Google pixel xl is $700ish, one plus 3t is $440, Nokia 6 is cheap not 100% on the price yet. My iPhone was $1190 after Apple care and taxes.

Also iPhones are made in China and cost about $300 to make, I understand they are out to make a profit but that's a big profit for what?!
Umm maybe the profit is to continue to grow the business. Invest in other endeavors, upgrading the company. Typically n retail they get a 300% markup on items compared to cost to make. This 'profit' pays salaries, benefits, R&D, etc. Apple is also investing a lot in the healthcare field as well, which is a costly endeavor.

Surely this can't be true. Apple would never willingly switch to an open standard that's used by the competition when you can just use a proprietary format and force people to waste money on adapters.

Seriously though, switching to USB-C would be a great move. I hope they do it. Industry standards exist for a reason. It's about damn time Apple gets on the bandwagon.

Good. USB-C is superior to Lightning. Oh no, I have to replace 4 lightning cables with USB-C, what ever will I do?? I'll spend like $25 and be done with it.
You can't see one inch further than your nose, apparently.
You can't replace your lightning cables with USB-C, because then you cannot charge your lightning devices.

The control area at the bottom of the device could be similar to how the Touch Bar is used for Macbook Pro (e.g. Touch ID, other app-specific controls)
Which would be totally daft. You don't need a Touch Bar below a Touch screen. That would be an almost criminal waste of 0.6 inch of perfectly fine touch screen space.

if they switch to USB-c the apple really are lost, time to make up their mind. First iphone without headphone jack now change to this, it would be more than just frustrating, especially for those of us that has spent a lot of money on Lighting cables and pheripherals. So now all of that as well need dongles? geez.

What would these changes be?

I tell you a change I would like to see (Actually two changes). One I submitted to apple many years ago, the other I just submitted recently.

1. Allow developers to select certain colors for the notification dots on apps. For example a weather app could use a RED dot for warnings, a YELLOW dot for watches, or maybe a BLUE dot for informative statements, public alerts etc. You could also have the same thing for todo apps. For example red overdue, yellow, near due, green everything is current. Same thing for calendar, etc.

2. Photo/Camera app. I think the camera app should have some implementation of a toggle to define whether the image you are going to take will be for WORK or PERSONAL use. So many people these days have a work and personal phone that is the same phone. I get so tired of pictures I take for work going into my personal camera roll. I think if the toggle was added to the camera (And it would keep the last setting used) then it could put the images as they are taken in the appropriate section of the photos app. The way I would prefer it to be implemented would be when the Photos app is first launched you see a WORK folder and a PERSONAL folder. Inside each of those folders they have their own camera roll, their own default albums like people, places, etc. Then you could easily find pictures you need from work and use those filters to find what your looking for, and you could still do the same for home. And since the camera app keeps whatever setting you select until you change it people that only have a personal phone and do nothing from work it would stay set to PERSONAL by default. I think this would be a good way to keep your work separate from your home life. You don't even have to look at work images or ever even see them when your in your PERSONAL directory of the photos app.

EDIT: By the way if someone knows of a good general purpose camera app on the app store that does not use apples default camera roll to store images I would like to know so I can use that as a workaround option for point #2 above. I haven't been able to find one that does it that way yet.

Some of the comments on here are hilarious. "There's no way Apple would do this!" "Same fake rumours every year!"

Apple would do this, absolutely. And last year by this time the first rumours about the loss of the headphone jack had been floated (and similarly dismissed by people on here). The rumours this year are actually pretty constant and I wouldn't be at all surprised if most of them are correct.

Bleh, I was hoping they wouldn't do a curved screen as I feel it detracts from screen size and usability. But I'm still hoping that they don't actually put usable screen on the curved part. I'd much prefer a straight edge screen with no bezel. Very happy about usb-c, although I'll bet it will only be the part of the cable that goes to power, and the part that plugs into the phone will still be lightning. It's Apple after all, if they can't be proprietary and gouge us with having to buy their accessories I think the world would end.

I'm definitely liking the direction the rumors are headed, this iPhone will be a beast. I hope the functional area also includes a fingerprint sensor. I feel that Samsung is making a mistake putting their fp sensor on the back, so if Apple keeps theirs in that functional area I'd be very happy. Knowing Apple they will do some cool stuff with that functional area as well, can't wait. At this point there is really nothing pushing me towards the S8 or Note 8 except the stylus support, but there are very early rumors of possible support for the Apple pencil on the iphones, that would cinch my money to Apple in a heartbeat.

