I need a better contacts app!

The iphones biggest problem is its contacts interface. Why in the world would Apple only design it to be filed by first or last name? What about the millions of business people who have to sift through a 1000 plus contacts for business purposes. I can barely remember my first name, let alone another thousand other people in my contacts list. I NEED TO BE ABLE TO SEARCH BY "COMPANY"!

Cut & Paste would help out tremendously too.

I have a suggestion.. though I'm not real sure how feasible this would be for what you are trying to do. Try typing the person entire name is the 'First' section and then the company name in the 'Last' section. Then you should be able to search by both. You could do the name 'First, Last' or 'Last, First' in the 'First' section, depending on how you most often search.

Sounds good in theory, but it wouldnt work well with Microsoft Outlook. Its really an easy fix if they would just add "company" to the display criteria.

You can, I agree that the iPhone should have the ability to sort by company as well. Also, the Missed/Recent calls needs In/Out lists as well.

Should be out by Friday. although September does have 30 days so they could wait until a week from tomorrow. just to mess with us.

30th September is a Sunday. He didn't see "later in a month", he said "later *this* month". I highly doubt a Sunday release. My bet is 25th Sept., Tuesday, as previous two updates have been Tuesday and this is the last Tuesday in Sept.

and just to make sure...if i buy an iphone today...and the firmware is released next week, i can still load it on to mine right? its not like they would only offer it to iphones released after the firmware release date...right???

Yes, you will still be able to update to all the new software.

Oh no absolutely. Buy it right this minute and you'll get it when it comes out. Eventually, for technical or marketing reasons, when new advanced models are out -- not just more storage -- they may make certain feature advances only available to iPhone 2s. But not for a long time. In the case of iPhone, probably not until sometime into iPhone 3. Buy it today if you were planning on it.

We think we know more or less when it will come out because Steve Jobs said at the 5th September iPod event where he announced the WiFi Music Store that iPhone would get WiFi Music Store "later *this* month". This month is almost over. Tuesdays have been the usual iPhone update days, so that's why I say Tuesday. I'm not betting on tomorrow. Of course he was talking specifically about WiFi Music Store, and we know specifically there are other new features in the wings for iPhone, but purely technically, we might only get WiFi Music Store by the end of this month.

Either way, I don't see us getting real iChat IM this time. But I don't have a crystal ball. In the interim, try meebo.com via Safari -- you can check out the computer version on your Mac or PC; the iPhone-only version comes up automatically when you hit it with iPhone Safari.

To reiterate though, if you were running out this afternoon to buy one, go ahead, you'll get the update just like the rest of us.

That's the stupidest thing I've ever heard, people still need to use their phone but they don't want the data to be used.

A button to turn off EDGE completely would be the best as you can accidentally hit a button (e.g. Safari) and start costing yourself money.

I live up here near Canada. Whenever I am on a road near the border I sometimes catch rogers wireless. I have my email set to manually check, but I would rather have it check every 15 minutes except when I am roaming. So in my case it would be great to have this feature. Only because I "cross the border" without leaving the country.

I hope so, I just wanted to make the point that edge roaming just doesn't affect people traveling to a foreign country, and I didn't even know I was roaming on Canada's expensive data network till I got a bill. It was only $20 extra so not a hard lesson.

YES! Software updates are for all iPhones, iPods, whatever...REGARDLESS of when you buy it. Apple is not going to release a software update for something you buy on a Monday, buy not let people who bought their products on Tuesday install it. Software updates are for everyone! Not for only half of potential owners out there.

I think iPhone G2 will have enough difference with its hardware features (3G and/or GPS) that most software advances will continue to earlier devices. Due to EDGE vs. 3G, I think the WiFi iTunes Store may be available to 3G devices but not to EDGE.

I'm waiting for a Pages Editor and Keynote Playback App. Apple needs to hit the business sector.

No, it's not the same. EDGE stays on. You just won't slip onto some other non-unlimited roaming EDGE service you get billed by the kilobyte or something. Like you're from Cleveland but checking e-mail over WiFi from a cafe in Lyon, but there's EDGE around and the iPhone thinks the EDGE is stronger signal, so roams over to it and you get a $100 whack on your bill for that photo of your youngest child picking his nose with a pencil.

If you are on ATT (or other, like EU, partner carrier in future) you have EDGE unlimited data plan, turning EDGE roaming off is all you need. If it won't roam, you have no fear of extra charges. If people want to turn EDGE off period so they won't accidentally access EDGE services with unlocked voice-service-only iPhones, I wouldn't expect Apple to provide that feature for you -- I think they'd be okay with you getting smacked with a $4,500 data bill.

30th Sept. is Sunday on this planet. No update on Sunday. Bet on tomorrow, Tuesday the 25th. If there's some fixable hitch, bet no later than Friday the 28th. But no weekend updates.

Only way I can see they'd release it today is because they update the iTunes Store on Tuesdays and they might rather have the WiFi Store out first for iPhones rather than try and do the update to the iPhone and the Store on the same day and get traffic-smacked.
