Yup.

Because everyone's hands are exactly the same size and end up in exactly the same place when they hold the phone.

Well okay valid point. So it seems the solution is putting the sensor at random locations on every phone so the user can pick which one they like best?

Please no more slippery aluminum!
Also, the camera is not aligned to the corner radius and is making me uncomfortable.

So rarely comment anymore, but I logged in just to talk about this. Awful camera placement, not straight. Just horribly done and distracting.

No, it doesn't. But if this rumor proves accurate, there would be an adjustment period like other iPhone changes over the year . But over time, feedback will surface how some actually like the placement on the back or it wasn't as bad as they thought it would be. I think experience first hand with this may change some iPhone users thoughts. Perhaps it may not be a horrible implementation depending on the person. I'm interested in trying it if it happens.

Agreed people need to wait and give it a try if this is what Apple comes up with. Some suggested reading for some of our forum members would be "Green eggs and ham".

It won't be temporary when you buy one.

This is indeed true for those of us who plan to keep our phones forever.

Honestly, I don't see Apple going this route.

That said, I did see Apple improving Siri, and that didn't happen, so...

"Contorting" lmao why do you guys have to be so dramatic?
because not everyone has hands the size of trump's! I have large enough hands that I can palm my wife's 9.7" iPad Pro. my fingers don't rest on the back of the 6s plus phone I have now cause my fingers grip all the way around. Some of us WILL have to contort our grip in order to unlock a device. A coworker has an android based phone with sensor on the back (cant remember the model), and when I hold it in one hand my fingers aren't on the back of the device

Not this time. Touch ID on the back is a no go for me. I need to be able to unlock my phone while it's sitting on my desk. I can overlook its ugliness, but that's a functional downgrade.

You will be able to though, iris scanning

That's fine then. But if that's the case they need to drop Touch ID. It's simply not functional on the back of the device. People won't use it.

People will use it though, as when you are using your phone after picking it up your finger is near the middle anyway

I can't believe the attention this stupid "leak" is getting. Two major reasons it is 100% phony:

1. This is NOT an "all-glass" design, which has been consistently rumored as a key design feature.

2. Apple isn't going to re-use the iPhone 5 design for this much-anticipated release.

Hell since the iPhone is gonna be more expensive might as well just buy a s8. There basically the same damn phone. If I'm gonna pay more give me more. As in Touch ID under the display.

I can't wait for everyone to be disappointed when they find out it IS a fingerprint sensor. It literally cannot be anything else. There is no question. The details are up in the air, but the camera will be vertical, and Touch ID will be on the back. Samsung iPhone 8: We can't do anything cool anymore because we're just using off-the-shelf parts from companies who are actually doing new things. Samsung couldn't figure out how to embed a fingerprint scanner into the front of their phone, Apple gets their parts from Samsung, therefore, Apple won't be figuring it out either. Oh I love the new Android-influenced iPhones, with their power button on the side so I hit the volume rocker every time, camera humps, and rear fingerprint scanners.

Apple is really making their phone stand out...with it's.......bad voice assistant and crippled eco-system. Half-baked integration. Siri can call up other apps now! --- Just not Spotify because there's Apple Music you know! Oh and you can use our Share Sheets to integrate with other apps, but probably not the one you want! True security and innovation! Let's take things from Android years later, but not really. So courageous!

...If the hole in the back and being it is where it is, for a fingerprint sensor, then it's just plain stupid. You'd have to complete the process two-handed or dislocate your thumb.
...
No, you don't have to do it. You can do it easily one handed. Only real problem occurs when your phone is laying flat on a surface. But deciding between finally having an almost edge to edge display and a fingerprint sensor on the front I always want the edge to edge display.
Also Apple isn't stupid. Of course they don't want to put the fingerprint on the back. But if they can't get it to work under the display in Apple quality there is no way around it.

Unfortunately, Touch ID will be on the back. Knowing Apple's MO lately, we'll have to wait another year for a true Touch ID in the front screen.

At least it won't be a 6sss design.
this is the biggest mistake to think. You think apple will admit they made a mistake and add it to the front after a year? They wont do that because it will make them look stopid. They will praise the touch ID on the rear like the best idea ever.

And TBH: it can be a good idea if they allow a whole finger to be scanned.

Touch ID on back..?

What about when I've docked my phone in car holder or laying it on my desk and want to unlock?

What about wallet cases; or Apple's own battery case (obviously I mean a next gen one)?

Design fail. Sure hope this doesn't prove to be true.

Touch ID can still serve as a back up if Iris scanning became the primary. It May not be as purposeful on the back as it still would be functional. It just would not be as convenient for many. But I don't see Apple dropping touch ID all together at least within the next iPhone or two. Not until Iris scanning becomes the primary.

So you're discrediting one rumor with a next rumor? Ahm...

The notion that "Apple is having trouble with Touch ID" is hilarious. Truly.

Do you think the only size Touch ID sensor that Apple can make, just happens to be the exact same size and shape of the Home Button?

If they were to put it on the back, which they won't, they wouldn't keep it so close to that original size.

If they even make an all-aluminum phone, it will need some egress for the charging we've heard about.

iF the tech was avaialble, the Samsung S8 would not have the finger scanner on the back. You think that Samsung put the finger scanner on the back so everyone could complain about it ......

You mean that inductive charging hole?

Lol keep telling yourself that. Casuse the others opinions are wrong and your are right with your guess.

Might as well call it the inductive charging ID. We are all guessing here.

And like the power button moving, Apple is now copying android designs, so yes that is a touchid on the back. Welcome to the era of bloody finger scanners in the back due to it being all about the "screen" on the front. What you need is someone like jobs like now to lead and not follow.....
