Yes if you want all the features you listed you can pay extra and get all of the features you want in the same model
Not always; there are features available to more expensive cars and not the cheaper ones. No matter what I'm willing to pay I just can't get radar-based cruise control on a Versa or Echo :( This is not at all uncommon in most areas, not just cars and phones.

All I was saying is it would be nice if you could get the 4.7" iPhone with all of the latest and greatest features as the 5.5" for the people that want a phone and not a phablet as a phone.

I'm pretty sure that an overdue design update will persuade many to upgrade. The 7 Plus has good battery life. The 7 is okay. Is Apple realizing that an obsession with thinness isn't as important to many consumers as battery life? Let's hope so.

You're wrong on both accounts. It may be ok for someone for uses iPhone for occasional photo, maybe some light music playing and a call or two per day while most of the time the phone just wastes space on your pocket/purse/desk/whatever.

I'm still waiting for a phone that provides enough juice to survive higher than average use even for a normal work day. I recharge my 6+ every night, take it out of the charger around 9am and by 2pm I need to plug it in or switch to low power mode which renders it useless for me for most of the tasks. I refuse to buy a phone with smaller battery than that one.

Most people don't seem to realize your phone really IS a powerhouse these days. You can use it for so many things, but should you wish to do so requires it to have the screen on most of the time -> battery drain is much bigger and the miniature batteries Apple uses just can't cope.

The same applies to that horrible Crapbook Pro. No amount of battery saving measures help when you actually USE THE DEVICE. Currently my MBP replacement is a hacked x220 with slice battery and FHD screen. Less than $1k for 16GB/1TB SSD/i7/whatever in a smaller form (not including thickness), but the biggest benefit: 10h+ REAL LIFE battery life. Even when I actually use the damned machine. I struggled to get even 3-4h with the 2016 MBProletariat. Maybe MBP2016, linkbase and lots of superglue might be an option but then again, it'd be 6 times as expensive and have a worse keyboard.

So, please save those 2700mAh toy batteries to those who don't use even quarter of their devices' potential. Or at least have the decency of not mentioning them in the same sentence with "much improved battery life". Make iPhone 8+ with 6kmAh battery and I'll buy it. I don't care if it's thicker, it's for work, not decoration.

How is it possible that you aren't aware that you're talking about the downpayment on a subsidized phone rather than the actual price of the phone?

In other words, iPhones have never cost $200. I think the very first one I paid around $500 USD for, and in the US, the $650 US has been the entry level price point for years and years.

In other countries, our currencies have made the iPhone more expensive over time... I paid almost $1200 Canadian for my iPhone 7.

I liked when iPhones were $200.

Not to sound pedantic, but you questioned What about the ones that want the smaller regular model but want the upgraded features? which sounds, well, like entitlement. Sure it would be nice but companies differentiate lines and features all the time and we don't always get what we want in the model we can afford :(, though yes, it would be nice :)

At the moment I have a 'Smart Battery' case on my phone so I can get a decent days usage out of it without worrying, I use hotspot quite a lot. I'd much rather have a phone that had a decent battery in it in the first place. Hoping this might offer that.

Went from iPhone 6 to Moto Z Play and I get 5 days battery usage out of it with light to medium use on it - consistently. But that's on Android so, question to you is, do you really want more battery out of your phone enough to change phones or are you asking for something that's not likely to happen on iOS but with incremental battery improvements here and there? Not knocking the iPhone but Apple's way of wafer thinness over function.

In real life situations I doubt you're going to see more than a 10% - 20% increase in battery life. If the iPhone 8 is anywhere near its rumored price of $999 then I don't think an extra hour or two of battery life is going to factor into the decision to pay a $230 premium over a 7S+ or $350 more than a 7S (assuming the now four-generation old designs don't drop in price).

I've got a 6+ and would probably upgrade to the 8 for the same $770 the 7+ costs even though it is going to have a .4" smaller effective screen once you exclude the rumored touch bar on the bottom that will replace the home button. Anything over $799 and I'm out.

I think Apple is going to be unpleasantly surprised if they are depending on pent-up demand from people that own a 6 or 6S to justify the 30% price hike being rumored. I think you'll see quite a few 7S+ or even 7+ sales cannibalizing the 8. It isn't going to look good if iPhone sales mirror the iPad and the older models outsell the new ones by a large margin.

As much as I'd like to see that cannibalizing as an Apple wake up call, I just don't think it will happen. Look at the iPhone 7 sales. It has been selling really well for a phone with the same basic design in it's third generation with only incremental changes to it.

Other evidence - Raising the prices of the MacBook Pro's by as much as $400 and forcing people to do their drive and ram upgrades at the time of purchase would surely result is lots of lost sales. But nada - didn't happen instead sales are doing very good.

I totally believe by Apple's own record of raising prices that they will indeed charge more for the iPhone 8 and I totally can believe that the sales will beat last yoy sales.

Of course it's just my opinion and I could be totally wrong.

