Heh.

So err, its making the rounds everywhere.

Was this really worth posting? I remember reading your friend was employed by ATT. Wont she get canned for this?

Let's remember this is a $600 phone; I would think that a robust, enterprise-enabled push-type email system (like Blackberry or Treo with VerizonSync) would be an absolute must if they want to sell this to business users. Yahoo push mail is great if you use Yahoo, but if you use an Outlook based service at work, it looks as if we are out of luck.

Ouch.

Its 3:30am and I'm laying awake wondering about a few things.... Just maybe there is a LOT more going on here than anyone seems to be talking about....

- Whenever I see a photo of the iPhone, the little "home button" on the front strikes me as quite, quite out of place. Why put a button there at all? The whole front of the thing is touch-sesitive. But then I looked at my iMac and thought.. Hey, the size and shape of that thing seems to be identical to the integrated iSight camera.

- If its got an iSight camera on the front of it, then you've got to think that the 'mystery app' MUST be iChatAV. Would certainly quell 99% of the comments about IM in this thread so far. And if its the Leopard version, imagine the theatre mode thing where you appear in the little corner section (as you're facing the iPhone) and the big section is what is seen from the camera at the back of the phone. Mightly slick.

- So if its got iChatAV, well, that's not a very popular IM program right now. But if they could somehow tie it into iTunes and provide a Windows client... There are reportedly 300,000,000 iTunes installs out there (speculation of course, might be 500,000,000, might be 200,000,000). ALL of these are also unwittingly QuickTime installs. Between iTunes software and QuickTime, you've got about 95% of the code you need to make iChatAV work. So iChatAV could potentially gain half a billion users overnight in one simple software update.

- It would be easy to hide the fact that it is a camera on the front of the phone simply by not enabling it, or any pre-release applications, to have access to it. Simple upgrade and voila... Stunning new functionality. Fits nicely in to the "...and one last thing..." kind of presentation.

- Next, imagine you're a sales manager sitting at your desk. You use iChat to call up your three travelling salespeople who then participate in an "instant videoconference" by way of their iPhones. Who else could provide the end-to-end stuff to make this work? NetMeeting? MSN with video? I don't really think so. Who said this wasn't targeted at businesses? With this kind of thing just "there", I think it will be bye, bye RIM....

Thoughts, anyone?

This was my first thought when I saw the keynote. Look at the home button, I mean the little rounded square looks exactly like the built in iSight you see in all other mac products. I remember when I was doing the live coverage, I noted to someone on iChat that it had video conferencing for the simple fact that I thought the home button, had an iSight in it.

Great thoughts on iChat AV for windows, I had never thought about the relation between iTunes and Quicktime but you are absolutely right.

Am I the only one that thinks this whole brochure is a bunch of bullcrap?

So how did you get your hands on it, anyway, Cindy? Huh?

yeah, like she made up all those pages... get real...

the book is real, and she doesnt work for Apple or AT&T... and who cares if they try and find out... they cant sue you, its a sales advice/training book...

Unless I'm mistaken about the extent of 'free yahoo push email' then why would you want to PAY to send MMS texts when you can send and receive luxurious email for FREE?

IMO this is a little like Apple 'dropping' the floppy disk drive from the '97 imacs - caused all kinds of a stir (sheer panic!) from the windows faithful but in the end amounted to a big fat nuthin and historically proven to be a bold and logical step.

Perhaps disregarding MMS is a strategically similar move ?

In this ad the lovely pictures in the email clearly demonstrates the iphone's ability to send and recieve pictures in a seamless and elegant way.

Your IT admin can stick the Microsoft included pop3 gateway onto your outlook server in less than 60 seconds.

Expect .mac to do push

Kids, iChat AV is just not going to work over EDGE, it is way too slow. It would work over HSDPA their 3G system, but that's not in this model.

Here's a surprise I am expecting - .Mac will do some good things with the iPhone, like really good push EMail. .Mac has EMail, wouldn't it be dumb if it worked poorly with iPhone. Apple's not that dumb.

I've got lots of predictions for Monday, things like the BT headset will be bundled, there will be MultiTouch on new Mac displays, a new UI in Leopard and a bunch more. This will get you there.

what are the chances that apple didn't include x, y or z feature because they are being held back for later revisions and updates. why include the total package up front when you can incrementally update and get consumers to buy mulitple revisions just like the ipod line?

Those of you hoping for Skype might as well hope for a unilateral binding peace accord between the Palestinians and the Israelis tomorrow. Why whould AT&T allow their voice services to be undercut by Skype (or any other VOIP app for that matter) whenever you're in range of WiFi? They want you to use minutes they can bill you for.

apple better answer these questions monday. its ridicules to keep everything a secret until launch day when we'll all learn what we have to do to get one at the counter of an at&t store after waiting for hours. i will be in no mood to learn that i have to buy a $40/month plan in order to have one when my $20/month should cover it. if they start this, the product could flop. make it easy to get if you want to gain market share. the price is already high, why block out even more people? no MMS is a joke. this is a feature even free phones have. i cant believe we are celebrating that it vibrates! i mean, that should be understood.

this will be huge if it flops. apple's momentum will be slowed significantly.

ichat "AV" does need 3G, but simple IMs aren't. I use them over EDGE on my razr with no problem. it's a shame iphone doesn't have it on there.

I think you're on to something here. Seeing as how GPS is called out as NOT in the iPhone, you have to wonder what Apple might be holding back as a "Big" feature. This makes perfect sense! Also, the criticism about the camera being at the bottom of the screen is wrong, the whole point of the tilt sensor is that the GUI can realign itself. Button on bottom for most uses, button on side for movies, button (camera) on top for iChatAV.

I think someone's going to owe you $50 at launch when this function is turned on!

Seriously??? You guys honestly think they'd put 2 cameras in the phone AND put one of them under the place you're constantly smudging with the body oil from your thumb? Thank goodness you 2 don't work for Apple.

No GPS and no IM client for $500 - $600?!!!?!? I'll be using my razr for a while longer thank you very much.

It has probably been said, but I didn't read the whole thread (hey, that rhymed).

I hope the iPhone is open to third-party developers. This device badly needs an instant messaging client for me to consider buying one.

If Apple is not going to produce iChat for it, then please let there be a version of Adium. Adium makes the most sense anyway so people who use any network can have instant messaging (though that doesn't matter to me, personally).

I seriously hope this is announced at the SteveNote, otherwise, I will be waiting until this thing is more than just a novelty iPod.

EDIT - I wonder if AIM Express (java client) would work on the iPhone.

Yeah. Those were my thoughts exactly.

It seems like they've considered many possibilities already. It's cool, for example, that you'll be able to browse and talk at the same time.

...there are phones where you can't?

Wow, cellphones must really suck. I just assumed that any phone with the internet you could talk and surf at the same time:eek:

The button is needed no matter what screen you're currently on. Would you rather them put a Home button on every single screen hogging up valuable pixel real estate? It would drive me nuts if the Home button wasn't a hard key.

One disappointment is that according to that manual, you can't use voice and EDGE at the same time. I thought that was a feature of GSM? Well I'll probably still get one, but if I can't do voice and data, I might as well stay with CDMA on Sprint which also can't do voice and data at the same time.

Features listed here are set in stone...

..but features either not listed here, or listed as not being available could change through a software update.
