As the article refers to iPhone 8 has it not occured to anyone this iPhone may be 18 months away? Apple does not celebrate anniversaries (apart from a Mac which just had a paint job) so what makes people think they will skip the S cycle. People say Apple can't stay with the same design for four years but every year they keep selling more.

Well the expectation this year for something new and bold from Apple is so high, with so media outlets including MR making a prediction of it most likely happening to not only mark the iPhone's tenth anniversary, but also to give Tim something big to announce at Apple's first product announcement at the new spaceship campus. If Tim only has a three-year-old design to offer, expect a big drop along with a lot of negative publicity, maybe not at launch, but soon after, bigger than the 6s drop last year. This will mark a great opportunity for Tim to do what he does best lately, upsell, in this case a new design at a $200 premium over a "value" 7s/7s Plus.

The first time Microsoft used this kind of tech was with the Kinect on the XBox 360. The Kinect sensors and tech were developed by the company PrimeSense.
Kinect wasn't designed to do secure biometrics.
Apple bought PrimeSense a few years ago and probably will use this tech (an improved version of it) if they do implement face recognition, so I don't see how you could say that Apple/PrimeSense tech is a RealSense "clone", as it's closer to being the other way around.
3D imaging cameras for facial and gesture recognition in general are not new, and Primesense was neither the only nor the first company in this field. Others included e.g. Panasonic (D-IMager), Softkinetic, and Creative (Senz3D).

A 60 year-old guy has lived most part of his life without internet, must he have internet now? Not really. It depends.

I welcome any innovation Apple could bring to the market. When touchID first surfaces, many discarded its potential, because? :D

65 in April please:)Let's just say I have scaled back what is useful for what I do.

The internet I can do things with! 3-D = not so much (at this point)
Tried a few movies with the funny glasses, was nice, but not a MUST have.

But, as soon as we have 3-D internet and the *******s of the world drive things it may get interesting.

PS: Funny what gets starred out. USA is the biggest producer in the World for that industry.

Lived all my life without this and I MUST have this now because?

3D has not taken off yet with the masses. Too many limitations.

I am sure somebody will (or has already) strap(ped) an iPhone to a contraption making it VR glasses.

'Lived all my life without' <- This is applicable to any future innovation so why bother reading a tech blog if you don't like or want new stuff?

Indeed, people used to live happily without smartphones, PCs, cars and toilets.
Well, you need a toilet to toss your malfunctioning smart phone into.

Haven't noticed people being any "Happier" with cell phones, except in Apple Ads.

The vitriol on these Macrumors news forums is astounding. Do you people just lurk here to pile on the hate?

There certainly is a lot of virtriol indeed. But it's not worth investing your time reading in to it. You have to weed though the negativity. There are a lot of good and knowledgeable forum members on here.

On Topic: I think the facial recognition will serve more than just for security features. I could see it being used for exclusive applications and perhaps some implement with motion detection for the home screen or multitasking.

What does that mean? What about the "look of the phone" are you complaining about? You make a completely vague statement and then claim the world will rebel if the iPhone "look" doesn't change. I hope you aren't looking for credibility.

I'm sure that I'm not alone in finding your response overly sensitive and unwarranted. In the interest of clarity, the post that you responded to stated:

"They better change the look of the phone too, or the pitchforks will be out regardless how much revolutionary tech they pack in it."

The point being made is quite clear, and I'm not sure why you require further elucidation. However, for your benefit, I believe the poster was driving at the following. The front-side of the iPhone 7 is indistinguishable in appearance from that of the 6 or the 6s; it has not been changed for three years running. Over the same period of time, the back of the phone has not gone through any significant tweaks to its appearance (only a couple of minor revisions: a reduction in those infamous antenna lines/some additional colour options).
Although the iPhone 7 introduced significant internal changes, for many people the change wasn't readily felt or perceived, since the physical appearance was practically unchanged from the last two iPhone generations. The poster's point is that, if the "look" of the upcoming iphone is once again insignificantly altered from the physical appearance of the 6, 6s, or 7 - thereby, representing the 4th generation of iPhone with the same look - the sentiment that the new phone isn't that new or significantly different from the last gen may deepen even further, no matter the extent of internal technological advancement.

Perhaps you could think things through a bit more, before you start agonising over the credibility of clearly articulated posts.

No, of course not. I bother, because whatever comes along that is useful I like to learn about
and possibly buy.

aWatch, 2016 MBP, iMacs (or any desktop), current iPads (my 2nd get is still good to use) all not useful for me, because there is a certain way I do and use things.
Does not make them bad products. Same for 3-D = not useful for me at this point.

That is just my opinion without constantly posting IMO.

I almost coincidently guessed your age correctly. Wish you in advance a memorable birthday. Stay healthy, and stay hunger, like the late Steve Jobs used to say.

Seems rather pointless if true as I'm pretty sure Microsofts Hello feature doesn't have that fancy stuff, and it seems to work just fine from what people say.

Windows Hello on Surface is using Intel Realsense which basically combines a normal camera with infrared to map your face including depth. It's not really that fancy, just needs an 8$ off the shelf part and software implementation.
After scanning your face from a few different angles and distances it works in 1 to 2 seconds. Might appear longer sometimes but that's animation and other Windows stuff, the actual unlock is already done.

