In this case the government is delegating responsibility to you. It's Apple that is trying to act as a government.
I paid someone to take that responsibility from me. Just like I do every time I spend money. I don't want to have to waste my time researching apps.

I also hate how today's Apple fans want a big corporation to nanny and coddle them instead of taking responsibility for what they install on their own devices. In my day Apple fans were a lot better than that.
Are you talking about the 1B+ iPhone users?

There will be problems like in the Android world. Millions of people are losing their bank accounts because thieves trick them into installing counterfeit apps.

My wife has been using Android since the beginning, is not tech savvy, and has never installed an app outside of the Play store. My parents use Androids, they have never installed a 3rd party app outside of the Play store.

I'd be surprised if more than 10% of all Android users have ever installed anything outside of the official stores.

I find it interesting that people here talk about how warez and spyware proliferate on Android, do not know what they are talking about.

I happen to use Android, iOS, MacOS, Linux and Windows. There is nothing inherently compromised on Android. Even with side loading, unless you install something that is nefarious, there are no added risks.

Google will sniff all apps on your phone and tell you if something, even side loaded, has the potential to compromise your phone.

Side loading is a non-issue on Android.
Android is Linux with a skin.
iOS is BSD with a skin.

Both are inherently secure with different layers of permissions for execution and files.

A sideloaded app has no more potential to steal information than any other app on Android because all apps are sandboxed and can't see the cache and data of another app.

Currently add blockers that use a VPN type structure are banned on Android and Apple app stores But I can side load that in my Android and literally block adds where I see fit and add whitelists for apps and sites. If for nothing else, the ability to block adds makes side loading worth it.

I will never buy an iPhone for my own use until I can side load.

I wonder how this will be managed?

Through user account region or IP range allowlist or geolocation or something else? imagine if all I need to do is log in with an EU account or change to an EU VPN server!
Log in with a VPN and turn off the GPS receiver. Apple maps and Google maps will stop working all so that your game company can save a 30% fee. Why would you care about that?

So you want a pan-national government to do the nannying and coddling instead by denying people the right of choosing what system they can buy into.
Where did I say anything about government doing anything??? I don’t want anyone coddling me. No big company. No government. Get out of my business and let me develop and install whatever apps I want. It’s not Apple’s business or any government's business what I do on my device, nor should it be their right to limit me.

And if I install some malware….that’s on me! People have completely lost the ability to take responsibility for themselves. Watching Apple fans twist themselves into knots over side loading and the illusion of “safety” and “privacy” has become embarrassing.

Apple fans are insanely ignorant of how other platforms work. They spew nonsense all day long about Android and Windows.

I think we'll more likely see app developers offering their apps through multiple sources including Apple’s App Store. Only if they determine that alternative options work much better for them might some pull out of the App Store. The added competition could encourage Apple to make their App Store more appealing to users and developers.
And alternative app stores could be similar to the dark web. The users are not going to know.

I don’t want the government messing in my proprietary ip. Get the heck out of my requirements and let the users vote with their wallets like it’s been done through the ages.

I am a German. I don’t like the EU constantly telling private businesses what to do.

If people don’t like how apple handles this they should buy an android or whatever else or the EU can come up with their own phone (lol).

20% of global revenue, what a joke.
Netherlands here. EU scks. Do they decide the rules of an app store and the next charging port a phone gets? Maybe they should get out of their office and walk around in their cities... there's more important things to do.
Don't like it, don't use / develop for it.

People angry that Apple won’t make as much money. Poor Apple!

You are rejecting freedom just so a multi-trillion dollar company can make money.

This is a win for everyone unless you’re a hardcore fanboy or shareholder.

Android, Windows, and MacOS have “side loading” so it’s not as scary and dangerous as Apple would like you to believe. If you believe their lies then stay in your little walled garden safe space and Apple will hold your hand.
You speak of freedom… I don’t think freedom means what you think it means.

For a lot of people, freedom means that they get whatever they want, no matter the cost to freedom or society.

I don’t care about Apple. I care about freedom. It’s quite disingenuous to preemptively castigate anyone who disagrees with you as being primarily concerned about Apple’s profits.

Let’s do better!

But yes I’m totally supportive of any laws that level the playing field and create open markets.

And you see how this regulation prevents someone from entering this open market with a system that allowed people to spend less time vetting applications and helped make more small businesses visible to the end user,?

This new regulation undermines nothing. You can stay in the walled garden if you like. Nothing changes for you.

I cannot. The walled garden has been dismantled. I can choose to not venture beyond where the walls once were, but that's a very, very different thing.

I tried to take responsibility for what was installed on my device by choosing a system that reduced the time and energy to manage that responsibility. Now that is gone.

Ok, so maybe we're not so far apart. You agree then that this new regulation undermines my freedom to do that?

No, I believe Apple undermines your freedom to install, or not install, what you wish. I should be able to install anything I want, for any reason I want, without any blessing other my own.

Apple shouldn't have a say-so in how hardware, that I purchase, is used, not should the government. The end-user should decide.

I say this with having zero desire to sideload apps. I'll probably never use said feature, but I think it should be there.

The walls are still there. There just happens to be something on the other side. Stay in the garden if you want to. Or don’t.

Every other platform out there allows side loading, or as it’s more commonly called, installing. And the sky hasn’t fallen. So bored with the drama and narcissism around the side loading issue. I miss the good old days when tech fans weren’t so fearful.

Bingo. Imagine if Tesla forbid you from driving their vehicles into certain parts of town….because “safety”!

Would anyone support such nonsense?

I find this argument hypocritical. "Freedom for me, but I support forcing you to do what I want."
