Apple Unveils iPhone Air: So Light, You’ll Think You Lost It

Cupertino, California — Apple today introduced iPhone Air 2, the world’s first smartphone so light, so thin, and so advanced that it has literally transcended the visible spectrum.

“People told us we couldn’t make a phone thinner,” said Tim Cook, CEO of Apple. “So we made one you can’t see at all. It’s our most innovative absence yet.”

iPhone Air weighs 0.0001 grams, measures 0.0mm thin, and is crafted from a revolutionary new material Apple calls Vantaclear, a fusion of nothing and the concept of minimalism. It features an invisible edge-to-edge display that you’ll swear is there if you just squint hard enough.

Users can unlock iPhone Air using Face ID Quantum, which works by recognizing your aura. The device is powered by the A19 ZeroChip, a processor so efficient it draws power from pure confidence.

“iPhone Air isn’t just light,” said Jony Ive (from wherever Jony Ive is now). “It’s enlightened.”

Customers can preorder iPhone Air starting today for $1,699 (or $2,199 for the Pro Nothing model), including a complimentary empty box and biodegradable documentation to remind you you’ve bought something profound.

Apple Stores will begin carrying iPhone Air on November 31, 2026 — though you won’t see it, feel it, or hear it. You’ll just know.
Thanks for your contribution ChatGPT, when I visit MacRumors I love to read some AI slop as well, don't have that enough during my regular day.

Anyway ontopic, it seems like tech fanatics really like it but the regular folk don't. A bit like what happened with the minis.

Either eliminate the Air and make the iPhone line up consisting of 4 models -- iPhone SE / e, regular iPhone, iPhone Pro, and iPhone Pro Max -- or keep the Air for another year and then bring back the iPhone mini the following year. Keep the iPhone mini for 2 years (like with 12 mini and 13 mini), then replace it with an iPhone Plus for the next 2 years followed by the iPhone Air for the next 2 years. Rinse, repeat.

This will give those interested in an iPhone mini, Plus, and Air something they want.

I mean, we're basically in a recession if you remove AI spending. Those who have money are going to go with the iPhone Pro for $100 more. It's way more capable with a bigger battery and advanced camera system. Everyone else is going to go with a cheaper model. The base iPhone this year is actually quite capable for the price, and the SE is a solid device now. Perhaps in a stronger economy this device would do better, but for now people want the best bang for their buck, and the iPhone Air isn't it. It has some cool tech, but most people don't care.

What they really need to bring back is the iPhone mini. My wife has been waiting a long time to upgrade her iPhone 13 mini. I know it wasn't the most popular, but there would probably be a surge in demand since many people have been waiting. My aunt is also waiting for a new one, and she's on the 12 mini. And even so, it would probably be more popular than the Air. They don't need to bring out a new mini every year, but every 2-3 years would be nice for those who love it! And for those who are tiny or otherwise refuse to use a big phone.
yes to the mini good ser

Oh no, what will Apple do?

Give me a break. In other words, they are going to have higher average selling prices because so many more Pros will be sold.

Who cares.

Just shows Apple management don't have a scooby.

Apple Car, Vision Pro, Apple Intelligence, iPhone Air... the list goes on.

I disagree about the higher than average selling prices. The regular 17s are still sold out, that's where the moneys going, on cheaper iPhones.

And yes the stock goes up. But not sure that's linked to any actual fundementals anymore

Another Apple flop, after the Vision Pro...

Too many swings and misses from a once great company
Unfortunately this is what is expected from a publicly traded company at the size of Apple.

GROWTH MUST HAPOEN ALWAYS!!!!

GROWTH IS TOO LOW!!!

The price is the problem. Its a nice phone in a bubble, but the price is too much considering how much of a downgrade it is from the Pro that is $100 more.
Yeah, I bought one, only reason, the 17 wasn't available to order and Amazon priced it at 999€ instead of 1199€. I thought, who cares, batterie about the same as the 17, don't care much about cameras, so I bought it. Since I don't do much with my phone except using it as an iPod and a phone, batterie is fine. It's just too large. Man, it's really a beautiful device.

I'd be willing to bet that the iPhone Plus sold worse than the iPhone Mini — anecdotally, I haven't seen a single Plus in the wild, and nobody seems to miss it in the lineup; meanwhile Mini users are still carrying on about how much they want the form factor back. (yeah, including me)

If it's true that the Air is selling worse than the Plus, that suggests that every one of these form factor experiments has sold worst than the last. Kinda wild.

If true, this is a marketing failure. Apple has done nothing to combat erroneous propaganda. The Wall Street Journal published an article with a single anecdote about a guy who returned his iPhone Air because he said the Pro takes better photos. The Air and Pro have the same main camera with the Air having an edge for close ups. If the guy complained about not having telephoto or wide angle lenses, that would be a different story. But he only mentioned photo quality (it's possible the journalist mischaracterized the guy's complaints). Most people never use the other cameras even though they might be pressured by a salesperson into thinking they need multiple cameras.

This is according to 9to5mac's report:

"The second-generation iPhone Air was initially set to launch next fall alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone Fold. According to The Information, the device was planned to be even lighter than the current iPhone Air and have a larger battery capacity.

Apple was also working on bringing the vapor chamber cooling system that first debuted on the iPhone 17 Pro to the iPhone Air 2. A separate supply chain rumor last week said the iPhone Air 2 may have also had two cameras.
"

"It’s possible the product is undergoing a significant redesign, and one person said Apple could still release the second-generation iPhone Air as soon as spring 2027 alongside the standard iPhone 18 and budget-friendly 18e"

If true, and Apple was going to fix all the shortcomings of the first iPhone Air, they should go ahead and release it.
Perhaps they need until the spring of 2027 to truly improve the hardware.

I really like my Air, with the primary compromise being the single camera. An Air with a second camera would be ideal for me. Battery life has been workable for me and I really like the lightness in my pocket. One thing not talked about too much is the screen size - I enjoy having it straddling the pro and pro max.

It's too expensive for what it provides. Super thin is not that important when the device is already very small to begin with. The Air should be the cheapest phone they provide. With the other iphones providing better cameras, more battery for more money.

Love my Air, have zero issues with the sacrifices. And I came from a 15 Pro Max. The thinness and build quality is worth the one camera (which btw takes amazing photos and some I feel are even better than my Pro Max looked), I always use AirPods so the single speaker is a zero deal breaker. And I'm a medium to heavy user based on the day and I can go from 5am to 10pm easily with still around 20% left (On iOS 26.1, the original 26 was pushing the battery life but 26.1 really fixed it).

I think the Air is just misunderstood, it's the future now, meaning it's more of a test product with a niche audience. It's for those who want the thinness of tomorrow but need to understand the tech is not fully there yet. Most users can get away with the Air if they really wanted to. Just like the MacBook Air or iPad Air. And yes the normal 17 does have more features, but that is why they put the Pro chip in the Air, because they knew it had to make thins sacrifices.

And people say they could've done 2 cameras, I for one think it's better they didn't because with the amount of heat (especially during an update) that comes from that entire bar, I think they left space in there on purpose so wires and little stuff didn't fry.

Doesn't really matter. Clearly the Air was an engineering trial for the upcoming folding iPhone. The R&D was already going to be spent on the Fold, so why not test the waters with a thin model? Personally I'm very happy with mine. When I hold another iPhone it feels like a brick.