Lightning is better :( can't see why they would downgrade to a lesser more bulky standard... most apple users, have plenty of lightning cables lying around.
usb-c is the right choice but I don't think Apple will move yet.
its not downgrading as usb-C has faster transfer rates, lighting connection is definitely slower.

We would have to use newly engineered, better cables that work with new macbook pros and do away with 5 year old ones? Oh the humanity!

I think My next iPhone will be a Google Pixel.

What benefit to a user does a curved screen have, what benefit does another type of connecter have when in my house we have lightening chargers in every room. Will apple update iOS to once again maximise efficiency and ease of use for customers? Until then, this iPhone is my last iPhone.

it's the software stupid. i just tried a new android phone to play around and it remains a mess of a GUI just as i remembered all those years back.

you buy the iphone for the software and user interface, not hardware anymore. Despite its many faults, it's still has the best GUI by far.

I have similar thoughts to the nav bar in Android, waste of space. Although .6" is a lot of space, so yeah Apple better come up with something good and not waste that space.

Y'all really think this is gonna happen? Apple, like any other company, cares about exactly one thing: Profit. Lightning cables suck, objectively speaking (they are slow, proprietary, expensive and volatile), but Apple gets a royalties on every lightning accessory sold. Might I remind you that Apple blocked certain 3rd party cables from charging your damn phone a couple of years back? Granted, this didn't hit "Amazon Basics" and the like, but still.
Plus, they announced Lightning exclusive headphones after they ditched the 3.5mm jack just half a year ago!

What they might do is replace the standard Lightning to USB-A for a Lightning to USB-C cable out of the box. And that sucks for everyone for a while. Not a single charger will work (not even starting to talk about cars, planes or coffee shops), 99% of laptops don't support it, but it would allow you to use your old cable.

Whereas a USB-C connector would be unfortunate for existing accessories, but would set the groundwork for a portable, powerful standard on the long run. You could charge your phone, tablet and laptop with the same cable. You could use standard, digital headphones on Apple and non-Apple devices. You wouldn't be locked in to Apples ecosystem that much. And this is exactly the opposite to what Apple has been doing for years.

really? changing connectors again? Apple must be kidding. I just spent so much money over the years on Lightning.
It should be at least a 10y period in between changes.

IIRC, its the flash storage in the iOS devices that's been the limiting factor on speed, not the type of cable.

I doubt they'll ditch lighting in favour of USB-C.
It would be a good move since a customer could have a single cable to charge its Macbook, the iPhone and maybe a future iPad. But they make money with adapters, and the right time to introduce USB-C would have been last fall with iPhone 7 when they removed the headphone jack.
And what about accessories like Pencil? A future version with USB-C? An adapter?

I think they'll stick with lighting as long as they'll need a cable, but I wouldn't mind having USB-C on next iPhone

Just so everyone is aware; USB-C is the CONNECTOR SYTEM. The USB standard is 2.0, 3.0, 3.1 etc. You can have a cable with a USB-C connector that uses USB 3.0 for example. Or you can have a USB-C cable that utilizes 3.1. A USB-C cable may or may not contain Thunderbolt 3. You get the picture.

It would be best for everyone to read up on USB-C here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USB-C

With an edge-to-edge design, the iPhone 8 is said to be similar in size to the 4.7-inch iPhone, but with a display the size of the 5.5-inch iPhone. According to Kuo, it will feature a 5.8-inch display with 5.15 inches of usable area

Will this mean that it's going to be really hard holding the phone without accidental inputs on the screen?

Why?
They dropped the 30 pin connector after 6 years. The Lighting connector has been around for 4 years.

Basically that's the only way I can justify an iPhone price is because of local workers I am supporting but my whole thing is if they make the 10th anniversary edition starting at $1000 then I can't justify it anymore. also that depends if the 10th anniversary replaces the plus line or not. This sounds a lot like last year when they said they will release 3 new iPhones and then didn't.

Good. USB-C is where they should have gone with the 6S. Very annoying, but dropping ligtning for an open standard would actually be courage unlike what they tried to say was courage last year.

Open for who? You can get cheap substandard cables from China? How about Lightning 2? It could support USB 3 speeds. Would charging run faster? No. An external hard drive? Just to be like the rest of the boys?

Far far too complicated for the average user. Not everyone takes photos for work, seems a totally redundant idea already.
