I tried the URL four times for speeds of:
142
177
195
160
Average 168.5
I ran the test sitting in my office, I have a window, at 12:15 pm. The speed is not too bad for a hand held device.

I am new to all this but considering an iPhone purchase.

When some of the posters say they are getting 77 kps, how does that compare to dial up. I can only get dial up on my home pc right now (50.6) and I am happy.

So does this mean that even s so called slow edge connection like 77 kps, would be an upgrade for me?

Yes.

My parents still use dial-up, and when I visit, I always use my iPhone, because it's a LOT faster.

People who complain about 200kbps being slow are the type who will never be satisfied. I get anywhere from around 30kbps to 200kpbs in W LA. Usually, it's well above 100kbps. Not as fast as wi-fi, but it's "good enough".

I have noticed though, that around noon-time, the speeds drop considerably. I guess people are surfing during their lunch break?

I do not have an iPhone anymore, but when I did, my EDGE speeds varied resulting with me getting around 120kbps average.

I must have messed my phone up by dropping it, because the touchscreen stopped working. I haven't done anything with the phone yet, I think I will get it repaired and then give it to my sister. So I got a new phone. AT&T Tilt.

Yes, its bigger than the iPhone and the plan costs more, but what I can do with the phone over the iPhone is a bigger benefit to me.

My 3G speeds vary from 600-800kbps. 800kbps is what I typically see though. As far as the real internet goes, Opera browser does a good job of giving me that, loading full images and what not.

The iPhone is great, but lets me real, loading full webpages on EDGE speeds is at times, worthless.

Simply not possible over EDGE on an iPhone.

If you're the only person using a tower channel, then you can get 236.8 kbps maximum.

Just shows how unreliable these speed tests are.

Actually, the theoretical maximum for EDGE is 473.6 kbit/s for 8 timeslots (see here). It depends how the carrier has implemented it.

That doesn't matter.

The speed limit is the number of slots the phone can use at one time. The iPhone uses a multislot Class 12 (see here) chip.

That means a maximum of four (4) slots in each direction. So the limit is 236 kbps.

164

I am getting a 164KBps right now. Not too bad concidering I don't have full signial here in Annapolis MD

90 in Chicago burbs from my home. 1200 on Wifi.

Slick's comment has held true for me sometimes.

the iphones on display at the apple store in regent st seem to be achieving greater speeds (i did turn wifi off).

OMG!! Im getting a speed of 464.1kbps on EDGE in East London UK

- I'm also in the UK (Ipswich, Suffolk)...

According to iphonenetworktest.com - my highest speed today was 491.. however, I feel that might be a bit too quick, as I believe that's above the maximum possible?...

.. my average was around 390ish, the lowest speed I got was 270.

An old thread, but I'm a new iPhone user... I just ran the test four times while sitting in my office in Crystal City, VA which is just across the Potomac River from DC. DC is supposed to have the 3G network already, so I would think the EDGE network is well established here. But I got the following test results (with WIFI turned off, even though we have no WIFI here):

109 kbps
11.1 kbps
20.5 kbps
43.6 kbps

Those numbers are well below the average. According to the iPhone, my signal has full bars. (I get so annoyed with those AT&T ads that say 'more bars in more places' - so not true.)

So do I blame these low speeds on my location, my building, AT&T's signal or a problem with the iPhones hardware?

Have you also noticed that you can't browse the internet very well while moving fast on the highway? (And I'm not talking about some remote, rural highway.)
