Get some imagination, people! Rather than screaming about this, take some time and think it though: this could definitely replace or be an alternative to TouchID for most use cases. Just pick up your phone and you're logged in. The 3D/IR aspect of it provides much greater security against spoofing. The fact that it is IR means it can work in the dark (a complaint I heard on here yesterday).

And this is just for authentication. Think of the other uses this could have in the VR realm.

If these rumors prove true, this device may be the most revolutionary phone since the original iPhone.

Seems rather pointless if true as I'm pretty sure Microsofts Hello feature doesn't have that fancy stuff, and it seems to work just fine from what people say.
I'd still rather just have a finger print scanner on a phone.

Hmm the more I think about it, the more it just seems this camera tech will replace Touch ID and I bet that's because they can't make the finger print scanner work through the screen, or it will not offer them the usual massive mark up in profits they love so much at Apple. I bet you will see a no Touch ID all glass
screen design with face detection, which is cheap tech as Microsoft have been using it for years now.

Lived all my life without this and I MUST have this now because?

I get your point but people have always lived all their lives without XYZ before XYZ came along. It doesn't in itself mean an innovation is worthless.

I am sure somebody will (or has already) strap(ped) an iPhone to a contraption making it VR glasses.

They certainly have! Did you forget about Google's Cardboard?

On a phone?

Yep

3D has not taken off yet with the masses. Too many limitations.

Because I expect Apple to do what it does best: take an emerging product category with a frustrating user experience and proceeed to deliver a polished product made possible by its control over both the hardware and software.

Edge to edge screen and a beneath the screen fingerprint sensor that works as well as the current sollution is all Im asking. Everything else is icing

Explain "galaxy of Apps/ digital crown " on Apl watch at launch then. while at that explain "Planet of the Apps"

So help me god, if they actually go about making the stupid Avatars they came up with using this tech I'm going to be pissed.

Hopefully they're doing something useful with this technology instead.
Are you seriously complaining about placeholder art in a patent application? What's wrong with you?

Whilst having this with the IR on the front camera makes a use case for the facial recognition (functionality I'm still not sold on). Surely the bigger application use is to have this on the back of the device with the other cameras? At least we can approximate an AR headset this way round with a little bit of Cardboard love.

3D avatars would be interesting for about 5 minutes and we've seen no indications of glasses-less 3D, Nintendo 3DS style, in the rumours that could make this a killer FaceTime feature.

This rumor makes me suspect that if this functionality comes to pass it will be like the NFC chip for Apple Pay and not a developer facing feature.

Are you seriously incapable of reading? I didn't comment on the art, I commented on the notion of avatars and posted a link to the supporting evidence. Please read, try real hard.

TouchID isn't going anywhere. I have 10 fingers but only 1 face. A security person can force the phone in front of my face and unlock the phone. Which finger will do that is unknown.

'3D sensing' means 2 cameras. Anything else is a software hack.
Did you read the article?

The camera will function by merging the depth information captured by the IR transmitting and receiving modules

This sounds terrible. Way too much unnecessary change.
What in god's name does that even mean?

Really? I guess I haven't noticed any Windows Phone owners using this feature.
Maybe that's just because there aren't that many, or maybe it's not something you'd even notice. But that doesn't detract from the point being made that Windows Phone can already do this.
