Cruised through Regan Airport last week with digital id. Luckily I live in a state that supports it.

I’m stunned Ohio is in the first 5 states in anything but there it is. Go buckeyes. Pretty cool it does a hologram effect when you tilt the phone 😆

Ive had this in Colorado for a couple years. its not all that useful. ive tried to use it a couple times when I fly out of DIA. The first time, it wouldnt work with their NFC scanners (even though they had a screen saying you could). The 2nd time, the TSA agent told me he needed my physical ID regardless. I was able to succesfully use it at the Oklahoma City airport once. thats the only time.

Bars only accept the Colorado state app, which is not the same as this. ive never tried to use this one at a bar or restaurant, but unless you hit the "Info" button on the ID, it doesnt even show you anything so I dont think it would work

I was stopped in Arizona and used my digital Arizona ID. No issues at all. The cop just wrote the numbers down and typed it in the car. I held my phone the whole time and they said “they’re not allowed to touch it during traffic stops”
It’s still pretty useless overall. It requires special technology to read and verify it. Police may take it, but try to use it as a form of ID to by alcohol or get into a bar. TSA were supposed to be some of the first entities to accept it, and they still require a physical ID in Az at the airport.

Don’t get me wrong, I’ve had it since it came out here and think it’s pretty cool. It’s just still pretty useless and I still have to bring my physical ID.

Ive used the Apple Wallet ID at every flight without an issue with TSA, and I have even used it in SF, and LA to come back home. Never an issue, and they never asked for my physical ID. Recently they also made a few more changes that should make it easier, instead of handing your ID over, you insert it (or tap your phone) yourself into the machine, as well as it being available in every lane now, not just PreCheck.

As for bars and restaurants, use the AZ Mobile ID app, not Apple Wallet, as it's a digital replica of your ID, not requiring any special technology. I used the mobile ID app with the police, not Apple Wallet. Apple Wallet one is only useful at the airport, and I haven't found anywhere else that would accept it, except for the actual MVD Office, as they had the reader for it on the check in kiosk.

Supposedly Mill Ave bars all take Apple Wallet ID now, but I am too old for Mill Ave, and it's too rowdy for my liking., so I will let someone else test it there.

Had this since day 1 in Arizona, and haven't used it a single time. Nobody accepts it, minus a handful of airports, and it's useless in those now since they simply do facial scanning and no ID or boarding pass is needed. Prior to the facial scanning they would look at you like you were crazy when you presented it to them--so still a useless "feature" at this point in time. Law enforcement won't even accept it as valid ID.

Edit: the state of AZ mobile ID app does work for law enforcement and TSA (but again, they use facial scanning now with no ID needed).

I don’t intimately know how this is implemented in the US, but I’m very confident digital licences are done better in Australia, albeit in a state app rather than the Apple wallet.

If we continue at this pace, we might reach all 50 states in 50 years.
Considering RealID started in 2005 and is finally going to be required to fly/enter federal spaces in May 2025, you're probably not far off. I have no idea why it took some states forever to get on the bandwagon, but it sure did.

The downside is the currently limited upside. You still have to carry your physical ID when driving. You can only use it at a few airports. You probably can't use it at many stores yet, though Ohio does have an iOS app for verifying IDs. (How many POS terminals currently support ISO 18013-5?)

So... kinda like the early days of ApplePay.

North Carolina should get this July 2025. It will be interesting to see if they have it implemented by then though.

As soon as this is live in Ontario, I can finally stop carrying a wallet!

I also wouldn’t mind a passport version of this…
I'm still nervous about putting all my eggs in one basket. I carry my wallet (and the cards) as sort of a backup if something happens with my phone. But I can see the convenience.

I leave mine in my car, but I only take my wallet with me if I know I’m making a purchase over $250, which is my phone tap limit.
