I mean, have they not internalized the lesson learned from the post-Ive era that form limiting function isn't a product that consumers desire? How much more critical praise have Apple products gotten since he left and the butterfly keyboard's demise, the return of ports, more buttons, etc., etc., etc., was needed to drive it in their heads? The Air's compromises kinda make it seem like that never sunk in.

Bring the Mini back! I have 12 people including myself in my family on the 12 and 13 mini, we all need an upgrade. Thanks

P.S. three of us have two devices, so a total of 15 devices...

And I am constantly asked by people in meetings, in bars or when mountain biking, why I am on a small phone and how long the battery lasts and how nice it looks.

Best iPhone they made in years. Shame. Apple does nothing to market it same with the vision pro.
It’s a phone that’s meant to be seen in-person to feel the thinness and weight. I guess even those going to the stores to collect their iPhone 17 P/PM were not convinced.

They can't just add a 2nd camera folks.
Have a look at the breakaway schematics or tear down images.

There's nowhere to put it.

It'd be a total redesign and you'd end up with: an iPhone 17
Erm.. Have you seen Samsung S25 Edge? :)

What I actually dont understand is, why would Apple continue with the old battery technology, while the solid-state batteries are readily available and Air is exactly where it should've been used at..

Apple cares.

Anyhow I'm not sure if people passing on the Air are predominantly going for the Pro. It seems anecdotally a ton of people are getting the iPhone 17 instead. Better battery life, more cameras, and way cheaper.
The Pros are still around 75% of sales:

Of course the iPhone Air sales are so bad, what was Apple even thinking?.. Wake me up when they put a solid state battery with 30-40% more battery life and 3 decent cameras instead of 1...
It's absolutely not about the camera or battery, just as it was never about Pro Motion in the basic iPhones. Think about it, kids. The battery is better than the iPhone 16 Pro or the basic 17, so the battery isn't a problem. Normal people don't even know what ultra wide is or, as I wrote, Pro Motion. Normies need to sell it. Apple didn't sell it, didn't advertise it, instead it sold the Pro.

That's why I said it'd be a total redesign 😉

They can't just put one right next to the existing one in the current Air design.

It's not a marketing thing when folks are going into stores and choosing the alternatives right next to it.

No, it wouldn't sell. Just like the mini, plus, or Air. iPhone users are simply used to the Pro and base models. The only option is to ditch the base model and replace it with the Air.

What happened to innovation? Look at the variety of implementations of the iPod concept ... why can't some innovation be brought to the iPhone? The current offerings are so boring. For example, what about an iPhone version of the iPod Shuffle? !!! (Think about it carefully ... make you think about future UIs?)

This news implies that Apple would not be addressing the two key issues for the next iteration: Battery Life, Camera
The battery might be insurmountable given the size (hence the need for the fold), but there is plenty of room in the plateau for a zoom lens.

A new 5.4 inch mini coming in at <100g and 2 day battery life would sell like hotcakes. But that's too much innovation for lazy Apple.

this!
Small like the mini 13, but a little thicker.
CNC Aluminium like the 17 pro.
And maybe just for me: top specd with faceid, 2-3 lenses, rugged.

It's like the macbook 12, you want real work done, buy a pro, you don't need the horsepower, you can buy the macbook 12, or as in phones, you can buy the air, just look for discounts.

I’m a fan of the air. I wouldn’t go as far as to call it style without substance. If you watch any videos I’ve taken with it, they all look more than adequate. The single speaker isn’t a deal breaker for watching videos, although of course it is a compromise and could be better. The battery life is acceptable. I wouldn’t call it downright bad but it is noticeably worse than my previous pro. But altogether I’m super happy with the device and love the thin and light form factor. Also it has the pro chip and 12GB RAM, and it can edit videos just fine. It probably edits video better than the 16 Pro. If this thing beats the 16 Pro, save for comparisons with the 17 Pro it’s hard to call this thing much of a compromise in real world use.
