There’s definitely a larger shipment going to the stores, since they’re showing pickup availability on the 19th, while online orders are showing shipment dates around the 25th. For example, I placed my order right at launch—I got the confirmation email from Apple at 5:01 AM—and still ended up with a delivery date of the 25th.

It seems pretty clear that Apple anticipated limited stock on the iPhone Pro Max, especially in Orange, and reserved more units for in-store pickup. My guess is they’re doing this to drive people into the stores, since once you’re there, you’re more likely to buy accessories like cases, chargers, or AppleCare.

What doesn’t make sense is why they wouldn’t fulfill online launch-day deliveries on the 19th. Apple has updated shipping windows in the past after adjusting inventory, so I’m hoping they’ll do the same here.
I know it seems that way but you have to keep in mind a few things.
  1. There aren't that many Apple Stores. This means that the total number allocated to the stores vs. shipped is very small.
  2. Apple has to plan ahead of time for logistical reasons how much stock to allocate to a crazy amount of pools.
    1. Apple Stores
    2. U.S. carrier stores
    3. Carrier stores in all launch day countries
    4. Retail outlets like Best Buy, Walmart etc.
    5. Online orders
    6. Online orders for all of the above other stores
It is unbelievable how many different places they have to plan for when they are creating this plan for day one availability. The list above is only scratching the surface.

I find it bizarre that the store pickup option was so limited… my local store never was available and the closest flag shows up for a color I don’t want? Are they scaling back store pickups this year? It’s never been a problem in the past.

I originally ordered 1 minute after opening, received email confirmation 2 minutes after opening. Used Apple Store app, and did the pre-pre-order several days ago. Blue 2TB 17PM. Originally had a 9/25 delivery date (and I see LOTS of similar comments on multiple threads). I just refreshed the status of the order, and it is now indicating a 19th delivery date. It appears they have "fixed the glitch" whatever was causing it.

Same thing happens like everyone here. Had preorder ready to go, and was completed at 08:01 (est) and got the 24 sept. Just got email stating my date has changed to 19 sept. Glad they got this fixed.

So far, no change yet - ordered at 7:05A, not an IUP order. Was for a 17 Pro max 1TB in Silver, still shows 9/25 at the moment at least.

Hi! Anyone here with T-Mobile? I have a few questions about pre-ordering through Apple and could use some help here? Thanks!

Update- now changed from 9/25 to 9/19. (17 Pro 1TB orange).

It's nearly always the case, in my experience since original iPhone, that Apple almost always underestimates initial delivery speed. I have never had it take as long as they initially estimate, with perhaps one exception.

Clearly, they understand buyer psychology very well- delivering earlier than initially promised tends to make the buyer feel much better than finding it might be later.

AWU3 and APP3 arriving that same day, too.
