I wonder what the workers do all day at that facility?

I realize the joke is about no one buying the Mac Pro, but the reason that it was being made in the US is that robots end up being cheaper than humans over time. Re-watch this an pay attention to what "Manufacturing in America" is likely to really look like. Not the rows of pink workers, but rows of yellow robots.

You do realize I didn't vote for Hillary Clinton? I thought she was just as garbage as Trump is.

What low-income urban area in the USA has 300,000 people available to assemble iPhones? Name the city.

Keeping in mind that this isn't about creating vast assembly lines of low skilled workers, according to the most recent Los Angeles unemployment report there are almost 350K unemployed in just that area. Keep in mind that doesn't count those who have given up looking for jobs, or there would be many hundreds of thousands more in LA. Or those that are underemployed and want a better job, again hundreds of thousands more in LA. You have a serious misconception of how many people in this country don't have jobs or who are underemployed. Maybe that's why so many struggle to understand the recent election. A lot of the misunderstanding has to do with the fact that we use a grossly misleading unemployment figure, one that excludes those who have dropped out of the work force and have given up. Hopefully Congress will change this as it has gone on for decades to make them look better in both parties.

This is idiotic. If Obama has to make an announcement each and every time some company creates jobs in the US, he'll be sitting there 24/7 making announcements.

And do you honestly believe Softbank just snapped a finger and decides to invest 50B in the US within a month? really?
Sigh... Let me quote myself from my own post.

... this is great. Jobs for Americans. Cheers.

Your post has absolutely nothing to do with what I was talking about.

See above, you've got to open your mind beyond your political bias and understand that your image of production is, and to a large extent with the iPhone has always been, outdated. Foxconn just eliminated in its most recent phase 30K assembly line workers, replacing them with robots. That work is largely, though not completely, going away in China and elsewhere. Yes, there will still be a need for a few low skilled workers, but the good paying jobs that we want are the tens of thousands of engineering jobs that are crucial to running the production plants, maintaining and developing the robotics, etc. The vast majority of Americans don't care, and don't have time for, the political battle that some want to have. They want folks that will work together to usher in a renaissance of vocational education and good paying jobs for the vast number of Americans who have dropped out of the work force or who are underemployed.

That's not what Trump is talking about and I'll bet a lot of the people who voted for him in the rust belt aren't engineers. He was specifically pandering to low skilled workers telling them them their jobs are going away because of trade, Mexico and China. It's mostly BS but they bought it hook line and sinker. There was no personal responsibility in anything he said to these people. He didn't talk about entitlement or welfare reform; he just told them all their problems were a result of NAFTA and made China and Mexico boogeymen.

Who says it all needs to be done in one place? Also, if Apple is smart, they will just move North America manufacturing here. It does not have to be all or none. but back to your other point... there are thousands of people in our inner cities who would love the opportunity to learn a manufacturing skill so that they can make real money. I'm sure it wouldn't take much to find locations that would draw in the workers.

So it's ok for consumers of other countries to buy US made products but US consumers should only buy American made products?
is that what I said??? I simply said it would be better to have the products made in the USA be a company from the USA vs a china based company in the USA.. that's all you read way to much in to it

Again, your politics has you overwrought and blind. You are unintentionally insulting so many people by both suggesting that "low skilled" workers are ignorant and that people who work in factories are low skilled. I'll bet those workers at the Carrier plant would have something to say to you about calling them "unskilled." It would be a great thing if we can bring production back to the US and create more and better paying jobs for Americans who are suffering from unemployment and underemployment. Why can't you put your politics aside and analyze the other issues involved in Foxconn's exciting news that they are seriously considering this? It almost seems as though you would prefer that Americans don't get these jobs because Trump might get some credit.

TOTALLY agree with you, bro. right on

These jobs are coming to the US whether it's Trump or not.
These are for their robotics division. They need tons of software/hardware engineers to design robots that's going to replace factory workers.

According to you, these jobs are "created" just because Trump is elected. He doesn't even need to lift a finger. LOL

Where did I say that? I didn't

Last I checked those are jobs too.

