Lived all my life without this and I MUST have this now because?

3D has not taken off yet with the masses. Too many limitations.

I am sure somebody will (or has already) strap(ped) an iPhone to a contraption making it VR glasses.
At your request you have been added to the New iPhone Purchase Ban For Life list.

Not new and not innovative. Windows Hello has been doing this for years.
Not sure you know what "new" or "innovative" means in terms of technology, also not sure you know about when there is enough information to even make such a claim.

So help me god, if they actually go about making the stupid Avatars they came up with using this tech I'm going to be pissed.

Hopefully they're doing something useful with this technology instead.
I think this is meant to be funny... in case not, obviously they are. Facial recognition and Augmented Reality. Are those not potentially useful to you?

Personally I hope Apple will not get rid of Touch ID, I'm 99% confident they will not. How will people unlock their phones in bed with lights out? Unless maybe infrared will be used not just for depth perception but for outline and content fill?

Facial and other visual recognition will most likely be part of a stand alone 2-part authentication or even a mixed 3-part authentication for highly sensitive authentication uses.

If the new technology used is precise and powerful enough, you will be able to map augmented reality onto 3D surfaces and you will be able to scan a room to create a rough 3D model. It think this will be incredibly useful for many applications.

I'm also worried that Apple is just slapping on features for the sake of it. The real innovation needs to come in the form of iOS.

This is really cool and exciting technology but it isn't worthy of replacing Touch ID because you have to be in the range of the camera, which isn't convenient for Apple Pay.

I dunno. Is there any good reason why Apple Pay cannot be enabled for even a full minute after unlocking it with our face?

The likelihood of someone playing man-in-the-middle during that time, seems pretty tiny.

How long is Apple Pay enabled on the Watch once you double-click? How long on the phone if you use a passcode instead of TouchId?

Hmm, a plan could come together quite nicely for me here. ;)

Q4 this year for my newly revised/improved top-spec 15" rMBP and Q4 next year for a newly revised/improved iPhone 8 and Apple Watch with watchOS 4. Pending all predictions and estimates being accurate, of course. :p

Much gratitude to my tech savvy friend who gently and wisely advised me to avoid buying the 1st gen MBP 2016, and get an OS re-install on my current laptop instead. I will continue to take this approach. :) "All good things come to those who wait". Violet Fane, 1892.

Cool new tech, but 90% of the posts here are negative. Some people need to get lives.

Because "Apple is stupid", there will be no iOS support for this feature. Or is it because "Tim is greedy"?:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

No thanks. I wold rather get a Galaxy which offers the same features for $800. Cant afford to spend 1k every year on iPhones

As the article refers to iPhone 8 has it not occured to anyone this iPhone may be 18 months away? Apple does not celebrate anniversaries (apart from a Mac which just had a paint job) so what makes people think they will skip the S cycle. People say Apple can't stay with the same design for four years but every year they keep selling more.

I call shenanigans on this rumor. Finger print is so much easier to use over scanning someone's iris.

I agree. In a business meeting, you can have the phone incognito (partially under a table), do the finger print scan, and kinda look down to see notifications. With iris and face scanning, you need to bring your phone into full view which is a distraction.

Also, why is it more secure... doesn't everyone have different finger prints? And if a thief knocks you out, they can still scan your face just as easily as your finger prints?

If you're correct (and I don't think you are), I'd be out shorting Apple stock. If they don't deliver something like what we've been hearing a lot about, they are going to tank.

In all seriousness, if the phone were not to be as ground-breaking as we are being led to believe, I think Apple would be quietly informing their trusted media friends that the rumors are all smoke and no fire. There is no upside for them allowing these rumors to persist if there's no basis. Could really hurt them as company.

*Apple isn't innovating anymore!*
*Apple is making too many changes!*
There are so many more useful things that Apple can innovate on, like fold-out double sized screens, better customizable keyboards, a super battery, unbreakable plexiglass displays...
Dunno what the hack Jony Ive is playing around with (cardboard boxes and shop displays that anybody else can make)
It seems like 75% of the designers are asking themselves with the others do
Look what other companies can accomplish with 100k people on board (in the aerospace or car industry, furniture whatever...)

Hmm the more I think about it, the more it just seems this camera tech will replace Touch ID and I bet that's because they can't make the finger print scanner work through the screen, or it will not offer them the usual massive mark up in profits they love so much at Apple. I bet you will see a no Touch ID all glass
screen design with face detection, which is cheap tech as Microsoft have been using it for years now.

Does seem a little suspect. I'm going for price hike on the top end model.

I wish they'd spend as much time revamping iOS (and i don't just mean a new theme or more 'social' features).

We seem to be getting into the realm of pointless features, for the sake of features now.
