For people that have trouble with WiFi, it might be an issue with your router. My Netgear router does both 802.11G and 802.11N and can use WPA (TKIP) and WPA2 (AES) simultaneously. I found that using only WPA2 (AES) will get better response from the iPod touch. It connects faster and doesn't drop the signal.

Magnification is a new feature for visual impaired users. You most likely turned it on. Go into settings - general - accessibility and turn magnification off. However a restore should have fixed this, maybe you do have a problem
 
a bug/annoyance i have found; When writing a long SMS the area in which you type grows and continues to grow until you cannot scroll up to read previous messages. I cannot remember if it was like this in previous versions (i hadn't used it since January) but i don't remember it! Has anyone else noticed this?
This seems to effect both landscape and portrait phones. See the image below.


 
I have had a problem when in Safari and I start typing a message as in MacRumors reply and after the keyboard shows if you try and switch to landscape mode it will not. I had to cancel the typing / keyboard then switch to landscape mode and continue.
 
Does anyone have an issue with Contacts.app in landscape mode? On mine, it shows every other letter (on the side) as a dot. Anyone too?

This was like this in 2.2.1 also. When your keyboard is out, you cannot switch to landscape mode.
 
I decided to do a fresh install when the new 3.0 software arrived, just to start over. I have never had so many blunt shutdowns, or applications freezing, since 3.0

Now on the regular my iphone freezes at least twice a week, and occasionally just switches itself off all together.

OK so please don't think I am a simpleton, but I can't get call waiting to work on my 3Gs! What's wrong with me?? The button that says "hold and take call" is greyed out when the second call comes in; the only option I can use is "hang up and take call" (pardon the paraphrase of what the buttons actually say, I don't remember exact wording).

Anyone else had a problem with that? I am sure a solution is super simple and I am just overlooking it. Help?

Try these things:

1. Turn the phone off
2. Make sure that it is enabled under settings
3. Take a look at this thread: http://www.everythingicafe.com/forum/iphone-3g/call-waiting-on-3g-iphone-42669.html
4. Call your carrier and ask what is wrong or go to Apple and ask what is wrong

Yeah... I've done that - the function is enabled, and I've always had call waiting, so it's not a function of the plan (in fact, they didn't change the plan at all when I got the iPhone, just added the data to the voice plan I already had). When I am on the phone, I hear the second call coming in, but can't switch to answer it because that "hold and answer" button is greyed out. That post you gave was informative but not exactly what's going on with me. I will stop in the AT&T store (because the bastards "forgot" to give me my apple stickers, the nerve!), and will try to resolve and report back what they say, in case someone else has a similar issue.

I have an issue, don't know if 3.0 is to blame though.

Since the first time I turned on my new iPhone 3GS, the red dot indicating a voicemail has been on. My voicemail inbox is empty, there aren't even any saved messages. How can I get rid of it?
 
Music Controls

In 3.0, is there a way to bring up the music controls even when music is NOT playing like it was in previous firmwares?

This does not seem like an issue with 3.0, but rather with the phone or you provider. I would start by calling your provider, then contacting Apple.

I believe you must have iPod Controls enabled under "SETTINGS"
 
iPhone 2G issue

I have a 2G that I recently fixed myself (shattered screen - I'm so proud of myself! Fixing it that is!) and want to give to my kids as a high end touch, i.e. no sim card. Can I upgrade to 3.0 without violating Apple's precious service agreement. Thanks.

I had that as well - it's quite annoying. It went away after I restarted the phone. Which brings me to another issue - 3GS stopped responding twice since I got it (3 weeks I guess? I got it the day of the launch). I called 1800 my-iphone, and complained; the woman told me it shouldn't happen and offered to make a genius appointment to have them run a diagnostic test. I don't have an appointment, but plan to be in the mall tomorrow, so I will drop in and ask that question (about crashing), as well as a few others. Will report back. 🙂

There are three settings for the double tap home function: Home, Search, and iPod. Even if music controls on, they can only be activated if music is ALREADY playing. If music is not playing, then double tapping home either goes to spotlight, the home screen, or the actual iPod app. So there is no way to get the controls if music is not playing.

Do you mean getting it for free? No, it would be against the rules, EULA's and the law.

I can live with paying the $9.95.

I did d/l 3.0 last night without the SIM card installed and it seems to work ok. Apple didn't mention a cost, so I'll play the wait and see game. After the 2G broke, I went and upgraded to the 3G. Didn't realize last year how easy it was to replace the glass. Had I known that at the time, I'd still be using my 2G and saving $10 a month for the service.

OK - reporting back. Issues: call waiting button "hold and take call" was greyed out; phone crashed (froze) a couple of times; voicemail annoyingly showed "1" even though there were no voicemails to listen to.

Showed up at the store yesterday without an appointment. An obviously unsatisfied with her own appearance greeter in an orange shirt told me very kindly that the issues sound like a whole lot might be wrong with my phone and without an appointment I really am completely on my own since there is absolutely no way anyone can give me any attention today. I thanked her and proceeded inside the store, iPhone in a bright green case in hand. I was promptly noticed and approached by a tech in a blue shirt who clearly has appreciation for pretty ladies. 😀 He promptly adjusted settings on my phone back and forth a few times, and tested the call waiting feature, which immediately fixed itself without the dreaded appointment. Regarding the crashing a couple of times (freezing, really) and the voicemail button, he said that it sometimes happens and restarting the phone is not a big deal - and if those are the only issues I have, I probably have a great device where the apps compete for my attention 😀. He said (and that's what a person on the phone had said, too, when I called 1800 MY IPHONE) that iPhones are really like small computers and sometimes freezing happens... because the way he said it sounded very much like the person on the phone support, I am convinced that it's a standard line Apple coaches their techs to say when people come to them with crashing complaints. Be that as it may, he alleviated my concerns, gave me a couple of Apple stickers and told me that if I don't trip the water sensor, my device is covered for a year by the warranty, and I can buy Applecare for the 2nd year any time I choose within the first year of being a proud owner of my iPhone.