Why do you hate so much?

And the speeches would look like this.....

"Fellow Americans, over 50,000 jobs were created in the fast food industry in the last year. Another 50,000 in retail, and another 50,000 in service industries coming from companies like Uber. Plus, with the holidays right around the corner, companies are gearing up to make this one of the most lucrative employment years ever! Yes, we know most of these jobs are minimum wage and you'll be lucky if you get more than 20hrs a week from any of these positions, but with the number of jobs being added, you can easily take on 3-4 jobs to help support your family."

Like I said these jobs are destined for the US regardless who is elected.

Do you honestly believe billion dollar joint ventures make decisions like these within a month?

OK, we get it, anything that Trump does that results in good for America is a coincidence. Time to move on. Having been well read on this topic, you are the first person who ever claimed that it is inevitable that Foxconn and others would move production back to the US. In fact, I'd agree with most that even with huge incentives it will be an enormous challenge since the US lacks exactly what you believe is forcing Foxconn to come to the US--engineers and other technical workers.

Steve Jobs predicted the jobs would never come back because of this.

"Another critical advantage for Apple was that China provided engineers at a scale the United States could not match. Apple’s executives had estimated that about 8,700 industrial engineers were needed to oversee and guide the 200,000 assembly-line workers eventually involved in manufacturing iPhones. The company’s analysts had forecast it would take as long as nine months to find that many qualified engineers in the United States.

In China, it took 15 days.

Companies like Apple “say the challenge in setting up U.S. plants is finding a technical work force,” said Martin Schmidt, associate provost at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In particular, companies say they need engineers with more than high school, but not necessarily a bachelor’s degree. Americans at that skill level are hard to find, executives contend.
"

Wow this is something I never thought would happen. Is it because Apple doesn't want to be taxed by trump?

Partially, I think it is. There are incentives to do it.

Yes, Trump can and should take some credit. He mentions something like this and it becomes a subject of study.

Now that he is the the new incoming President a lot of stuff he talked about will be put into play in some form or another - We have turned the corner!

Apple corporation - for all it's "green" goodness, and fantastic support for "red" products was basically playing by the rules and exploiting the advantages of globalism (like every other company producing their goods in China - all of them do it).

If Apple wants to be the biggest company and show the world that they use Solar Power and Recycle and try their best to be "green" and all that, and wants to be the best supporter of a great charity like "project red" or whatever it is, needs to also start proving that the world's most profitable and largest company can produce at least some of it's products in the USA. Way to go Trump for even bringing it up (to the attention of the mostly owned propagandized MSM).

Now it is happening, and can "Trump" take credit? Sure as heck he should! I don't care if this deal came about in June 2016, Trump mentioned the Apple (threatening remarks about Carrier and Apple) thing earlier than that. Even if Hillary won the election, Apple realizes it has to do something because Trump mentioned it and put in on your (MSM) radar.

Just like NATO "suddenly" taking interest in fighting ISIS instead of an imaginary Russian invasion - lol. They changed their tune ONLY because Trump said what he said about NATO.

Many other examples of how the world is going to change in a positive way because of Trump. \

Yes, we will have to pay more for some goods - so what. It might bring back the middle class in America!

It turns out that if you demonize the people you disagree with, paint them as racists and oppressors, and tell them that any and all of their successes are a result of some unearned “privilege,” they will create a counterrevolution. President-elect Trump is the consequence of these actions.

It's unconscionable that she said it, and that it was actually scripted and nobody thought better of it before it landed on her teleprompter. This is exactly what sank Romney, however, I believe the intent was totally misconstrued, unlike Romney's -- many of a segment of Trump's base represent the worst aspects of humanity -- bigotry, racism, misogyny, extremists, alarmists, opportunists, criminals, etc. But to say it the way she said it was just tone-deaf.

Just when I thought our country was moving away from manufacturing jobs to technology jobs, Trumps comes along and sets us back.

I feel like bringing manufacturing jobs back to the US is an attempt to keep the working class from progressing so the rich can get richer.
