Uma

One thing I haven't seen mentioned is T-Mobile's support of UMA. Forget the femtocell. Some phones on T-Mobile's network, like my BlackBerry 8900, can route cellular traffic over WiFi, cutting down on the number of dead spots especially in urban areas.

Sucks for you then cause I get blazing 3G speeds with TMO on my other phone than my coworkers do on ATT.
Your assumption is again incorrect.

I'm actually a happy T-Mobile customer, however I use a Motorola dumbphone with their Pay As You Go prepaid service. I am not an iPhone owner. I do enjoy using my iPod touch though.

I also have a Truphone Local Anywhere SIM (it can connect to AT&T or T-Mobile). If AT&T had better reception, I would have used up my T-Mobile minutes and switched to the Truphone SIM on AT&T; T-Mobile unlocked my phone a couple of years ago.

Minutes do not expire on Truphone, but you have to use the service at least once every sixty or ninety days (I forget) or it gets put in inactive status (there's a nominal charge to remove it from that status).

That T-Mobile USA rolled out their 3G network late is not opinion. It's fact and the T-Mobile folks have actually stated that they are late adopters. I'm not saying that a T-Mobile user can't have a great 3G experience today. I just wrote that they rolled it out after the other big three U.S. mobile operators.

It will go to T-Mobile and one week later AT&T will probably annouce they have bought out T-Mobile. :)
Yeah, right.

AT&T has just over 2 billion in cash but 69 billion in debt. They're really interested in buying a smaller network that fits within their network coverage footprint.

Wait a minute...

For my money, I'm still betting iPhone comes to Verizon in January. The biggest "hint" for me was AT&T bumping-up upgrade status 6-months, or basically until the end of December.

I bet when Apple released the iPad 3G they re-negotiated the AT&T exclusivity to end in December 2010. So the report of Verizon picking up iPhone 4 in January makes the most sense to me.

I'm not a Tin-Foil-Hat-Guy, but I bet T-Mobile sees some interesting fluxes in their stock price thanks to these latest rumors.

I've been on T-Mobile since late 2000, but I'm ready to follow the iPhone to it's new carrier. I've been putting change into an old jar to save up for the day it becomes available. I just hope we don't see such a mass exodus from AT&T that we all bog-down the new carrier...

They don't have good coverage for those of you that think ATTs coverage is bad, but I'd switch for the $60/month unlimited data/text and 500 or 600 anytime minutes plan (we will see if it continues to exist with the iphone4).

When a carrier introduces a new iPhone, it is typically accompanied by new service plans.

It is illogical to base your theoretical purchase based on current service plans. If the iPhone comes to T-Mobile USA, they will probably announce new plans. We don't know what these will be, but they will not be identical to what you see today. Potential customers will have to make their decision when they see what the new terms are, not what's happening right now.

Interesting

As an Apple fan: So they are going from a crappy carrier to a terrible carrier. Great plan. They should just license it to all carriers and be done with it.

As an Investor: If that happened there stock would go there through the roof. 300 here we come. with an actual inked T-mobile deal I'd say we'll be up near 280. Kicked ass yesterday with some options because of those earnings baby. If this is legit, I'd bet it would come near the end of the quarter in late September, early October. Probably will hurt ATT stock, since the number of new subscribers will slow way the heck down, but they do have a ton of iPhone subscribers stuck in new 2 year contract including myself. I would imagine that Verizon does not need Apple as much as they used to now that they have the Droid.

Do you use T's 3G in Mpls? How is it?

Apple is not going to add another carrier while the death grip scandal is going on...it would expose the iPhone as the true culprit behind dropped calls and what not...and restore some confidence in AT&T's network...currently Apple is happy to have AT&T as a "whipping boy" to take it on the chin for the iPhone's shortcomings
I wasn't aware people were really fingering (pun not intended) AT&T over the iPhone 4 reception. From what I've seen everyone is blaming the iPhone 4, because the issue really wasn't there with previous iPhones (no magic signal killing hand hold).