Zero percent chance touch ID will be replaced. Think how easy it would be for law enforcement or even a thief to unlock someones phone if fingerprint or passcode is not required.

$1000 phone? Let's be real now...

The rumored "iPhone 8" with an edge-to-edge OLED display will gain a "revolutionary" front-facing camera system that consists of three modules that enable fully-featured 3D sensing capabilities, according to new predictions shared by KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. The upgraded camera system will be fueled by PrimeSense algorithms, which Apple acquired in 2013.

The three modules include an existing front camera module of current iPhones, an infrared transmitting module, and an infrared receiving module. Using these advancements, the camera will be able to find the location and depth of objects placed in front of it, with potential applications including facial and iris recognition.

The camera will function by merging the depth information captured by the IR transmitting and receiving modules with the traditional 2D images captured by the front camera. This not only could be used for the iPhone 8's long-rumored iris recognition feature, but even in some gaming applications -- and future AR/VR experiences -- where users could place their own 3D-scanned face in the game using a quick selfie.

Today's news of an overhaul to the front-facing camera of the iPhone 8 follows speculation surrounding the potential of Apple dropping Touch ID and instead focusing on either 3D facial recognition or iris scanning as the device's main security feature. JPMorgan analyst Rod Hall has stated that facial recognition could be a more secure alternative, and help increase Apple Pay adoption with retailers and financial institutions.

According to Kuo, this three-module front-facing camera system "will bring an innovative user experience" to the OLED iPhone 8, but for now it'll be reserved as exclusive to that model. "Future iPhones may come with a similar system for the rear camera," the analyst noted.

Sadly this will turn into emoji hell :( less gimmicks please apple

I'm sorry. Emoji HELL? Explain to me exactly what Emoji hell is...
My iPhone operates on the principal that if I don't want to use emoji, I NEVER HAVE TO DEAL WITH THEM. They're hidden behind a keyboard that only activates when I want it to -- and interacting with a keyboard is really not that stressful an operation.
You clearly have some sort of different phone that apperntly reaches out and strangles you or waterboards you or something, in some way that involves Emoji? I think we'd all like to know how this works.

$1000 phone? Let's be real now...

It's the usual Internet BS. Start with the absolute most expensive possible model of a phone. Pump up the price even more. Then throw out a constant stream of clickbait that strongly implies that that --- UNPROVEN MAXIMUM POSSIBLE --- price in fact corresponds the the MINIMUM price that anyone will have to pay.

It's basically the equivalent of running around saying that it now costs $24,000 to fly from LAX to London while leaving out the fine print that that's if you insist on buying a first class ticket on one day's notice.

Developer / engineer time assigned to gimmicks.

When I see a software release , where Emoji are the main feature, that's an issue for me. Feel free to disagree.

This is ridiculous. Touch ID is how Apple Pay works. Its not going anywhere.

No more ridiculous the charging over $1000 for 64GB storage. I bet I'm right. We'll see though.

Actually Windows Hello requires a Realsense camera, which is an IR-sensing 3D camera as well. This makes the face recognition more reliable (e.g. when the lighting is bad) and more secure (due to the 3D imaging, the system cannot be fooled e.g. by holding a photograph in front of the camera). This "revolutionary" camera sounds like a Realsense clone.

I don't know if this rumor is true, but it would fit with this story from last year:

http://www.pcworld.com/article/3048...lans-to-make-realsense-emotionally-smart.html

Yeah, I didn't believe for a second it was 'revolutionary', Apple has never made anything that is. It just buys everyone else's tech, or copies it in this case, from Microsoft.

It's incredible how much time Android and Windows trolls have to post at length on an Apple-centric site.

It must be an indicator of their insecurity over their product choices.

There's no way of you knowing that until you actually see the technology being released of what it's capable of doing. I do think touch ID will be available For while, until Iris scanning is completely security relevant for phones or ready for release.

I almost coincidently guessed your age correctly. Wish you in advance a memorable birthday. Stay healthy, and stay hunger, like the late Steve Jobs used to say.

Thank you. Thought you got that from some other posts where I mentioned it .
As I get older I simplify things, but I'll stay open minded for new tech, when it's ready:)

I was simply addressing that you called this potential Apple tech a "RealSense clone", the fact that you name other companies whose work preceded PrimeSense only reinforces my point that calling it a clone is not warranted.

The phone isn't going to b as spectacular as people believe, every year people come up with the most bogus ideas of what the iPhone will do and how it will look and it always ends up being more of the same. IF they do have a phone with edge to edge display and nice camera there will surely be a hefty price to go with it. The iPhone ripped off HTC's dual camera, metal body/antenna bands, live photos, dual speakers etc... They copied Samsung's display, and LG's rear finger print sensor. The "3D" camera IDEA floating around is based off the separation of the dual camera len's for better depth (Much like we saw on the HTC One m8 3-4 years ago. But hey I-Fans will be happy to let apple take credit for ideas they copied and improved. Apples iPhone has always seemed inspired by HTC handsets, and I can guarantee it's only a matter of time before apple starts putting sensors throughout the front, sides and back of thier handsets, as HTC is rumored to be doing this year.

Welcome to Intel RealSense 3D apl copy...in other news Hololens is skipping v2 going straight to v3.... explanation: lack of competition

Here's why:

Already a game changer in Industry

The game changer is the HiMax chip inside, it holds all the AR patents.
