Why would it be a design fail? Android phones work just fine without a tactile home button.

exactly my point. i hate android phones that have a virtual home button. there are times where I miss tap the home button

The current home button is tactile AND it's just vibrations, and many (including myself) seem to like it. Why not both?
i like the current home button. who said i didn't like it?
[doublepost=1487280540][/doublepost]
Exactly! Just like how the iOS keyboard was a fail, as compared to the physical Blackberry keyboard!
have you tried an android with a virtual home button? it sucks.
[doublepost=1487280574][/doublepost]
Why?
[doublepost=1487248867][/doublepost]Let's hope iOS 11 finally moves all controls to the bottom of the screen. I'll never understand why so many apps -- native and third-party -- have essential function controls at the very top of the screen.
have you tried an android phone with an onscreen home button? it's terrible.
[doublepost=1487280619][/doublepost]
I love the static button on my iPhone. I don't understand why people hate it so much. After awhile I forget that it's static button because it just sounds/feels like the old button.
i think you misunderstood me. the current static button on the iphone is tactile. there's a texture around the button that you can feel.

a virtual onscreen home button (like many android phones) isn't tactile. that's what i don't like.

I've owned two nexus devices and the onscreen buttons are just fine. It also allows more space for screen and smaller bezels. Haters gonna hate got hates sake.

iPhone 7 isn't and it's doing just fine.
i never said the iphone 7 home button isn't tactile. there's a groove around the button that you can feel.

they're not fine. i have a nexus phone. i missed the home button by accident so i had to look down on the phone and tap it. it sucks.
[doublepost=1487280795][/doublepost]
No home button. Biometrics under the glass. Synaptics has won the job. Gonna be awesome.
how do you go home? there's going to be a home function. whether it's an on screen button or something on the side of the phone.
[doublepost=1487280838][/doublepost]
It will probably be powered by vibrations, similar to 3D Touch on the current generation of iPhones and the Force Touch trackpads. If it's physical, there's a higher chance of mechanical failure and possibility of water ingress.
if it's completely flat then it sucks. i need to feel the button so i won't miss tap it.
[doublepost=1487280912][/doublepost]
What if the fingerprint sensor area is much larger so just being near the center of the active area is enough to unlock it? Or to "click" it?
huh?
my understanding is that the entire screen will be a fingerprint sensor.

i just want a home button i can feel so that if i need to go back to the home screen, i can hit it 100% of the time. unlike nexus phones where sometimes i have to look down to make sure i don't miss the home button.
[doublepost=1487280947][/doublepost]
The iPhone 7 not haveing a tactile (I assume you mean a physically moving button) home button would indicate against that.
no. not physically moving.

i mean that it has to be textured. iphone 7 has a groove around the home button so i can always be 100% sure i'm tapping on it.
[doublepost=1487281014][/doublepost]
I'm guessing it will be similar to the iPhone 7's tactile response.

i meant the groove around the iphone 7. my understanding is that if this iphone 8 is an onscreen button, it's going to be completely flat (unless there's a flexible display that creates a texture around the virtual button)

The problem is that as you remove more physical buttons and remove more bezel you make the device harder to use. I'm not physically disabled so it won't impact me but I have disabled friends and relatives and I can see how this would impact them. Not all disabilities are the same.
I understnd they aren't all the same. I guess my point is, people are using Androids phones with disabilities too. IDK that we can pigeon hole removing a single button (that's what we are talking about, right?) as making this less disabled user friendly. Hell, we haven't seen the UI yet. For every specific disability that this is a negative to, it may benefit those with others disabilities. As you say, they aren't all the same.

So?

By your logic, Touch ID would have sucked on the iPhone because it was a horrible experience on the few android phones which sported it. By your logic, a touchscreen would have been a horrible experience on the first iPhone because no smartphone had implemented it right before.

I believe Apple will do what it does best: taken an emerging product category with a frustrating user experience and deliver a polished product made possible by its control over both the hardware and software.

