Did anyone read the part where the article suggested it will be a Lightning to USB-C cable instead of Lightning to USB-A? That's by far the more likely answer. As Macs move to all USB-C ports, the logical thing would be to have a direct connection instead of a dongle. But Lightning is a better answer on phones and tablets because of size and ease of use.

i'm thinking my next phone might just be a nokia type retro phone - call or txt if you need me!
- time to get back to living in the real world, and not be spending a $1000 to be buried in a screen all day.

USB-C. Really?

This is the right direction...but I'll be amazed if Apple drop Lightning.

EDIT: If they do this, will they also release new USB-C rechargeable keyboard, mouse and trackpad for the iMac?
That would mean Apple would need to update the iMac line... which I don't think is in Tim's pipeline.

I don't be agree Apple to adopt USB C. Why USB C when you have your own house design lighting that can distinguish yourself with those poor competitors which only know to adopt latest technology but do not know how to innovate/ integrate it to be better.

I would only support if Apple change the USB A to USB C.

Although USB C can charge faster, but do the battery capable to take the high voltage? Even though USB can send data lighting fast, but Wifi is more convenient, moreover, nowadays every thing go wireless. USB Support multiway charging, but who is going to use iphone to charge any other devices?

If I not wrong, lighting can support multiway charging too, iPad Pro is able to charge Apple Pencil.

Besides the connector: What'd be the point of having a "dedicated area below the display" for things like touch recognition? Today there already is a "dedicated area" with a dedicated TouchID button.

I could understand, if the display would be fully usable and the TouchID recognition would be just one possible content within the dedicated area. But an area not available for normal use would bring no improvement over today's solution.

Did I overlook something?

EDIT: If they do this, will they also release new USB-C rechargeable keyboard, mouse and trackpad for the iMac?
Would like to see the faces of those people who just bought new lightning head phones after ditching the 3.5mm head phones..... they will be soooooo pissed.
Thats what dongles are for.

Once I get out of the iCloud eco system and learn to love windows
Good luck! Please let me know when you're successful and how you did it. Just the other day I had to deal with a Win10 on my father-in-law's computer. Looks ugly and feels confusing. I would even prefer Win7 over that.

cool features like the curved display
Could you please explain what is considered "cool" on a curved display? I could understand if it'd be bend- and foldable, but simply curved? o_O

So the lightening port that is everywhere, iPhone, iPad, keyboard, mouse, including those new fancy AirPods, is going to be replaced?

Not gonna happen anytime soon. Apple is proud of its lightening port.

Other than with the retina MacBook being - in the long run - a replacement to the MacBook Air, when has Apple ever done this? Not trying to have an argument, I just can't think of any off the top of my head.

hi

i like the example you provide its a good similar kind of example.

in addition to that one:

1st gen iPad was called iPad.
2nd gen iPad was called iPad 2
3rd gen iPad was (simply) called iPad
(and in marketing blurb it was often called "the new iPad", but its name was just "iPad".

here is what i mean:
its the iPhone's 10th Birthday.
iPhone 8 would not be a dramatic or appropriate name.
apple loves to reduce.
reduce interfaces and hardware to get it all to disappear so we work with the essence of our own work - not deal with the device itself.
reductionism (simplification) is in apple's DNA.

the corollary to this is that apple tends to never use names like Sony uses a long stream of (Letter(s) + numbers to identify a model.
and apple really tries to avoid even Samsung level of model definition: like "Samsung Galaxy".

if the "8" is indeed revolutionary, it is almost certain it will simply be called just "iPhone" and referred to as the "the new iPhone" in marketing blurb and by all of us as well. apple returns repeatedly to older themes and memes that worked.

"hello" then "hello, again"

I think you severely misinterpreted the point of the quote from @Rogifan . She wasn't knocking Apple. She was restating the oft quoted, "Apple doesn't always do X first, but they improve and polish it." For the most part, she's right.
Also your Samsung/Android example is not a Samsung/Android example. It's a Samsung example only. If you actually did an Android comparison you find Siri and 64-bit chip were firsts on Apple hardware. Touch ID, Apple Pay, NFC, larger screens, etc... those and more are Android firsts. More importantly, it doesn't matter AT ALL. Who care's who did it first?
I just saw your Samsung/Android examples and thought it odd that you neglected to put any actual Android stuff in it.

You're totally right it doesn't matter who did things first. But it does matter if Apple come up with the overwhelming majority of ideas Samsung uses. What if Samsung actually "won" and forced Apple out of the industry? No fingerprint scanners on phones, no decent mobile wallets.

What if Samsung had bowed out of the smartphone game after they were sued by Apple in 2011? You'd have an iPhone with a 4" screen. Which, given the success of the iPhone SE (and iPhone 5S before it) wouldn't be the worst thing in the world.

