The same for me, I have 7 days of return window left, but Air is so great device, that I don't want to return or even buy another iPhone from 17 lineup. Ask her maybe to listen some music on max volume, that you have issue on with ear close to speaker?
Ya i love the air, i wanna get the same thing again haha. I will, theres this song that recreates it every time for me (sunroof - nicky youre) when on max volume. I never listen to music on max just on my phone so i dont care much, but the worst is just regular facetime call at 55-60% volume crackling. I also fear if its a hardware issue that itll get worst over time

Do most people talk on Facetime or listen to music/play games on their iPhones using the built-in speakers most of time?
I think no, but when I'm at home it's not a bad thing to watch YouTube or play games using speakers. Mono speaker is ok for me on Air, but those distortion issues on volume higher than 60% I think isn't a good thing for an Apple device

I asked to play on maximum volume just to test issue. Myself I'm not listening music on max volume too

Not until they learned it was something they could complain about, no.
is it complaining if trying to figure out if my 1000 new phone has hardware issues and i should take it back? Speakers degrade and if its already a problem, i dont want to be completly shot in a few months/a year

Not necessarily, though I’d imagine any speaker will degrade over time if you’re constantly playing something at max volume. Not an audiophile, just not familiar with the concept of maxing out my phone’s volume for music vs just using headphones or a BT speaker/carplay.

I know and i dont, but my 3 yo ipad doesnt do this on max volume, none of my other phones did either. But anyway the annoying thing is facetime calls crackle at 50-60% volume, doesnt feel normal

I use the built-in speakers all the time (every day on a number of calls). I will listen to music on the built-in speakers rarely, as I usually use the iPad or MBP for that, but it's still nice to have satisfactory speakers.

The motivation that people have defending the Air is really something. What is happening now is what many of us ("haters") expected would happen, and that is people coming to realize one or more of the drawbacks of the Air and not willing to compromise for a thousand dollar phone.

These snarky replies are hilarious. You have direct accounts of a long line of people, forum members, returning their Airs because the compromises are a bit much for them (as was always going to be the case, because common sense), and you can't help but post smartass replies like this. These are not assumptions / optimism / skepticism, these are people who have these phones in their hands, they are using them and many are returning them.

If all of us who were doubting the value of the Air were labeled haters before the phone was out in the wild, what do we call this - people who cannot come to terms with the fact that no, the Air is not in fact the end all be all because it has too many compromises (which was evident from the start)?

I’ve not experienced crackling at levels that low, but maxed out, mine certainly loses its clarity the couple times I’ve tested it.

oh well im still gonna exchange for another air cause i really like it. I just dont want to have a defective unit.

Is speaker crackle on the Air normal or signs of a defective unit?

All of my iPhones: 6S, OGSE, 8, 12 Mini and 13 do not suffer from this issue at max volume.

My 8’s earphone speaker did crackle after 2 years however I took it into a repair shop, had the unit opened and the earphone cleaned, and it began working again like it was brand new.

In my experience, all my Apple devices appear finely tuned to not have any distortions at the highest volume.

Same for me for all apple devices I owned. Maybe Apple pushed too much power to speaker in the firmware or some frequencies should be tuned to speaker not to crackle

Mine doesn't crackle. I have used it for daily Teams meetings for hours at a time and all at max volume.

No issues.

In fact, it's a bit louder than my iPad Mini 6 for phone calls.

Granted, some ringtones I have found are indeed less loud. I only go for the higher-pitched ones now. Those sound much louder.

Can confirm the speaker debacle is overblown. Sounds perfectly fine - loudness even surprised me.

Have I heard better? Yeah absolutely, out of home stereo setups and over ear / in ear headphones. Heck, the Air speaker sounds better than my iPad Mini (though, admittedly, those speakers are pretty ass).
It is for sound quality, but its not for people who have defective units. Im exchanging mine tomorrow for another air

Huh. I guess I've almost always chosen to use headphones or just mute it.

The only people I ever see using speakerphone in public are the ones who don't seem to understand how annoying it is to have to hear someone else's conversation in a small, enclosed space.
in public? who says? cant use the phones speaker when im on a facetime call sitting next to somebody in my own house?

Try removing the screen protector ?

Since the speaker sound comes from the entire screen acting as the speaker, might be the screen protector that is on top ?
Where does this come from? The sound comes from the earpiece, otherwise it wouldn’t sound imbalance when the phone is in landscape.

I used FaceTime yesterday and it sounded fine. I wasn't maybe on Max volume but in my condo with the AC on it was not really a big deal. Did not notice anything off about it in terms of volume or quality.

I agree with the sentiment that once reviewers (before they even had the unit in their hands) started talking about how bad its going to be to have one speaker, everyone who got one who is really into tech is LISTENING FOR it to be bad.

Anyone who knows basic psychology knows that if you make someone expect something, they are more likely to see it. Even to the point of bending facts to support their preconceived belief. It's called confirmation bias.

And YouTubers need clickbait and shocking titles to get views, so trashing the phone over speakers and having "weak battery" (when in reality it closely matches the base iPhone and last years entire line up (minus the plus size phones) was the way to get it.

Multiply that by 100 review websites and YouTube videos, and anyone who did any basic research on the Air would have been VERY PRIMED to believe them and therefore, find these issues in their device.

I agree with you about tech youtubers, they havent been reliable in years. Havent watched em for a long time, i make up my own mind. Doesnt mean defects cant exist and I still have issues with my air's speaker, going to exchange it for another air tomorrow
