Is that really what you think Tim has contributed? Quantum leaps in technology, or even in phone technology? I get your point and your use of hyperbole, but you're talking about someone who cranks the handle every year for a decade and still charges 10X for storage.
People have been complaining about how much Apple charges for RAM and storage since long before Steve got sick.

Unpopular opinion on MacRumors, but I think Tim Cook is a fantastic CEO and Apple is extremely lucky to have him. I suspect many of the complaints about Apple’s actions that are thrown his way would be actions that any CEO of Apple, including Steve would have taken.

That’s not to say that Apple doesn’t miss Steve; I suspect Tim would be the first to admit it. But no one could fill those shoes.

You’re completely ignoring Apple Silicon which was a massive innovation that happened under Tim Cook.
Technically Apple Silicon is just a continuation of iPhone and iPad SoCs. Tim’s decision was to switch the Macs to that, since performance had caught up with Intel, not the least thanks to the progress in TSMC’s process nodes. It was a big change for the Macs, but a natural evolution from the existing ARM SoCs.

I will never own a folding phone. What crap.
Each to their own. I would happily buy one. An iPhone that opens into a small iPad would be ideal for me. I’ve been tempted by the Galaxy Z Fold but I would prefer to stay with iOS.

Please ditch the camera bump completely by adding a tiny amount of thickness to the device and use the extra space for more battery. The extra thickness would be slightly noticeable for about a week of usage and then completely forgotten. So simple. No camera bump, more battery life and no further lame debates about the best shape for a camera bump.
The camera of the iPhone 16 Pro Max protrudes more than 50% of the body thickness. Filling that up would mean that the phone would weigh close to 350 grams, or more than 12 ounces. I don’t think that would be popular.

In fact, I suspect the camera bump originated because making the camera flush made the phone too heavy/unwieldy. It’s not exactly an intuitive design choice - I think almost everyone would agree it’s not aesthetically pleasing - and yet almost every smartphone manufacturer includes one. Do people really think it hasn’t occurred to anyone inside of Apple (or any other manufacturer) to put more battery in there and make it flush?

You can’t trust Apple with the word „biggest“ or „significant“. Remember when they called watchOS 10 (?) the biggest change to AppleWatch? I wouldn’t even be able to tell what changed. Same with the watch itself.
Seriously? WatchOS 10 is *dramatically* worse and less pleasurable to use than before.

Not gonna lie, it looks like a PIxel 9

Instead of focusing on all the “Pro” features they should focus on a business oriented phone. I’d love a thin foldable phone that didn’t have 600 different photo modes and all the other BS. Or Frankly an iPhone 17 mini with updated chips so the overheat issue is fixed.

why would anyone want a bigger bump unless it is filled with a bigger battery. Or just get rid of the bump, make the phone thicker and take up all the space with more battery. While they are at it go back to 1 camera and fill that space with more battery also

I don't believe "people" want bigger. It's clear on MR there are varied opinions, but making a phone bigger and heavier - I think opinions are all over the place.

Aside from battery life, speed, and display, I don't know what you all think needs to change about the design. Sure, some want a foldable or a flush camera, but otherwise, smartphones will continue to look nearly the same. The 16 series isn't vastly different than the 5 except for size and improved materials (excluding screen and battery). It's a recycle. I'm on the 15 Pro Max and see no compelling reason to update in 2025 unless it breaks. I'm not interested in a foldable.

Who was running Apple from 2011 to 2019? Why didn’t Cook reuse designs then?

I swear Tim Cook’s Apple could invent Star Trek style transporters while curing cancer and introducing a quantum computer and people on MacRumors would be complaining about “bean counter Tim Cook” charging too much for RAM upgrades and how Steve is rolling in his grave.
You'd still have people posting how Apple cannot catch up to Google and Samsung because some widget wasn't customizable. ;)

Most people who complain on the internet don’t understand design and have magical thoughts. They don’t know how to think things through. They hear some random person say something and just repeat it like it makes sense.

If it was possible to have multiple lenses and reduce the bump Apple would have done it by now.

But sensor size is very important for photography. If a sensor is too small the pixels are worse at gathering light. You want a big sensor on a slim phone then you will have a noticeable bump if you want the optics to work.

Anyway the sensor is going to get bigger because the next big thing in smartphones will be 3D Gaussian splat photography. Gaussian splats were first described in the late 90s and now we are getting the compute power to be able to do it.

So by 2030 all phones will be able to shoot in three dimensions natively with good detail and high res geometry capture.

And by 2040 they will be able to do some limited amount of filming in three dimensions natively.

The form factor and the UI isn’t going to change much. The capabilities and the sensors are going to change the most.

Well considering every phone that’s looked exactly the same has been an “all new design” in Apple speak, I’m not expecting much tbh.