I think the USB-C is more likely the other end of the cable. I dont see apple ditching lightning at this point.

In line with previous reports, The Wall Street Journal today said Apple's rumored iPhone 8 will feature a curved OLED display supplied by Samsung.

Tuesday's report corroborates previous claims from KGI Securities analyst Ming Chi-Kuo that Apple will release three devices this year: Two "S" cycle iPhones with LCD displays to succeed the current iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus, as well as a special "10th Anniversary Edition" iPhone 8.

According to WSJ's anonymous sources, Apple will drop the traditional home button on the iPhone 8 in favor of a distinct touch-enabled area on the chin of the handset, also corroborating Ming-Chi Kuo's claims of a "function area" below the new iPhone's main display. Additionally, in a new claim likely to cause much debate, the paper reports that Apple will replace the Lightning connector with a USB-C port. Indeed, all of the next iPhones are said to feature a "USB-C port for the power cord and other peripheral devices instead of the company's original Lightning connector".

Over recent weeks, reports have clashed over which models will include several purported new features. For example, citing "reliable sources" within Apple's supply chain, Japanese blog Mac Otakara most recently claimed that only the OLED model will adopt glass casing and wireless charging capabilities, contradicting a Nikkei report and analyst Kuo's repeated claims that all 2017 iPhones will feature an all-glass design and wireless charging.

Further muddying the waters, Mac Otakara made no mention of the Lightning port being dropped, despite the fact that a USB-C connector would allow newer MacBook or MacBook Pro owners to connect the iPhone 8 to their laptop straight out of the box. On the contrary, Mac Otakara's sources claimed Apple's Lightning to USB-C Cable would remain an optional purchase, which just goes to highlight the odd situation that newer Mac owners could find themselves in, should the next iMac and Mac mini models also adopt exclusively USB-C ports, as they are expected to do so. The other possible scenario is that Apple replaces the current USB-A connector on the end of the iPhone Lightning cable with USB-C.

With an edge-to-edge design, the iPhone 8 is said to be similar in size to the 4.7-inch iPhone, but with a display the size of the 5.5-inch iPhone. According to Kuo, it will feature a 5.8-inch display with 5.15 inches of usable area, with the rest dedicated to virtual buttons that will replace the existing Home button. The iPhone 8's front-facing camera may also include 3D sensing capabilities, allowing it to find the location and depth of objects in front of it, perhaps enabling facial and iris recognition. According to one report, the iPhone 8 could cost upwards of $1,000.

Article Link: iPhone 8 Will Have Curved OLED Screen and USB-C Connector

It will have a USB C - but it will still be Apple Certified.

I think My next iPhone will be a Google Pixel.

What benefit to a user does a curved screen have, what benefit does another type of connecter have when in my house we have lightening chargers in every room. Will apple update iOS to once again maximise efficiency and ease of use for customers? Until then, this iPhone is my last iPhone.
What if the pixel has a curved screen

Now people will need a Lighting to USB C adapter to use Lightning headphones? If you still use the Lightning to 3.5mm, now you'll have two adapters that you'll have to use if this rumor is true.

Yessss I was hoping they would switch to USB-C! It's gonna be awesome when eventually most devices from most manufacturers all have the same port. It's a little awkward when you change, but it's forward thinking for sure.
And yes, I had also hoped they would remove the headphone jack.

Apple, please make one with the same form factor as the SE. I can't be doing with these skinny slippery phones. God designed my fingers to be able to pick things up, not to slide something off a desk into my palm.

The comments in here are, as usual, ridiculous. No, USB-C is not better than Lightning. It's larger and does not give Apple the control for accessories that they like to have. No, Apple will not be replacing the Lightning port with USB-C. They must likely will provide a Lightning to USB-C charger and cable in the box. Seems the WSJ is getting this confused with the iPhone 8 having a USB-C port.

Maybe they mean Lightning to USB C rather than Lightning to USB A???

I think this is FAR more likely. It would solve the issue of using the new macs while retaining the smaller port that many of us are invested in.

Not gonna happen anytime soon. Apple is proud of its lightening port.

And pencil too. Agree, not happening.

Would a USB-C iPhone be compatible with devices without USB-C? Such as a CarPlay headunit?

Maybe the physical connector is better... but lighting cables are USB 2.0, which means they are slow as hell. Plus everything else in the world will be USB-C soon.

There is nothing stopping Apple for adopting higher speeds. Lightning itself isn't looked to any specific speed as far as I know? It's all related to whatever the controller in the device supports. The "new" Lightning to SD-card adapter for instance supports USB3.0 transfer speeds when connected to the iPad Pro 12-inch.

What Apple should do is ship a usb-c to lightning cable for all their devices.

I bought one and it's pretty awesome to be able to use my MBP power brick to charge my iPhone.
