3G to Edge

People don't seem to understand that when you switch from 3G to EDGE on any phone you drop the call. The two are two totally different ways of making a call.

Edge is more like an traditional call, whereas 3G is more like a VOIP call.

The problem is that the Iphone has poor 3G reception... so it has to switch to EDGE more often than other phones.

*** Heres a workaround till apple does something about it ***
TURN 3G OFF unless you are going online, you will have a much better experience with the phone and your battery will last longer

I don't like doing this considering I just paid $300+ for a new 3G phone that is supposed to work.... but sometimes you have to do things to get by until they fix it... and compensate us for it

3G signal is still crap, but mine now switches very quickly to Edge. If I only have one bar of 3G, it switches, within seconds, to Edge. This didn't happen before the update. Maps does seem faster. The lag is back in contacts!
For me the lag was still there in contacts for 2.0.1.

Does NOT fix 3G issues :-(

I installed the v2.0.2 update hoping that this would resolve my ongoing/persistent issues. No luck.

When I turn 'on' the 3G network, when 3G service is lost, I get NO SERVICE indicator and have no phone service. I have to manually turn off the 3G network to get back up and running (with Edge). Simply doesn't work. I don't even bother with 3G and run with either WiFi or the slower Edge network.

Still, very, disappointed...

Did my update which was uneventful. I don't notice much difference but contacts are faster at present. 3G bars anywhere between 2 and 5 (never went above 4 before but I've never had connection issues or dropped calls here in Toronto so not really concerned about that). Edge is a full 5. I'm assuming the next update will further address the connection issues I guess.

I have switched to the nokia e71 (previous 1st gen and 3g user). I still have the 3g however to support my coworkers (who all have them) so I'll definitely provide a Chicago opinion tomorrow. I'm expecting 3g coverage will still suck and the people I'm on the phone with will still complain about the ambient noise and voice quality issues.

anyone have an opinion on returning it? Im still on at&t, much happier but not sure if $320 or $495 (counting $175 term fee) is a justified to have the 3g as a backup device..or sell it when the dev team cracks it -- b/c surfing the web on the toilet is totally my favorite feature. opera mini doesnt compare... then again I could get iPod touch and accomplish the same thing...

/kind of off topic.
/sorry

Please fix:

1) Keyboard
2) Contacts
3) Make it realize when 3G is around so I dont have to go into airplane mode then out to make it realize 3G is available.

ugh.

Im my apartment in the middle of manhattan, still no 3G. It doesnt appear quicker in anyway, settings and contacts still take a while to load...dissapointing

There is a new icon next to the BlueTooth indicator. It looks like a phone handle with two rows of dots. 4 at top and three below. I'll take shot and post it.

Either this is totally incorrect or it just applies to the iPhone. My 8525 does not drop calls when leaving 3G coverage areas. It is at least possible to use the GSM for the phone call and the 3G radio just for data, also.

Also,

I noticed some empirical changes with the 2.0.2 update, but it did not correct my dropped call/reception problem fully; kinda changed the spots a little.

It still doesn't not perform as well as my original iPhone did, even with 3G disabled.

Here is a pic. Look top right.

Up here in Canada...

Four of my close friends have a 3G, and not one of us has had any issues with 3G. I have yet to hear of someone in Canada, in a city centre, having issues with their connection. I consistently have 5 bars... in Toronto. I know it may be software on the phone side, but AT&T may have a large part in these issues too.

Please realize this people:

Judging by peoples experiences, this update likely was not the update mentioned that will fix the reception issues. This was liekly just to fix a few minor bugs as the update mentioned. I think we'll be seeing the reception problem fixed in 2.1 next month.

This update DRASTICALLY improved the Google Maps application (more specifically, the ability to lock on to your posistion with a real GPS signal, as apposed to the "General Area Blue Circle" that would appear most of the time.)

I'm assuming this is all behind the scenes bug fixes for true turn-by-turn voice GPS applications, such as the one coming from TomTom.

Also, didn't Apple release a new CoreLocation API recently allowing better usage of the GPS such as direction, speed, etc?

Everything seems to be falling into place; I don't know about anyone else but I really believe a TomTom GPS-app will make this phone unbeatable.

Yep. Using GPS in my apartment was pretty much non-existent. Now I can get a lock and pretty quick too.

Faster Data?

I think the data speeds on GPRS/Edge fly now, an improvement on the Optus network in Australia. Anyone else?

Speaker volume reduced?

Is it just me or did the max speaker volume get reduced after updating? Somehow my ringers don't sound as loud as before :/
