mobile security.

Samsung’s Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ include the iris scanner from last year’s ill-fated Galaxy Note 7, and it can be used to unlock the phone or to gain access to the handset’s Secure Folder.

Face recognition
Speaking of new security options, the S8 and S8+ also include full facial recognition enabled by the upgraded 8-megapixel front-facing camera. For the time being, face recognition can only be used to unlock the phones.

Bixby AND Google Assistant
Sticking with the theme of “choice,” Samsung is also giving users their choice of virtual personal assistants. Google’s popular Google Assistant is included on the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+, as is Samsung’s own new personal assistant Bixby. iPhone users have access to third-party voice assistants as well, but they’re severely crippled since Apple doesn’t allow developers to access key components of iOS.

Bixby Vision
An extension of Samsung’s new Bixby solution, Bixby Vision uses object recognition, text recognition and location data to add another layer of functionality to its personal assistant. Using the phone’s camera, Bixby can “see” objects or points of interest and offer information pertaining to them. Bixby Vision can also translate text in real time in more than 50 languages.

Third-party developers will have access to Bixby Vision as well, so the possibilities are endless.

New 10nm processor
Apple is THE leader when it comes to smartphone chipsets, but Samsung beat Apple to the punch with the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+. Both the Snapdragon 835 and the Exynos 8895 are 10nm chips, offering dramatic improvements in both performance and efficiency. Apple is working on a new 10nm SoC as well, but it won’t be found in any iPhones until this coming September.

Wireless charging
Wireless charging is another feature Apple is working on for its next-generation iPhones, but Samsung phones have supported wireless charging for years. The Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ ship with wireless charging support as well, of course, including Qi and Samsung’s own fast wireless charging tech.

Fast charging
Did someone say fast charging? The large 3,000 mAh and 3,500 mAh batteries in Samsung’s new phones fill up in no time thanks to support for the latest available fast-charging technologies.

Boom don't forget the Gear VR .................and all of those software enhancements in Touchwiz and a real file manager...so much more

"but Samsung beat Apple to the punch with the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+"

And that's all Samsung cares about, "beating Apple to the punch". That's all I needed to see in your long ass analysis.

They just see what Apple has planned and want to rush out first. I've always seen through them with this.

"Wireless charging is another feature Apple is working on for its next-generation iPhones, but Samsung phones have supported wireless charging for years."

That's isn't real wiresless charging, that's a changing mat that you sill have to plug in and rest your phone on which is utterly pointless and isn't "wireless" at all. Apple have been waiting for a real implemetation for the "wireless" part. Now, of Apple decides to go the Samsung route then I won't bother with that ebecuase it is pointless to me.

Also, what the heck are you doing on Macrumors? You come across as someone who doesn't like Apple and yet you're taking your time to belittle iPhone users by justifying your S8 purchase. I would never think about going on an Android forum and saying how superior iPhone is. Are you feeling intimidated by all these iPhone 8 rumours and the fact that come September your S8 won't be special anymore or something? Your whole post reeks of insecurity.

I really think that there won' t be a 7s this year. It will all be iphone 8.
Iphone 8, iphone 8 plus with lcd panels(new aspect ratio?) with alu frame and glass back, wireless charging and if also new aspect ratio: touchid on the back(otherwise on the front)smaller bezels. Updated camera' s, socs, etc.
These will be released this september/october without delays, etc.

Iphone 8 anniversery edition/x?
Oled, touchid embedded in the screen , almost no bezel, stainless steel(silver and spaceblack) sapphire substrate back, updated socs and cams, (more advanced, than the regular iphone 8), etc.
And this one will be delayed and quite constrained at launch because of low yields.

So all these leaks about the iphone 8 and the special (oled) edition have been mixed up, and added to confusion about touchid on the back, design leaks, delays, etc.

Regular iphone 8(a few examples, how it could look), first 3 pictures.

Iphone 8 edition(last 6 pictures)

Thank you. Finally someone talking some sense. Makes me laugh seeing all these "Apple better catch up or they're doomed!" posts, as if Apple haven't already planned the design of this phone. Jony Ive has wanted an all-screen iPhone for YEARS. The sad thing is now that the S8 has come out with their "beat Apple to the punch" shtick everyone's going to think Apple copied. It really infuriates me.

Yes, for samsung it is all about image.
They need and want to be first, the biggest drawback for apple is that they still need to much parts from samsung, so if apple places an order or make inquiries about parts, i suspect that they have an entire departement to do backwards engineering to see what apple' s plans are.
This year, it is obvious they are trying to copy apple' s design philosophy of symmetry.
They could have released an s8 with no lower chin at all, and just a forehead with the cams, sensors, etc. They didn' t, and that is a shame for them really, would have looked even better. But perhaps they couldn' t do it because of space restraints, because of the headphone jack on the bottom :) :) .
And that is the difference with apple, they have been planning this for years and we' ll see the results in a few months.

Apples the only manufacturer with 3d touch, SIRI and Maps work in multiple countries.

I think you'll find that Google's maps and voice assistant work in "multiple countries" and are available on all Android phones. Indeed, Apple used to rely on Google Maps and definitely spent a few years playing catch-up when they decided to dump Google.

I'd agree with you that Samsung's insistence on re-inventing all of Google's wheels and installing both on the phone is annoying - although in the past they've probably inspired Google to make Android a bit less spartan.

OTOH, iOS is far from perfect: the latest versions of Music are a hot mess that have been gimped to promote Apple's streaming service - and the only "alternatives" are little more than skins and bolt-ons to the underlying Apple software. I hate the all-or-nothing way that iCloud works and the patchy support for Dropbox/Google Drive if you don't have the luxury of living in an all-Apple world.

does anyone else tilt their head when looking at the mockups? o_O

I use Gmaps and OK Google on my 7+. Only thing Siri does is tell me the weather.

I hate when people buy a Samsung/HTC/Motorola/LG phone and use that to compare Android to IOS. If you've never had a Nexus or Pixel then what you are comparing is a modified version of Android to an original version of IOS. Having both latest versions in my household I will say both are pretty similar.

Apple is great at simplifying things but it has it's WTF moments as well as Android. If a person has invested into the ecosystem then yes everything just works. But, if you have multiple brands in your household, Nexus/Pixel makes everything so easy.

I applaud Apple for trying to push bluetooth forward, while it works for the most part, it's still unreliable in certain circumstances.
