When I'm Czar of the World, I'm going to get rid of this "99" marketing trick. I get it, it's "not ten dollars", sheesh. You're not fooling anyone.

I'd ask you all to vote for me to be Czar of the World, but as you know, you don't vote for czars, you obey them.

I'd obey that.

...Who in the world would make an app that's 2 GB in size? Unless Adobe plans on bringing the full Creative Suite 3 Master Collection to the iPhone! :p

O.T.

Hmm, Adobe? That would be more like 2GB per app, installed from 8 DVDs, excluding the tutorial on how to use the "Save for Web" function... ;)

Plus, they would have to provide a Flash emulation of the Flash Player for iPhone, so that would be more like 9 DVDs... ;)

Sorry, slow afternoon...

By the way, I would vote for the Czar! ;)

2 GB app size limit? What the?? I think Apple should lower that quite a bit. To me, any app for iPhone/iPod touch that was over 200 MBs would be considerably too large (and I don't own either one!)

GPS software with maps could be big. Perhaps not 2GB big, but few hundred MBs at least.

Eh, $9.99 is a little steep. $4.99 is better, because really it's on a 3.5" screen.

Yeah a Wii game is $9.99 - but, my Wii is on a 1080p 60" plasma not a 3.5" 320x240 LCD.

$4.99 is better.

The iPhone has a 480x320 resolution.
The Wii has a resolution around 866x480 at the most, so your plasma is upscaling it and it probably looks a bit crap.

It's also all about the depth of the game anyway. Bejewelled might be $2.99, but Super Monkey Ball for $10 is a bargain compared to the Wii price.

It is NOT a tradition - it is TAX. That is the reason behind the 9/10th of a cent.
Six and a half-dozen of the other...whatever

Anyhow...raise the "tax" 1/10 cent and feed it into the public schools, or veterans benefits, or health care...just stop trying to trick me into believing your gallon is a cent cheaper than it is! I'm onto you gas stations of America!

BTW...I think the "tax" explanation is a misconception rooted in history, but is now just a tradition...one of many easy to find explanations

Not uncommon for medical software packages (usually a multiuser type of price)

Could you refer to some?

I mean if you talk about balancing/accounting/recording patient data, I will give you that. But a lot of medical software is open source.

I don't know, whether I have very expensive DICOM-software on the Windows machine connected to my DCR-System. It was included in the package with the system. But I just use OsiriX to view those X-rays on my Macs at work. Works like a charm...

And actually I tend to believe, that MIMvista 'borrowed' a lot of their OS X code from Osirix. They only have Windows versions of their software, so I wonder, where they keep their X-Code files (and why they haven't offered any of their products for the Mac platform for some time)!

I wonder how many games will we see worth the $10. Once you get over $5 the games need to have more depth than your typical popcap game. Look at games on the DS for examples of good ones.

I agree. $9.99 is fine for the professionally developed games, ie Sega and monkeyball.

I am concerned that every Tom, Dick and Chester is going to also want to charge $9.99 for their incomplete game or game concept.

Nothing has been said about the customers ability to get a refund if a game really sucks.

Personally I can't wait for the first iPhone MMORPG. I would pay $100 for that.

I've forgotten where I read it but apparently devs have been encouraged to provide two versions, one trial and one full.

Cromag rally doesn't look like its worth $9.99 to me, I have to say.

perhaps a limit of 2gb would allow a full downloaded map for SatNav?

Yeah Tomtom maps for North America is only 835MB... Tomtom is great 'cos it will work without an internet connection.

3.53GB for all the worlds maps :-(

Really? I'm all for cheaper apps, but you do realise the iPhone is bigger, screen-wise than both the DS and the PSP, right? I guess the smaller your screen gets, the more fair $30-60 games are...

Its not just the screen, its the graphics. Sure a gameboy pocket might have a similar size screen, but who gives a toss?

Personally i'm waiting for a port of gnuboy or snes9x to iphone. Now THAT would make me buy it.

Someone remind me of the graphics capability on the iphone, please?

Pricing

Its a stupid question, and i know its just a minimum and maximum, but what app is to cost £500 ($999.99) !!

The current consensus on B3D is it can do at least Dreamcast level graphics. I would say that would put it on par with the PSP (more advanced than the DS). Of course this depends on if you think the Dreamcast was more powerful than the PS2.

That is not exactly true and it is not rooted in tradition directly. The real problem in America is not the extra 1/10th of a cent going to other programs as that will never be enough given the current model of government. Spend, spend and spend - regardless of the costs.

I want a new MacBook Pro. I COULD put it on my charge card and pay for it over time - but then I am in debt. I make do with what I have and I am content. The government is NOT that way. They spend on the backs of my children with no regard for the future.

It will come back to bite us in the ass...and that is NOT in our interest.

D

Off topic debates aside...

This is fine as I thought the cheapest apps might be $.99, I was just hoping to have some $.50 apps.

This whole pricing thing is a little sketchy. I think that there will be no problem finding quality, free programs on the app store, which will provide some stiff competition for the $9.99 programs.
