A couple of years is not really slow. My bank still hasn't implemented messaging inside their mobile app after ... (drumroll, please) ... 10 years!

Mine just got issued. Must have opened my mouth wide enough, haha. It shows Firstname Middlename L. (last initial). Kind of weird. I don’t need everyone to know my middle name. Should be just Firstname L.

Isn't it supposed to be a digital replica of a physical card?

Europe 2024…every country is doing there own implementation. 🤬 QR-Code or something stupid.
Europe 2035…they noticed that their implementations are bs*
Europe 2040…driver license can now be added to Apple wallet.

iPhone users in California can now add their digital driver's licenses and IDs in the Apple Wallet app on iPhone and Apple Watch, with California expanding an ongoing test of the digital license feature.

Several MacRumors readers have reported seeing the California license as an option in the Wallet app, under the label "California mDL Pilot." Prior to now, only a limited number of people were seeing the option.

Wallet app integration is part of California's mobile driver's license effort, which kicked off a year ago. More than 500,000 people have already added a driver's license or ID to the California DMV Wallet app, where California tested the option before starting to roll it out to the Wallet app.

Apple announced California's Wallet license plans back in August, and said that it was working with California to bring IDs to Apple Wallet.
IDs and licenses stored in the Wallet app on iPhone or iPad can be used for TSA screenings at select airports (including SFO, LAX, and SJC) and for age verification at select stores. Right now, California's mobile wallet support is still in an early stage, and only 1.5 million participants are able to sign up.

California requires people to continue to carry a physical license or ID card because the digital license is not accepted by law enforcement, state government agencies, and most businesses.

Apple announced a new Wallet app that supported digital IDs back in 2022, but states have been slow to adopt the feature. So far, only Arizona, Colorado, Georgia, Maryland, Hawaii, and Ohio have implemented support. Apple said in 2022 that Connecticut, Iowa, Kentucky, Oklahoma, and Utah are working on support, and today added that Montana, New Mexico, and West Virginia also plan to adopt the functionality.

did this early this am, scanned DL and took picture, it verified about an hour later and i now have a CADL in my Apple Wallet. can't manually see any information and presumably when prompted by a suitable RFID system it will display and/or transmit the credential. cool.

Trepidation here. The state of policing is pretty out of control in the US. They don't even know what the fourth Amendment is in most cases. I hope there are pretty strict regulations re protecting people's rights if the police see this as a way to potentially take possession of someone's unlocked phone. I wish I had more confidence but I suspect we'll see cases of police misusing this under the pretext of "investigations".
The only way to protect your phone from government intrusion is to use a passcode. Otherwise, they'll grab you by the hair and try to use your face to unlock it, or force each of your fingers and thumbs until it unlocks it. They will happily break your digits in the name of your resisting them.

Hmm. Went through the process and it said I need to wait for them to verify. Not sure there's much point if I have to have my card with me anyway. If only they'd make voting this hard...

Anyone tried this on Android? I don't think it's letting me add my ID on iOS simply because I already have my CA license on my Android device.

Well, after being rejected yesterday, I tried again. Still got the open my mouth wide open request, then turn head left. But then a new thing happened - basically the process said eff it, just take a photo of your stupid face since you can't follow directions.

Then I get an alert asking for more info, which then opens up my mDL app, which then asks if I am allowing Apple Wallet access to my personal information. After selecting "yes". 30 sec later, I have my ID in my wallet.

Now I have one more place to see my ID photo which happens to be the worst photo in my entire life of my face.

Hi! No issues here, as soon as the “California mDL pilot program” showed up in Wallet, tried it, scanned my DL, took some pics closing my eyes, mouth opened… And two minutes later the DL popped up in my Apple Watch and iPhone.

I was previously enrolled in the pilot program and got the Mobile Driver License, maybe that helped in the quick validation process.

Submitted in the morning got approved half hour later. Wallet ID is just my first name with last name initial, no picture, no DOB. No one will accept this as legitimate ID.

It only shows all the details once it's accessed by a legitimate scanner. That is for your PROTECTION.

I'm all for good thorough law enforcement, but the last thing I want to do is hand my freakin' smartphone to a police officer. A DL is just a little card anyway fercryinoutloud. This is an answer to a question that nobody asked.

I tried adding it yesterday late afternoon. I don't know if I quite followed all the directions on moving face, head. Didn't see (or missed) the one about opening mouth. About an hour later or so I got it approved and into the wallet. No request for photo of passport or any other issue. Nice graphics for the card (Bixby bridge I think?).

For those wondering - no, the DL wallet does not transfer to a new phone so you have to do the whole process again. However, in my experience this worked better than the first time. When I tried this again with my new 16 Pro, it took the photos and in about 10 min, successfully added. I don't think this has anything to do with iPhone models but here are the differences that I know of:

1st time on my 14 Pro - I also had a digital DL on my DL app before trying to add to wallet. After initially failing, I retried and the verification included opening the mDL app and accepting the sharing of personal info. Then the wallet went thru.

New 16 Pro - I transferred everything from the 14. However in the mDL app all my info was gone. I decided to try to add to wallet and it worked as described above.

I can only conclude that if you have the digital DL on the myDL app, this causes issues. It seems you should only have one or the other digital DL method, not both.

Ugh first one got rejected (Im guessing bad lighting on my pics in the office?). Second one went through, the next day got a request for MORE verification. Started on the link and they want a passport or birth certificate now? If I actually had either one, I would've had my RealID now, but unfortunately the county office I have to go to is an hour away, and I need to take a whole day off work just to go get my certificate, when its actually ready once I order it. I'll try again after that one expires out heh.

I think it's one of those things where once it's fully functional and useful, we'll never want to go back to the old way. Credit cards are also just little cards, but now that Apple Pay can be used pretty much anywhere, I'd never want to go back to having to carry all of my cards on me everywhere. Being able to go out with just my phone and MagSafe wallet is so nice and convenient.

And to clarify, you'll never need to hand your phone over to anyone. It uses NFC just like any tap to pay function, so all you have to do is tap your phone or Apple Watch on the reader and it will display your ID information to the person requesting, but it only sends whatever information is required. For example, if you're trying to buy alcohol somewhere, it will only transfer proof of your date of birth. The store won't be able to see your address or anything, so it's actually even more safe and private than using your physical ID.
