Seems rather pointless if true as I'm pretty sure Microsofts Hello feature doesn't have that fancy stuff, and it seems to work just fine from what people say.
I'd still rather just have a finger print scanner on a phone.

Hmm the more I think about it, the more it just seems this camera tech will replace Touch ID and I bet that's because they can't make the finger print scanner work through the screen, or it will not offer them the usual massive mark up in profits they love so much at Apple. I bet you will see a no Touch ID all glass
screen design with face detection, which is cheap tech as Microsoft have been using it for years now.
This is ridiculous. Touch ID is how Apple Pay works. Its not going anywhere.

No thanks. I wold rather get a Galaxy which offers the same features for $800. Cant afford to spend 1k every year on iPhones

Not really sure who is spending that much.

1) Even still phones are subsidized "back door." When the iPhone 7 came out every carrier was offering a free 64GB iPhone 7 or credits for the retail cost of that phone toward a higher model.

2) No one needs a new phone every year. Even every 2 years is unnecessary, just something we are use to because of the old 2 year contracts.

3) Even those who upgrade annually most are not spending the total cost of the phone upfront -- they are in a carrier financing plan.

4) People like me who do buy their phone outright don't really care about the price tag because we know we'll get some of that back when we do upgrade. It basically works out to the same $ as financing but just a tad bit easier to switch carriers at-will

5) People who are in the iPhone eco-system are not going to switch to Android or Windows. (Same goes the opposite way). They have too much time and energy (and $ in apps) invested and also would have to expend more time and energy to transfer to another OS. If the flagship model is too expensive they'll either delay upgrading or go with a less expensive model. But likely people will just finance because a $10 bump in monthly price mentally does not register as being $100-200 more.

6) The rumored $1000 price tag is likely for the high end 256GB model, not the 64 or 128GB model most are interested in.

There are so many more useful things that Apple can innovate on, like fold-out double sized screens, better customizable keyboards, a super battery, unbreakable plexiglass displays...
Dunno what the hack they are doing or what Jony Ive is playing around with (cardboard boxes, christmas trees and shop displays that anybody else can make)
It seems like 75% of the designers are asking themselves with the others do
Look what other companies can accomplish with 100k people on board (in the aerospace or car industry, furniture whatever...)
No matter what Apple does posters here will always say they should be doing something else. Of course if this story was avout Google or Microsoft people would be praising it and complaining about how they're the ones doing all this innovative stuff and all Apple knows how to do is make things thinner and watch bands.

It's rumoured to be a replacement for Touch ID.

Today's news of an overhaul to the front-facing camera of the iPhone 8 follows speculation surrounding the potential of Apple dropping Touch ID and instead focusing on either 3D facial recognition or iris scanning as the device's main security feature. JPMorgan analyst Rod Hall has stated that facial recognition could be a more secure alternative, and help increase Apple Pay adoption with retailers and financial institutions.

They better change the look of the phone too, or the pitchforks will be out regardless how much revolutionary tech they pack in it.

What does that mean? What about the "look of the phone" are you complaining about? You make a completely vague statement and then claim the world will rebel if the iPhone "look" doesn't change. I hope you aren't looking for credibility.

True, but swipe to open use to be how to unlock your iDevice. Now it's something different. iPhones use to use the iPod Connector. Then they used Lighting. Point is what ever is now doesn't mean it will be next year, especially with Apple. It has no hesitation to change the paradigm on a dime.

So what do MR posters consider innovative (other than anything being done by companies not named Apple)?

I can't speak for other MR posters, but by definition not all changes are innovative. My only point.

What I mentioned (= fold-out double sized screens, better customizable keyboards, a super battery, unbreakable plexiglass displays) are needs by millions and millions of people that are never are being heard.
Because Apple, the great social ignorers have put the largest digital shredder behind feedback@apple.com
It collects/shares/sells every bit of your information unless you specifically ask them something.
So all their caring and sharing pretentions are marketing buttalk and all 3D/4D/5D camera's egoist hobby horses.
Then how surprised can you be about the tone of voice in forums like these ?
(and No, I'm not switching to Xiaomi or Huawei because I invested in Apple for years and years now to deliver instead of lamentate)

The closer we get to the Galaxy S8 launch, the more rumors are "leaked". Apple PR people are operating at the genius level. How many people will hold off on the S8 to get the Iphone 8? Probably me.

Speaking for myself I long for the day Apple WOWs me again. I'd love to see them take a risk - the nearest thing so far has been AirPods (look bloody stupid, lacking some basic features but generally impressive).
They keep playing it safe, boring and lacking imagination though. What happened to the dreamers?

At least MS and Google have tried something different.

Indeed, people used to live happily without smartphones, PCs, cars and toilets.

It's comments like this that keep me on these forums. Comparing a smart phone camera for facial and iris recognition to major advancements in plumbing and transportation. Priceless.

This is ridiculous. Rotary dials are how phones work. They're not going anywhere.

At your request you have been added to the New iPhone Purchase Ban For Life list.

