Can someone please tell me what advantages USB C has over lightning?

It's easy to convince a company to make USB-C headphones (and therefore convince a customer to buy an iPhone with no headphone jack) because their headphones will also work with other phones on the market.

I don't see it happening. Happy to be proved wrong, but I can't help thinking that Lightning will go the way of the MacBook Air. Left until it's so old it can be dropped (in favour of wireless charging with tiny, hidden, Apple Watch diagnostic port).

USB-C is not gonna happen. Soon, there will be 1 billion devices in the market that use the Lightning connector standard. And what does USB-C provide over Lightning when it comes to mobile devices? Nothing. Aside from allowing geeks to carry one less cable. With the added risk of unhappy customers when their iPhones catch on fire from using 50cent USB-C charge cables. At least with MFi certification, Apple tries to make a good experience possible. Yes, I know about USB-IF, but there is no way for Apple to run that whole show.

And before you say "but but but the laptops (and soon desktops) have USB-C". That is for a different type of consumer, more likely to use the cable in the box, vs. using 17 year olds using some random USB-C left in their rental car to fry their phone when they plug it in.
I put this rumor at 50/50. Either they will or they won't. But your argument against it... it fails. Yup, there are tons of devices that use lightning. After the intro of USB-C, those devices will still be able to use lightning. It was the same when Apple converted from 30 pin. People survived and adapted then, they will do the same now. We don't know if there will be benefits over lightning. Depends on what Apple does with their USB-C implementation. Catching fire with 50 cent USB-C cables? You mean like with the 50 cent lightning cables hanging on a rack in every gas station across the country? Apple can also offer MFi certification on USB-C cables. Not an issue.

I expect this is about USB-C in the power brick, not the phone itself. So it will ship with a lightning to USB cable, and in 5 more years (a full 10 years just like the 30 pin), Apple will go wireless only.

Lightning is better :( can't see why they would downgrade to a lesser more bulky standard... most apple users, have plenty of lightning cables lying around.

Lightning cables, 30-pin connector cables, micro-USB cables, mini-USB cables, USB-C cables - could have bought a share or two of APPL for what the cables cost.

i would welcome this change. but i'm not counting on it.

it would be so much easier to have just one connector for every device.

it takes some years for this to be the reality, but it's better to start early.

Its going to be interesting to see it - with all the crap about who copied who, in much the same way there was no getting away from the fact that the original Galaxy did take a lot of cues from the iPhone, this iPhone will surely be taking significant cues from the Galaxy. But yes, I know, who knows until its released.

"Courage" to move everyone to lightning (only) with the 7 (which I own by the way) and trying to get people to purchase lightning headphones, then dropping the port for another one the next year causing everyone to have adaptors for adaptors.
When I think about it I doubt they'd drop it, but then again this is tim cook's apple. We're all going to be doomed.
The iPhone 8 will tell if this is my last iPhone (until Cook is kicked out or dead)

It didn't stop them from cutting off the old connector to go with Lightening Connectors. I can totally see them just cutting off Lightening.
They switched from 30-pin because it was too big, was more fragile, and had less functionality than Lightning. USB-C doesn't have those benefits over Lightning.

The EU has mandated that mobile devices must use a common standard charger, not proprietary. Apple is not going to make a EU model. It's less expensive to drop lighting for all models and migrate to USB-C. This "news" really should not be a shock to anyone.

How about USB c is the other end? Lighting stays (for the time being) and you can plug into new macs and use old lighting cables as well.

That's just a case of throwing a USB-C to Lightning cable (already available from the Apple Store) into the box. Neither magical nor courageous, and what they should have done with the iPhone 7 (on a product costing the thick end of $1000, Apple can afford to put 2 cables in the box).

If they do switch to USB-C on the phone & standard charger then everybody without a MacBook or a 2016 MBP will need a USB-C to USB-A cable anyway.

Truth is, if they're going to switch to USB-C then they should have done that with the iPhone 7, before dropping the audio jack and creating a market for Lightning headphones.

If the new iPads come first, it will be interesting to see what connector they have...

Curved screen is something from Samsung released a couple of years ago. Not interested.
A screen with right angles and some virtual buttons on the sides would be great and much more usable.

You just said it..."standard"

Personally this would be the best thing, mainly because when it goes to iPad it means no longer having device specific dongles for trivial things like SD card readers.

Also this means one cable/adapter can charge your phone, laptop, or iPad. So much better for travel. And over a friends house it is no longer a question of whether they have a charger for your phone, even if they are on android (given a year or so for wider adoption.)

USB-C? I don't see this happening. But who knows, I couldn't see them switching to lighting when they did either. With lightning, there was a clear benefit. I just don't see the benefit with USB-C.

A multi-purpose industry standard port, cross compatible with gazillions of peripherals, accessories and computer hardware that will be around for years and you don't see the benefit?

Whilst I am not sure it will happen this year, the benefits are there for all to see.

it has become very quiet about this "mandate". i can not find detailed information when this will come into effect and what exactly it means. because all i ever read is "a universal charger". which could very well only be the charger itself, without the cable.

If this holds true and everything continues to be fragmented in Apple’s line-up, Steve Jobs will be rolling in his grave.

My guess is the leak got confused and that the iphone still has lightning just the other end of the included cable has switched to usb-c. Makes more sense and allows the new imac users the ability to connect to their new iphone. This also allows any current lightning cable to usb-a to still work.

If this happens, it'll be interesting to see the upgrade cycle change. People waiting for this S year would have a new option, and the same for everyone else the year after. Apple would effectively offer next years standard hardware at a substantial premium. Kerching.

What if they release Lighting as a mini USB-C spec? kinda like they did with DisplayPort and Thunderbolt.
