People don't seem to understand that when you switch from 3G to EDGE on any phone you drop the call. The two are two totally different ways of making a call.

I switch from the 3G to EDGE networks while on a call everyday on my way home from work. I've never dropped a call. I'd say I'm in the 98% Steve J. was talking about.

I notice significantly faster EDGE data speeds

nationalgeographic.com loaded in 35 seconds for me over EDGE (using iphone 3g)

as opposed to the 59 seconds Apple stated at WWDC

that's a massive improvement.

Hmm...you sure you were on EDGE? EDGE, 3 bars, 55 seconds to load that site just now.

Well I got 28 seconds over 3G.
BUT my 3G signal is still non-existent and the first call I tried to place after the update failed!!!
God this phone is so frustrating.:mad:
Most everyone I talk to will now NOT switch because they think that the phone is crap and are all going to chip in and get me a verizon phone that I have to carry around to actually make and receive calls.

i see a huge difference in the mail.app. before..the phone would only seldomly "check every 15 minutes" now it takes so much less time to connect to my email account and grab the messages. also the 3g bars seem more realistic-as in not 5 bars...all of a sudden no bars...but instead i have 2 bars...

What happens to program files during a restore?

I am just downloading the update now I will do install in a few days, question does anyone know since the amount of programs is different in iTunes than what's on my iPhone, how will it restore the program files after the update?

I am hoping it won't install the one's I no longer have, I wish iTunes would sync that correctly, I mean have the same programs on the iPhone that are in iTunes app section, what's the purpose of syncing anyway.

EDITED; I think I found my answer if I looked more in iTunes is has the correct number of apps checked that are on my iPhone even though they are still in the app section of iTunes they are synced correctly..

Oh, thanks in advance for your reply

iPhone 2.0.2 Firmware Upgrade Problems

I tried downloading and installing the 2.0.2 firmware for my iPhone (original) but I am getting errors and every time I try to restore I get an error. This has never happened to me before, and I've had my iPhone since October 2007.

I'm having the same issue. I keep getting a -19 error, whatever that is. Are the Apple servers just overloaded right now?

I just updated my iPhone 3G and, while I don't know what else is changed, I can tell you that WiFi performance seems hugely improved. I've got a 10 mb/s fiber connection -- on my old iPhone 2G I would clock around 2.5 - 3 mb/s on a speed test, on the iPhone 3G with 2.0.1 I would clock around 4.5 - 5 mb/s, now after updating to 2.0.2 I'm consistently clocking 7.5 mb/s.

Okay, here's what I see so far in terms of signal integrity:

3G reception does NOT appear to be improved at this point (and yes, I am one of the "2%" problem children). Oddly, my EDGE reception DOES appear to be better off---5 bars consistently where I was getting 3-4 before. I've also noticed that the one time I did see a 3G signal, I switched over from 3G to EDGE at around 2 bars, rather than "No Service".

But have you tried getting 3G coverage with a comparable phone on the same network? I have a feeling that this 2% figure are merely people who are not in a strong enough signal area. as we move to an increasingly wireless world, we need to realize wirless is inherently A CRAPSHOOT!

And your located solidly in a 3G area, where there are no large terrain masses, buildings, etc?

I noticed this too. Safari also seems more stable.

Backups taking way too long STILL

I haven't installed this latest firmware package, but my original iphone still takes 45 minutes to sync because of the backup process. Seriously, fix this.

Faster software still same bad reception

This update def made the software much much faster as it's responding faster with the keyboard, safari, and most important the phone feature. I'm experiencing same horrible reception and ACCTUALLY WORSE wifi. I've tried out a couple different wifi spots that I usually use and the bars seem to be lower by like 2 bars. I have the 16gb black and I took off the invisibleshield I had on it and the casing right next to the silent button is CRACKING. For people who have the black iPhone clean it very well and hold it up to the light and you can see where there are cracks because it bends the light.

All these comments regarding a snappier interface remind me of the last update.

I'm pretty sure it'll start to lag in a few days.

errr

install the latest firmware.

Then whinge.

Too avoid the LONG backup times, first sync your phone when you first plug it in. It will ask to backup, cancel the backup and it'll complete your sync. Now THEN update your firmware, it won't backup. So you skip the step

15 minute update from start to finish.

3G is the same speed.

No difference in screen brightness.

Placebo effect is running ramped on this forum.

I installed the v2.0.2 update hoping that this would resolve my ongoing/persistent issues. No luck.

When I turn 'on' the 3G network, when 3G service is lost, I get NO SERVICE indicator and have no phone service. I have to manually turn off the 3G network to get back up and running (with Edge). Simply doesn't work. I don't even bother with 3G and run with either WiFi or the slower Edge network.

Still, very, disappointed...

Happened to me in NYC. Called ATT and they said it was their fault because they were doing maintenance on the towers. Said they completed maintenance, and it works fine.

i can't get this software update to work. itunes gave me an error (unknown error - code 9) and then told me that the phone was stuck in recovery mode. it has done this three times now. i'm not too sure what to do next.
