Try removing the screen protector ?

Since the speaker sound comes from the entire screen acting as the speaker, might be the screen protector that is on top ?

The sound doesn’t come from the entire screen. It comes from the earpiece.

Watching the JerryRig teardown and it seems the speaker sits under where the flash is, taking up almost the same amount of room as a camera. It's also full of tiny balls.

I used FaceTime yesterday and it sounded fine. I wasn't maybe on Max volume but in my condo with the AC on it was not really a big deal. Did not notice anything off about it in terms of volume or quality.

I agree with the sentiment that once reviewers (before they even had the unit in their hands) started talking about how bad its going to be to have one speaker, everyone who got one who is really into tech is LISTENING FOR it to be bad.

Anyone who knows basic psychology knows that if you make someone expect something, they are more likely to see it. Even to the point of bending facts to support their preconceived belief. It's called confirmation bias.

And YouTubers need clickbait and shocking titles to get views, so trashing the phone over speakers and having "weak battery" (when in reality it closely matches the base iPhone and last years entire line up (minus the plus size phones) was the way to get it.

Multiply that by 100 review websites and YouTube videos, and anyone who did any basic research on the Air would have been VERY PRIMED to believe them and therefore, find these issues in their device.

Nah, this is just a hardware deficit that many people are willing to overlook, including myself. Some people cope by telling themselves and other people what they need to. Having done some (admittedly) obsessive A / B testing with the Air vs other smartphones, the Air’s audio is “good enough” but it’s still at the bottom of the barrel.

Hopefully, this dude that’s going to replace his phone will convince himself the replacement is better, so he can just enjoy the phone. Or he’ll get another phone and start talking mad trash about the Air lol.

Where does this come from? The sound comes from the earpiece, otherwise it wouldn’t sound imbalance when the phone is in landscape.
Perhaps the screen protector was poorly made and covering the earpiece area ?

Mine does not have a screen protector and the sound is perfect - all the way up to max volume listening to country singer Post Malone..

It could also be a poorly designed case blocking some of the speaker. I believe the ringke onyx was doing that on mine. My volume got louder and clearer (was pretty clear before) after I changed and tried a new case.

Same here, most phones get distorted on max volume, not the air, it's perfectly fine.

Ya she said hers was fine
I spoken with a bunch of guys from other forum, all of them confirm, that speaker is crackling from time to time. Some guy said that it starting from 50-60, other from 80, but it’s a confirmed occasion. All who said that it’s not crackling maybe have something with hearing acuity or just not paying so much attention to it

Or maybe the ones hearing crackling have hearing issues? My Air does not crackle. Not even slightly.

What are the odds, that almost 80-90% of Airs, that Apple sold around the world have a defective speaker? Because 2 devices that I tested in shops are defective, guys from US and EU confirm that their new phone have a crackling issue on this and other forums and even devices, that they tried to test in their local tech shops have the same issue. 4 big channels on YouTube also said, that speaker start to crackle on some volume settings. Seems to me, that all of them are affected and it can be a big lawsuit against Apple. I can give a link to YouTube, from such affected device, maybe you heard the same, but didn’t paid much attention.

There were some weird Xiaomi phones that had a weird piezoelectric thing under the display to use it as a speaker. Some Sony TVs also have weird speaker-panels. It's not unheard of.

Would certainly be an innovative idea for a thin device. The speaker on the Air however is housed under the flash in the ‘plateau’ and emits sound through the earpiece

Oh no, on paper it looks innovative but in practice it sounded awful. Quiet and tinny. There's a reason these companies pivoted away from that and Apple never bothered in the first place.

Yes correct, my Sony 65" OLED TV has the built in Acoustic Surface Audio which does not need a speaker bar.

My Air does the same thing - sounds appear to be coming from the front display surface - not the edges.

Funny thing: the same issue was on iPhone X and 8, 8 years ago. Apple fixed it in a software update later. I also bought an iPhone X in 2017 after the start of the sales in EU and actually never encountered any issues with the speaker.

What are the odds that 10-20% of Airs have a perfect speaker? Goes the same way. How do you know the percentage? You think every iPhone user gets on this website and post their experience?

Maybe not 90%, but most of them, because I have never seen so many negative reviews about iPhone speaker crackling in their entire history
