I've been avoiding these iPhone 8 design threads but a shift back to the 5s style body would be fine by me. A sturdy grip, better reception (? or am I misremembering that), I do not use Touch ID yet so I am not sure if the back would hinder my usage. I have no plans for AR or VR or whatever.

Wait and see although I love my 7+ save for some cellular stupidity.

Jony: Lets put Touch ID on the back.

Me:

...think like Jony, "We wanted a completely clear front space with no distractions..." etc etc God help us

All the cases will need another hole in the back. Joy. I'd prefer keeping slim top and bottom bezels with a small Touch ID sensor/home button (and bezel-less sides) than Touch ID on the back.

iPhone is the culture, iMessage is the culture, I'm sure we can get used to the fingerprint in the back how bad can it be like we don't have a headphone jack

Na that s8 display gorgeous

If the fingerprint sensor has to be located on the back of the new iPhone, why not implement it in the Apple logo?
It would be a solution in terms of ergonomy, reachability..
Try to rest your finger on the logo!

I think this looks like a fine copy of the Samsung, the reason I purchased a Apple iPhone is that it's Apple design not a copy of another's device. Apple keep up with this and you will lose me as a customer. Saving 4000. A year with service might be a better choice then owning a copy of what just another phone model that looks the same as another's

These are renders from schematics. It's likely by now that there have been more than a handful of different design schematics as design and technology are matched together. It's also likely that this is something like what a new iPhone might look like or not.

Any render is conjecture - an educated guess at best. It's not a 'Leak' - if anything it's wishful thinking from the instagrammer who published it.

Besides; who's going to want to put a case over that touch ID sensor on the back? If it were even true, that hole is more likely for conductive charging. Think about it.
If Apple's idea of wireless charging is via a hole on the back of the phone then God help us all. :D

I was almost certainly not buying this phone anyway, but if TouchID is on the back and it still has no headphone jack socket and they get rid of a way to hold the thing properly without obscuring the display, then it all makes it such an easy pass for me it's not even funny... I hope these rumours are Apple playing games, lowering expectations.

ok I could live with that, but do not like the butthole. I like front hole only. Jimmy likes butthole and of course the apple guy.

Touch ID sensor on the back doesn't work for me. There are so many use cases where the front sensor is a huge convenience factor, where a rear sensor simply wouldn't allow me to unlock my phone with my fingerprint. Mounted in the car, mounted on my bike. Not to mention that 75% of the time I use my phone it's sitting on my desk. I would not buy this phone for that reason. For sure.

I kinda like it! I don't think having Touch ID on the back will really change the way I use the phone.

That said, it would be soooooo much better if Touch ID were incorporated into either the power or volume button(s).

Terrible choice. Say goodbye to smoothly unlocking your iPhone:

1) when it's laying down
2) when it's mounted inside your car
3) when it's wirelessly charging (so glad Apple waited to launch "without compromises", except unlocking while charging)

Looks like Apple got caught with its pants down on thin bezels.

"Wait, everyone else is doing thin bezels? We need to update our 9-year-old front face design right now!"

"What about TouchID?"

"Just throw it somewhere on the back; hurry up, everyone's launching before us! Raise the price to $1000; that'll make the inferior experience feel more premium."

Wild as this might seem, here is my prediction and I can not reveal my source.

The entire surface will be finger print sensitive, meaning you can unlock with more than one digit no matter the location on the device you place them (maybe excepting the rim/chassis). If the back is also glass you might have two surfaces to detect your single or double hand grip to open the iPhone8. This tech will appear then on iPad later. Maybe the iPPro's only.

Thes design does not resemble what I've seen that informs my comments.

I believe it will be for a 3d-"depth" sensor. This can be used for VR/AR applications - a topic, that we know, Apple has been working on in the past years. Here is something from Google, that could be pretty similar:

Adding this sensor will make VR ubiquitous - and give us a good reason to buy new phones.
But why should this sensor be put in the middle of the back and not near the camera(s) then?

Ask your source if something they refer to as "magic" is part of the operative structure, let me know the answer, and then I'll know where your info comes from. :D

That hole needs to be filled.

Hmm, so we complain about the bezels but apple has kept those because of Touch ID. Now they are reducing the bezel sizes but Touch ID may end up in the back.

We will never be satisfied. Lol.

Anyhow, since seeing this schematic, I've been imagining having Touch ID on the back and unlocking the phone using my index finger. It's awkward at first, but with the help of haptic feedback, it probably will be a smooth transition. For the sake of design, i do think Apple would be better off using the apple logo as the Touch ID reader.

But let's hope that Apple has something better in store than what we are seeing these days.
TouchID should be built into the display.

Try laying the phone on a table and unlocking it with your finger print?

Obviously you CAN do it but who's gonna WANT to do it?
Maybe I got confused as to what you were meaning either in your original post or this one, I'm not sure what you mean, sorry.

wouldn't the depth sensor come from dual camera lenses? Albeit they might be too close together for that.
