All i know is that my EDGE shows no signs of being slower than my EV-D0 windows mobile phone. Probably the phone was causing it to be slow.

LOL!

My Treo 755p is doing 800kpbs on Ev Do REV 0. Websites load up in a second rather than 10-30 seconds AT LEAST on an Iphone!

I've done the test twice and my results are horrible. With 4 bars in Columbus (Westerville) Ohio, I am getting 8.1 and 21.2 Kbps, no wonder it is painfully slow on the EDGE network!!! Why am I not getting the speeds that others are getting?

That's insane. I had a PPC 6700 and it ran like a dog especially with websites. I challenged an older blackberry that was on EDGE and I won, but my iPhone beats it hands down now.

So it must be my phone that was making the internet so slow...

I haven't gotten my iPhone yet, but I may be changing my take on this topic (for web browesing)....

What do web sites look like on the 755p (seriously), as compared to the iPhone? Are you getting wap text only emulated pages, or the full visual effect that the iPhone brings? Crap brought to you faster is still crap. You can fill a smaller glass quicker,.. i could go on :).

There are other factors to consider than just comparing web page download speeds. The iPhone displays a web page as it was designed to be seen and used, the result is certainly increased navigation efficiency overall,.... so therefore in the long term the Safari may pay back time lost from EDGE, ...with interest.

It may also depend on what type of browsing is being done,... wandering aimlessly link to link surfing the air, or reading articles and spending a few minutes at each site.

Now that i've used the iPhone for a few days...

When wifi is available, I use it, it works well.....but the few times i've had to use edge, GOOD GOD it just plain sucks. I'm still averaging 200-220 and I just can't stand it. I think the people that are saying its decent are just trying to convince themselves it doesn't suck something terrible, and was a huge mistake by apple. Is it enough to make me return my iPhone? Probably not.

I still enjoy the iPhone something fierce :)

Edge is fine with me. I was thinking about getting a 8525 instead of an iphone but look at the prices of the data plans. PDA Max is 44.99! 24.99 for 1300 more text messages and a hope that I get 3g in my area. I average 200-240kbps in the LA area. Paying 20 more instead of 44.99 is well worth the difference in the phones. 8525 ranges from $350-400. Money saved in 10 months.

Wow. Someone else from Westerville posted speeds of around 200 on the first page of this thread. I'm out of town right now, but I was getting about 180-190 in Dublin.

Improving EDGE speed

Has anyone else noticed how much the edge speed is affected by the way you hold the iPhone? I found the edge speed around 200k at times and 13k at others. Now I've noticed that by cupping my hand around the black plastic piece covering the antenna I can virtually stop a web page from loading. Seems like an easy fix for slow edge speeds.

227 in Honolulu, HI at this time.

For those complaining, EDGE will vary on many factors, but almost all are in ATT control. Call and complain!

For other phone users, give me a break, you lack a full browser and zoom with touch like iphone has. Try google maps on EDGE. Incredibly smooth! If it were all about d/l speeds.....well you sound like a windows user.

Here in the Murrieta/Temecula, CA area I'm getting 153.2kbps on EDGE. It seems snappier when I'm out of the house though, so I'll test it next time I go out.

Dial up?

I am new to all this but considering an iPhone purchase.

When some of the posters say they are getting 77 kps, how does that compare to dial up. I can only get dial up on my home pc right now (50.6) and I am happy.

So does this mean that even s so called slow edge connection like 77 kps, would be an upgrade for me?
