Rumor has it that this was/is actually the case. The upcoming OLED iPhone 8 was originally supposed to have released as the iPhone 7 and launch last year. But obviously things didn't workout and we ended up with the controversial iPhone 6SS. If Apple comes out with an iPhone 7S (or iPhone 6SSS) the media is gonna have field day. The hype that the upcoming iPhone 8 (X?) (Pro?) has is insane. No way in hell can Apple risk coming out with yet another dated looking iPhone 6 design as their flagship, when you see the beautiful devices that Samsung has come out with. After having the same design for the last 3 years, you'd think Apple would've had ample time to get the Touch ID/screen thing perfected. Guess we shall find out this fall.

Seems you missed the iPhone 7 sales numbers so I'll share them. They sold more than any previous iPhone. So the huge failure you believe the iPhone 7 to be isn't a failure at all. You simply buy into any little hype MR gives you and believed that Apple really tabled tech for 2 years just because they missed one little deadline. That's simply stupid.

Additionally, he said Apple has evaluated and passed on Synaptics' optical fingerprint solution.
Apple should just pay the licensing fees to Synaptics to use their tech if it works now instead of trying to do everything in house.

Steve: See, I look at this a little bit differently, which is, we’re not trying to do a lot of this stuff because it’s not what we do. We don’t think one company can do everything. So you’ve got to partner with people that are really good at stuff. Like, we’re not, I mean, maybe Microsoft is great at search. We’re not. We’re not trying to be great at search so we partner with people that are great at search. And we don’t know how to do maps on the back end. We know how to do the best maps client in the world, but we don’t know how to do the back end so we partner with people that know how to do the back end. And what we want to do is be that consumer’s device and that consumer’s experience wrapped around all this information and things we can deliver to them in a wonderful user interface, in a coherent product.

LOL, that's pretty pathetic if you would pass on a phone just because you can't make purchases on it at the less then 30% of retails that still carry it. (That number is probably going to shrink as more people/businesses ditch it and write it off as a failure).
Just an FYI, Cash still works everywhere.

Contactless payment such as Apple pay continues to grow quarter over quarter and the use of cash continues to shrink. You're sadly misinformed junior.

Pretty sure members of this forum are far keener on numerology and anniversaries than Apple is.
Okay, I'll play the word game. How about this: I think removing touch ID from any future model, regardless of numerological significance, would be a huge blow to the usability and functionality of the device.

One reason Apple opted for OLED for the new iPhone?

They needed a really thin display technology, with as few layers as possible, to make the new fingerprint sensor technology work properly:

http://www.sonavation.com/sonictouch/

LCD display has too many layers (see image) for a sonic sensor to work reliably. OLED has fewer layers, but it still has layers of different (sonic) properties, making ultrasonic fingerprint reading a challenge.

IMG_3649.JPG

The sonic properties of the display need to be constant for reliable fingerprint reading. Any variances in the display structure have a negative effect on its sonic properties. This means low yields, as manufacturing tolerances need to be incredibly strict. Apple's Force Touch layer probably adds to this structural complexity.

Prototypes would be "easy" to produce, but mass production – where there are always micrometric variances in the display structure between runs and batches, and therefore differences in the sonic properties of the displays – may very well be the challenge Apple has faced, resulting in low yields.

To ensure reliability, it could be that each under-display sonic fingerprint sensor needs to be calibrated individually for accuracy, to account for micrometric variances in the display structure. This would slow down production, again resulting in low yields.

Can Apple overcome the challenge? They most likely already have – however, yields may still be much lower than the yields for their current TouchID sensor, which is a piece of tech separate from the display itself, and easier to manufacture.

Now imagine a scratch or fracture in the display over the new fingerprint sensor: the sonic print would change, rendering the new TouchID inoperable. There's a reason Apple uses saphire even in the current TouchID sensor: it's much more wear-resistant than any Gorilla Glass, keeping fingerprint read accuracy constant & reliable using the current tech.

apple is in the same spot as Samsung with its fingerprint sensor on the back.

they invested in putting the sensor under the screen but could not get it out in time and last minute through it on the back.

it's worse for apple now because the 6,6s,7 is basically the exact same looking phone so apple can't put out a 7s looking the same but can't get the sensor under the screen in time.

it will be 3 years in a row without a phone redesign

it's already been three years 6,6s,7. I think apple is in a different spot then Samsung. yes, they ran into the same issues. The difference is apple still has 5-6 more months before the phone is even launched. I'd be willing to bet a kidney the note 8 coming in august or September will have it embedded into the display.

yes what ment ment is they are more pressured for a new design because the last 3 phones were similar.apple really needs to get the scanner out under the screen because it will be 4 years without a change if they just put out a 7s and wait for the iPhone 8 to get it under the display.

note 8 will most likely get it under the screen but Samsung skipped a note 7 so people won't really complain if it's on the back.

I imagine Tim and Jony doing a Randolf and Mortimer bathroom stall bet in which they let different stories leak to the press just to see which ones take hold. Anybody with even the slightest experience in supply chain management knows that the iPhone "8 or X or whatever" has already had its design finalized and is being prepped for production. Hell, they have already started on designs and feasibility for the iPhone 10. Upgrade cycles might be a yearly process but design teams are already looking 5 years into the future.

I see what your saying. I think that's the reason they will figure it out 5 months is a long time. Maybe i'm just to optimistic:)

Touch ID is a nice feature, but it is by no means essential. I'd much rather have a big, uniform display on my iPhone. As far as missing Apple Pay, that's a minor detail. What so bad about carrying around your VISA card, which you have to do anyway? This is a "big picture" decision, and hopefully Apple will make the right one.

to be honest i started to use apple pay now more and more its so easy so fast u would think the visa is an old technology, i dont think apple will remove the tocuh id , its a major part of people life and they started to use it alot int the last 2 years u can use touch id in many things now , its so important they added to their new computer pro and they will do the same thing to their future products .

This is Apple we're talking about. And three whole years. If they can't advance the design in that way, they should at least have made a greater effort for the 7 and thus 7s.

And that's the point. It's probably incredibly difficult. So difficult in fact that it takes the expertise of Apple 3 years to develop it.

Like, you don't know anything so you're just complaining here.

Asinine...Apple pay doesn't work without Touch ID...iPhone 8 CAN'T ship without it...

What if they say: Apple Pay now supports Facial, starting with the ip8 OLED. Since it's Facial is so great, we went along and removed touchID together with the home button -to safe space or sum. Starting with the ip8 OLED.

I don't get the apparent obsession with getting rid of a tiny amount of front bezel which is actually useful to hold the phone in a way that means you can see the whole display, and also means you can have a satisfying physical button. Especially before they've even removed the long-functionless chin from the iMac.
I agree. The only advantage I can see is fitting a larger display on a smaller device. Sure, that's useful, but I'm not sure if it will be worth the trade-offs. I hope they wait until they've got it right.

Removing TouchID at this point is just dumb; especially on a supposed "high end"/"premium" model, but really its dumb for any of the models. Even more so if they think other biometrics logins will be better. Without a revolutionary, new and accurate biometric to take its place, Apple will be taking a huge step backwards.

I don't believe Apple will remove TouchID for a very long time. Someone's just churning the rumor mill.

I do know that I'm not the only one complaining. I know Apple will deliver, but I believe it will be delayed at least until October.

Yeah right, like Apple are going to BACKTRACK and not include Touch ID...

The "news" becomes more farcical with each passing hour. Do you not think they have MULTIPLE prototype options - where do people come up with this bollocks?

Oh hang on, it's an "analyst" - that's where, so can safely be laughed to scorn and ignored completely.