Sorry if that came off as sounding entitled as that is not the case at all. I have no problem paying the same price as the bigger more expensive model. What I am talking about is there are a lot of people that want the same latest and greatest features as the bigger 5.5" iPhone but in the 4.7" and are willing to pay for it. It has nothing to do with what I can afford. Give me a 4.7" iPhone with the same upgraded features as the 5.5" iPhone and I will happily pay the same price for it. But you can't. I just wish they would make both phones with the same features and charge accordingly. But the ones that want the 4.7" size are left out with being able to purchase the latest and greatest. I just prefer a phone and not a phablet. That's all I am saying.

Let's consider making the phone 2mm bigger to accommodate a second battery... check this video out.

I agree, I would happily have a phone that was a couple mm thicker to have a way bigger battery. I find the phones to thin as they are now and are hard to hang onto. I prefer a thicker phone and way better battery life any day.

On hardware side it's even more pathetic Apple doesn't roll out updated products yearly like every other tech competitor does. Especially when you know that most of the inner parts are available, made and upgraded by third party tech companies. For the size Apple is today and the small categories they're in it's beyond my comprehension why they don't, except greed.

Chrome better then Safari, Google maps lightyears ahead of maps, Cloud offerings...., even education, creative industry where Apple (future Apple buyers) used to be the biggest player is transitioning to Chromebooks and Surface.... What happened to my beloved company?

Apart from that, Apple is killing it's own ecosystem too. No more displays, routers, servers.

Okay, one thing they excel in compared to the competition: WATCHBANDS

Don't even Apples own employees take notice what's happening? The company has lost his soul. Although I admire their stand on human rights/equality/environment it's no excuse to make those extraordinary big profits and still selling 4 year old hardware as if it was premium and new.

You might want to look up a term called "cognitive dissonance ".

No need to get personal. Let's discuss about facts. If you don't agree I'm open to hear your opinion. That's where these forums are for. Apple isn't a religion.

Title should read "Apple's Planned Obsolescence Said to Force Users Who Want a Working Phone to Upgrade."
Exactly. My 6+ still fits my needs perfectly. Lots of unused storage, battery life is a non-issue (for me), great camera, etc. Others will differ. But the main benefit for this phone now is that it's paid for. And I changed over to the LARGE plan on VZW and have more data GBs than I'll ever use, especially with the 6GB/month freebie bonus they gave me.

But if Apple decides that the launch of the 8 would be a good time to stop supporting the 6+, I might forgo the new phone and go back to Android. I was NOT happy when Apple decided to abandon my iPad3 at IOS9.6.5. And it looks like my mid-2012 rMPB might not be supported for much longer, either, seeing as Apple is saying that some of the 2011s are now end of life.

I know how the business works. But that doesn't mean I'll keep on agreeing to fund Apple's product cycling strategies just to turn installed inventory over every 2 or 3 years.

Seems Apple is producing products customers want. Maybe not everybody likes their direction but their recent quarter indicates people are buying.

I get an entire day with very heavy use on my iPhone 7 Plus. Not sure how others have issues with battery life.

A lot of users seem to use their phones on full or near-full brightness. Every time someone hands me their phone I feel like I need to put on a pair of sunglasses. I keep mine around 25% and my phone usually lasts all day. I couldn't imagine the same being true at 75+%.

And turn bluetooth off when you don't need it, too.

Think if anything galaxy S8 could steal some comp given it has a headphone jack and be a larger display. Hope the iPhone 8 doesn't have 5.1 inch usable screen

Most likely, if you're seeing poor battery life in an older phone it's due to the age of the battery, not overall capacity. My 6 would only function for an hour or so of use before dying, as it had just 40% of the original capacity. That could have been fixed by replacing the battery. Even the advanced batteries in smartphones these days only last about 1000 charging cycles before they begin to diminish.

Strange, I keep hearing about phones losing battery capacity so fast like that.
I have an iphone 4s bought almost when it was released, and only recently I started to feel like it doesn't hold battery like it used to, but the battery still has 1100 mAh from the original 1430 mAh. I'm not sure what's that in percent, but it's still a lot.. after all these years (about 6 years ?).
I also never shut off my phone, and it's fairly used with skype, phone talks for hours, and in the past years for Safari browsing (when I had no alternative). But I don't charge it everyday, like some do, and also has ios 5 on it, maybe that has something to do with it.

Yep! I'm running into the same issues with my mid-2012 MBA. As far as my iPhone I'm in the same boat as you, my phone is fully paid for and AT&T gives a $20 credit on your bill after 2 years. My phone is still fully functional and works great but I'm sure the next major OS install will ruin it. I'm no conspiracy theorist my any means but it's a little too coincidental that they just push out bloatware with around 30 pre-installed apps that wont go away. I'm on the verge of switching to android too.

Ah the ever fluid definition of "bloat". Apple has been working to allow some of them to be deleted, but they actually take up little room in storage.