Maybe Apple should buy T-Mobile.
Don't know how I feel about that. :-\ On the one hand the iPhone would definitely come to T-Mobile then and would probably be supported better by Apple than AT&T iPhones. On the other hand my T-Mobile performance is very good and I don't want it so be as bad as my .Mac email.

Big news! Later this summer, T-Mobile will unveil its first HSPA+-capable smartphone. More details will be available in the coming weeks.
Does anyone think that "first HSPA+-capable smartphone" would be referring to the iPhone 4?

I am glad for this news. I was getting a little weak kneed and considered jumping back to ATT for an iPhone 4. Even if this story is not true with increasing number of these rumors, especially now that it is not just VZW, I think it should happen by the next iPhone. Worth waiting for, especially since I will be in an area with spotty ATT coverage for possibly a year.

no tmobile please

it's been said several times before on this thread but why would apple go from one bad company to an even worse one? very bad idea. i hope it doesn't happen.
the only way this would be ok is if they are also releasing it on ALL major carriers.. verizon, sprint, tmobile, etc. which they WON'T do.

if they're not gonna release a verizon compatible iphone and instead use tmobile they're idiots. plain and simple. they could have sold 6 million iphones instead of only 3 if they had done it this time around. most of the people i know that own android phones only bought them because there's not an iphone on their carrier--not because they didn't want or couldn't afford one. apple shot themselves in the foot when they married ATT, and as a result Android had plenty of carriers to thrive in..basically they helped ensure the success of their stiffest competition....the truths sucks.

Great idea

I think adding T-Mobile to the fold would be great for all concerned.

People who use T-Mobile and live/work in solid coverage areas could benefit.

Market forces (competition) might bring down AT&T pricing for everyone else, or at least serve as a check on their pricing/quality.

T-Mobile instantly gets a great shot in the arm financially during difficult economic times.

Apple has an additional retail infrastructure to sell its products through, and the "conversion" will cost nothing because jailbroken iPhones work just fine on T-Mobile's network.

It sets an iPhone precedent for using more than one network, and Verizon wouldn't be far behind.

Everybody wins.

Anything more than just AT&T will be a welcome move.

AT&T is needs to feel the fire in their pants and work a lot harder to keep up instead of just saying crap like it will take another three years to upgrade their towers to yesterday's performance expectations.

I hope the rumor is real...so I maybe able to get my iPhone 4 officially unlocked from AT&T...or Apple will start to sell unlocked iPhone~:D

T-Mobile in the UK has had an announcement page on their website for a while now saying that iPhone 4 is coming to their network and users can sign up to register their interest.

I wonder if they are trying to co-ordinate some sort of simultaneous launch with T-Mobile US.

most of my german phones were tri-band phones working in europe and us just fine.

i dream that t-mobile gets its act together and offers an international phone and data plan. same sim, same number, same price in germany, uk and us (and maybe other european countries). that would be a clear advantage over other providers and would draw certainly the business crowd and frequent travelers.

Why rag on T-Mobile?

Some of you guys are ragging on T-Mobile as if it stole your wife! "Oh God, NOT T-Mobile!" Competition is always a good thing. And even if it did go to T-Mobile, none of you are forced to use it. You say that their network is sub par, but they have really been the only company consistently upgrading their network. You say they can't handle the iPhone, but they handle a decent amount of other smartphones without a problem. Their customer service is top notch and have excellent 3G speeds. Not sure how anyone can say they go from bad to worse by going from AT&T to T-Mobile, but a decent amount of customers see it as an upgrade. They offer cheap service, great CS, and great rate plans. You guys complain about AT&T's service, then when presented with other potential options, you complain about that too.

Personally, I considered jumping ship to get the iPhone on AT&T in September when my contract runs out. However, I think I'll stick around to see if this comes to fruition. I'm not a T-Mobile fanboy, or Android fanboy (Nexus One user currently), or Apple fanboy (13" MBP). I try to see things at face value and make my decisions based on what works for me better. I have had no problems with T-Mobile in Atlanta, and shouldn't have any AT&T problems either should I actually jump ship. Hopefully this turns out true. Just stop acting suicidal if it actually does.