From all the comments I got, I gather that's only fair.

How about I show remorse when somebody figures out what to do with 3D and with a reduced sentence I will be allowed to buy 2020 (When I would anyway?;-)

Just a correction: Touch ID IS NOT a requirement of Apple Pay and is not how Apple Pay works

you can use Password authentication for Apple Pay..... But who the bloody heck would want too. TouchID and fingerprint reading is so much faster and convenient.'

so Adding another new way of authentication isn't a bad thing. Gives users options of using many different types, or even setting up dual factor auth which might require both Finger and retina to allow to unlock / pay, for even better security.

I call shenanigans on this rumor. Finger print is so much easier to use over scanning someone's iris.

I disagree - because I do not know for sure what is easier for a computer to do and I don't know the reason why they might switch to this system. If they do switch it could be because it is better. Also - maybe they are not doing retina scans, maybe the lasers will be doing a 3D scan of your face and head shape as your authentication key. Maybe that way will be better.

Face recognition may (or may not) be a significant step up in security. I'm not qualified to judge and since most of the public haven't seen or used the product and security firms haven't evaluated it that's an answer that will have to wait for September. I do remember when the Touch ID was first released and various "experts" were saying it would not be secure and it could be hacked using a scanned thumbprint, which may have been true but evidently it was still a step up in security, from reading sites devoted to phone and internet security. So I'll wait for someone competent to evaluate it and not just random opinions from the web.

Other features such as OLED and edge to edge screen I don't THINK I care one way or the other, but since I haven't seen or used it I may be wrong.

Rumored 3D camera? Once again, never had one so I don't know how important it is. In 3 to 5 years it may seem quaint and old fashioned to look at 2D pictures, or it could be a DOA concept like 3D movies have mostly been, especially for home viewing.

Think I'll have to wait until September to find out what really is being released, and maybe a couple of months after that to find out what's good and what's not.

Lived all my life without this and I MUST have this now because?

I'm curious

Why must you NEED to be able to use a feature for it to have value on a device in any way?

I don't NEED a lot of the features phones come with. YOu know what I do? Don't use them. I would still rather Apple and everyone else try new functionality and features than 'play it safe' and only release the same thing over and over again.

And as long as the functionality is "additive" and doesn't take anything away, there's no harm to it. it's like Force touch. you don't have to use it. but it's there if you want

Cool new tech, but 90% of the posts here are negative. Some people need to get lives.
[doublepost=1487687524][/doublepost]

Because "Apple is stupid", there will be no iOS support for this feature. Or is it because "Tim is greedy"?:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

English please?

I call shenanigans on this rumor. Finger print is so much easier to use over scanning someone's iris.

what do you use when you're bundled up in -20c weather with 2 layers of gloves on?

just one particular use case that iris scanner works better than a fingerprint scanner.

Picture this scenario: I'm heading to work. it's a nice -20c day out. Car hasn't had time to warm up yet and is still pumping out cold air. I still have my gloves on because you know, that cold steering wheel and air. I decide I want a coffee and go to the Timmies drive through. With an iris Scanner, I can tap my phone to pay, and then authenticate with my eyes to complete the transaction, without ever taking my gloves off!

Of course if this story was avout Google or Microsoft people would be praising it and complaining about how they're the ones doing all this innovative stuff and all Apple knows how to do is make things thinner and watch bands.

Microsoft (WinTel) already has this LOL, and when it came out there were not your " praising it and complaining about how they're the ones doing all this innovative stuff" Windows Hello was met with "meh..ok" and where's the fingerprint reader?...in actual use its magical and better, if we tout it its to help the Apl user understand what is possible with both IRIS and 3D Facial recognition since so many lament the loss of Touch ID , which I'll admit is pretty nice (less secure but ok) . We might get "blown away" with stuff like the Hololens and tout that as that took eight years of secret development with a secret Intel cherry core processor..that is impressive near Star Trek tech..I tried it and its tech is truly revolutionary...a new interface and development landscape for any industry.

Apl does some innovation themselves obviously beyond watch bands, they bought this facial tech and if incorporating it is "innovation" then I guess we need a new definition of innovation. I do appreciate Apl inventing magsafe, i benefit from that innovation on my SP4 with the magnetic surface connector. and magnetic pen holder..so sometimes they innovate other times they follow.

Apl thrived when no one really paid attention to material design and high end, now EVERYONE does and Apl's secret sauce is an also-ran. Lately they have been following rather than innovating, that's ok because Iphone is a cash cow.

The reason your are overly sensitive to this topic is not much has happened in Apl since the Ipad in 2009..show me the devices and not a watch that does not stay and goes obsolete in a year or so on and a gimped TV with terrible remote. Something at least on par with what Ipad did for a few years until 2-in -1's became the rage.

How hard can it be to use plexiglass for an unbreakable iPhone
As a side-effect, it may stop all those lunatic YouTubers and derailed idiots in the USA splashing their iPhones from 15m towers.