First, I just love how the "leaks" occur right before Samsung is ready to unveil the S8. Happens all the time. I believe the leak is spot on and this is the phone we will be getting. Apple has ordered extra OLED panels because their market research has shown that this model will sell like hotcakes. It won't be marketed as a $1,000 + phone, but as a $39.95 a month upgrade. I'm all in for this model.

I like the iPhone 8 5.8" since will have HD+ screen and use most or all for display! I buy the one with maximum storage inside so it going cost for me $1,200-$1,300.

I guess the idea of adding a toolbar is good, but the main problem seems to be touchid to function through the oled panel will be a problem. There are 4 options:

1. Apple gets touchid to work through the oled panel glass and it will even be able to display content.
2. Touchid will work, but there is a dead area that won' t be able to display information(just around the edges of the (virtual) button.
3. Apple will move the touchid to another place on the phone(back or sides) and seperates it from the virtual homebutton.
4. Apple will replace touchid completely with face recognition.

I hope it will be option 1 or 2.

I have seen a lot of concepts, and while they are very pretty, they do not seem realistic. Apple will still need an upper bezel/chin for speaker and facetime, and for symmetry, there will be a chin on the lower part, too.

I wonder if it is possible on the top and the bottom of an oled screen to have " dead " parts in the screen anyhow.
If it is, apple would be able to make holes in the top of the display for camera' s , speaker and sensors, and have the battery , wifi and provider indicators displayed next to the speaker , front camera on top and on the bottom in the function area, have function keys displayed next to the touchid/homebutton.

Go back to password entry! 4 digits! That what I use now!

If the new ultra iPhone is going to be in 4.7"-sized casing, presumably it will also sport the dual lens camera (after all it is the ultimate iPhone costing >$1000). I can only then assume that the regular iPhone will also get the dual lens camera this year and it will no longer be resigned to the larger model.

I would not bet on it.
The iphone x is a complete redesign with a new internal design and special techniques for saving space and energy(oled, new battery layout, motherboard, etc) . The 4.7 inch iphone 7s will have the same layout as the 7 with a new soc, etc.

For those worried about not having a tactile home button: Not a problem. There are android phones like the Pixel that don't have the button and are fine. Apple has figured out a long time ago how to integrate the touch id into the screen or else the rumors wouldn't be this far advanced. Think about this phone: OLED screen, super efficient processor with a big battery, dual OIS cameras, stereo speakers and great resolution, and maybe wireless charging, in a form size about the same or less than the current 4.7 inch. Get in line now!!

Now we know why apple isn' t going to make a new ipad mini.
In 1 year, apple watch will have lte. Together with airpods it it could act as a phone.
So, when buying a watch, airpods and a new high end ipad mini, you would have everything. Great phone, tablet, etc. That is portable.
It would definately canabalize iphone sales.
And next year apple will probably launch a bigger version of the iphone 8/x of this year, making it about 6.5 inch that fits in the current 7 plus footprint. So that would be a very expensive alternative for a ipad mini.

Name a feature that Andoid has knocked out of the park, that Apple has later gotten wrong.

maps.

uh what?

if you read my original post, my logic is that Apple will not make the home button completely flat like android.

But the screen size is too small.

But more want a bigger screen not a small screen

Making only 5.1 available would annoy a lot of their market

Having a choice between 3 models confuses you? You must hate car shopping.
Yes. They are very confusing.
Before purchasing, need to consider the size factor. Then choose among the 5 Colours.
It especially confusing when the two models, i7 and i7 plus share different features. The i7 have dual camera with potrait mode.
I can't imagine if there is a third option pop up.

It could also be like this:

A 4.7 inch 7s with the same design and an upgraded soc, cameras and an upgrade to a 1920x1080 lcd screen instead of 1335x750.

An iphone 8/x with the 5.8 oled, etc.

An iphone 7s+ with upgraded socs, cameras and an upgraded LCD to 2208x1232 res(real internal res of the 6/s/7 plus). So you' ll can stil get a great hi-end 5.5 inch new iphone 7s without the new design or oled.

Only 10 OLED screen models will be available at launch, zero in stores all on back order. typical Apple style you'll receive your OLED phone on or before Nov 15 if played by Sept
hopefully starting production early avoids this issue.
