It’s gonna be a while before bars and such start accepting this as proof of age for alcohol.

The ID in the wallet is pretty featureless and doesn’t include a photo or birthdate. You have to tap the ID, then the Info button in the upper right, then select the Driver’s License Info which will Face ID the user and *Then* show a picture and age.
My pharmacy scans my barcode on my DL when I pick up controlled meds, does anyone know what it pulls up when they do? I would have guessed my DMV info and photo, but maybe just a watch list if my ID has been used too many times or for shady meds/amounts?

State ID/DL physical cards are revenue for some states rapidly gaining people. This will never happen in Washington.
You still need a physical card, this is just so you don't have to carry it with you. Case in point, I added my Ohio DL today and then renewed it. The cool thing is the digital version is already updated to match my new expiration date while I wait for my new card in the mail.

The barcode encodes the written information on the front of the ID.

Pharmacy checks the name and address info match on the prescription. There's a government database that tracks prescriptions and who picks them up (for controlled substances). Probably nothing linked to the DMV database, however, DMV database is used by law enforcement principally and they aren't doing extensive ID checks unless there's significant discrepancies (ie, name and address not matching, and the pharmacist has to check the picture matches the person as well).

Great idea... extend the digital prison they're building for us. They're quite open that they want to replace cash and physical ID's. One more step towards taking away both from those who oppose wicked agendas...

Nope, that's not how it works. They'll have a device to read your digital ID via NFC and then pull up the information from the state's system.

It works the same way as contactless payments. Do you hand the cashier your phone when you pay for something?
I see it as a nice thing to have, and that it’ll hopefully be useful in some cases like at a liquor store or restaurant, but personally I would still carry the physical card, unfortunately breaking the wallet-free dream.

The issue I see is if a cashier is unfamiliar with the Apple Pay/contactless process or if the system is otherwise malfunctioning and you don’t have a physical card on you, you’re free to walk away from the transaction. If the same thing happened during a traffic stop, you’re not just free to go until you’re told so.

For example Florida allows digital vehicle insurance cards, but in an infamous recent case, someone was stopped at an airport, and the officer insisted the driver broke the law by not having a hard copy of their insurance card.

Florida needs to find a new vendor for their app that supports Wallet IDs.

The old app was hot garbage. California’s app was meh but it still worked.
Florida is hot garbage and has vowed to basically repeat their same failed process that led to the first unusable app. No one there seems to even understand why they are making their own app and they can’t answer why they haven’t pursued the digital wallets that already support virtual ID.

Yeah still carry physical but hopefully this does take off. Ohio did also release an app to read Wallet ID's to verify age so like a bouncer at a bar could use this.

iPhone and Apple Watch users in Ohio are now able to add their digital IDs and driver's licenses to the Wallet app on the iPhone, providing a convenient alternative to a physical card.

Ohio is the fifth state to add support for digital IDs in the Wallet app, following Arizona, Maryland, Colorado, and Georgia.

Apple announced plans to add support for digital IDs way back in September 2021, but the feature requires states to implement support, and so far, the rollout has been quite slow.

Connecticut, Hawaii, Iowa, Kentucky, Mississippi, Oklahoma, and Utah are also supposedly working on support for adding a driver's license or ID to the Wallet app, but it has been over two years and none of these states have added the feature. In 2021, Apple said that it was in "discussions with many more states" and was hoping Wallet IDs would be available nationwide in the future.

IDs and licenses stored in the Wallet app can be used in select U.S. airports at TSA checkpoints.
  • Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI)
  • Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA)
  • Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX)
  • Denver International Airport (DEN)
  • Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL)
Wallet app IDs can also be used for showing proof of age or identity at certain businesses and venues, but adoption of this functionality is also limited. Ohio says that businesses and organizations with "compliant mobile ID readers" can accept digital IDs.

It’s still listed as a coming soon feature in Queensland Australia, as it has been for the last two years.

I am more curious what's the holdup on rolling this out to TSA nationwide? Photo boarding pass - no problem. Phone ID - wtf is this?
You saw what happened with the Global 🌍 IT Outage? States still want the physical card and they don’t wanna invest money new technology infrastructure cause Apple Dam sure not chipping in money to help the states. They just taking a 5% fee for Apple Pay 😆

so what is the hold up rolling this out? Are states concerned about security or is there some back-end sw infrastructure they are missing
My guess is plain old government inefficiency and stodginess.

Yeah I’m gonna wait to see the final product before I write it off as a failure.

That’s awesome!

All of my relatives on my Dad’s side of the family live in Ohio so I just sent them this article to let them know that this feature has just become available considering most of my cousins, aunts and uncles all use iPhones 📱

There’s no mention of this feature becoming available at the TSA checkpoints at the airports in Ohio but I’d definitely appreciate an update as to when it might become available at both Cleveland Hopkins and Cincinnati CVG airports as my relatives live in both Cleveland and Cincinnati and I fly through both airports from time to time (especially Cleveland)

I’m looking forward to this feature eventually becoming available in both Rhode Island and Massachusetts (where I currently live) so that I can have the ability to add my state ID to my iPhone and be able to have it with me at all times

CA has their own app for this which I’ve had for a year or so, and never used it, yet.
Sure would be nice if states could agree on a common approach…
the California app isn't that great. They are still in beta are they not? They shoudlnt have tried to recreate the wheel on this one.

This is literally useless. Az has had this for awhile and no one accepts it as an ID.
I was stopped in Arizona while driving across the US and produced a digital version of my overseas drivers licence… we’ve had them for years. Policeman was perfectly happy to accept it as a form of ID.

Because Apple stuff doesn’t use CrowdStrike. Or many Microsoft products at all…

Except for Azure.

I was stopped in Arizona and used my digital Arizona ID. No issues at all. The cop just wrote the numbers down and typed it in the car. I held my phone the whole time and they said “they’re not allowed to touch it during traffic stops”
