Here is a pic. Look top right.

Your showing of NO bars is normal , by that I mean thats what I am used to seeing here in Albany NY, I can drive a mile down the road and BAM have 5 bars. Sitting here typing this , I have NO bars but 3G, my sons 8525 4 bars.

Apple either pushed this device out the door with barely any testing and coding not thoroughly tested or the hardware inside is NOT doing what its supposed to .

I am so tempted to just sell mine on eBay but I know as soon as I do they'll fix all the screw ups

Update my 1st Gen 16GB iPhone to 2.0.2 via itunes no problem (Mac OS X) and everything is working great so far.

Two things I have noticed.

1. The backup works OK now (instead of 7 hours and only getting to about 15%, its now 10 mins). Thats with about 30 applications.

2. Applications install quicker via itunes.

BEST ADVICE FOR IPHONE 3G OWNERS...

Return your phone to the Apple or ATT store for immediate replacement.

Since only 2% of iPhone 3Gs are affected, that pretty much narrows this down to a hardware problem like a bad chipset. Even if Apple fixes the problem through software, most likely Apple's software solution is probably going to slow down the phone slightly to compensate for Infineon's bad chipsets and memory that fails to meet spec.

I would not under any circumstances settle for a software quick fix for what is obviously a hardware problem.

By the way, no, I don't have an iPhone 3G, but I do have an iPhone 2.5G and don't have this problem nor would I accept a quick fix software update for such a problem.

My opinion is that Apple should recall the affected phones and probably already knows the affected serial#s already. For a phone this expensive, I think Apple's response is quite poor and I say that as a lifelong Apple fan & Mac user since 1987.

Not a bad view, however with Apple releasing this device in so many country's at once, and seeing how apple does not say what there updates are and labels them as "Bug Fixes" do you really think they have control or know the serial number range of hardware problem devices ? Also if they did somehow release the serial number range, and the fact that in articles first posted about the company that's making these devices has or had poor quality control procedures, can you imagine the stampede at the Apple and AT&T stores to swap out iphones?

Since switching to Apple more than a year ago, it seems they stay in the land of "Denial" until it escalates so high, then they say, gee think we should fix this ?

People don't seem to understand that when you switch from 3G to EDGE on any phone you drop the call. The two are two totally different ways of making a call.

Edge is more like an traditional call, whereas 3G is more like a VOIP call.

The problem is that the Iphone has poor 3G reception... so it has to switch to EDGE more often than other phones.

*** Heres a workaround till apple does something about it ***
TURN 3G OFF unless you are going online, you will have a much better experience with the phone and your battery will last longer

I don't like doing this considering I just paid $300+ for a new 3G phone that is supposed to work.... but sometimes you have to do things to get by until they fix it... and compensate us for it

This certainly shouldn't happen. I've had 3G phones on all 5 UK networks. The only one which drops calls on a hand-off between 2G and 3G is "3" and that's because they don't actually own the 2G network and it roams onto Orange.

I had a SE K800 on o2 3G two years ago which always showed full reception at home on o2 3G. Wind forward two years and my iPhone struggles to get two bars. The fact is, as far as I can see, the reception on the iPhone is poor compared to other 3G phones. I really, really hope they can sort this through software, because I can't see millions of units being recalled.

Normally in San Diego where I got great reception on my original EDGE iPhone. Currently in Connecticut, bought a 3G here, and had decent but not amazing service since I've been here. I hear that's because AT&T is just awful in New England.

3G feels MUCH faster. Even with one bar, sites that would normally time out are loading in seconds. The Facebook app is also working great. Haven't dropped to EDGE yet.

GPS is also faster. I've only tried it indoors, but it got the estimated blue circle fix much quicker than usual.

Backups are still pretty slow, but probably because I've been canceling my backups since I got the thing.

I'll make some calls on it when its not 7:30am and write again. The only time I've had dropped calls was on a subway, so hopefully this update gave me amazing concrete-piercing superantennas. :D

UPDATE: Just tried it near a window; got a GPS fix almost instantly. I approve of 2.0.2.

I agree but...why return for a replacement? I returned my 3G the other day, for a refund. Went back to using my old iphone that works much better. I'll keep reading and if I'm ever sure they fixed it I may buy another but it seems like most of the phones are bad.

UK iphone 3g trouble sending email

Hey since i purchased my Iphone 3g i have never been able to send email when i have 3g reception even when i have full signal, does anyone else have this problem? does anyone know how to resolve this? as soon as i then connect to my home wifi the mail sends straight away. cheers spencer.

I can almost guarantee that no 3G fix was included. I live in the middle of Los Angeles 91601. Lot's of 3G in my area. I can't get 3G in my house, and still have problems getting it outside my house.

Last week I was on a remote island in Hawaii (off of Maui), and 3G came in great. Go figure.

I love turning off 3G when I get home, and turning on 3G when I get to work. Only 47 months left!

Actually, 3g coverage on Oahu and Maui is pretty significant. Speed isn't great but ok (~768k down, 100k up) most of the time. Only goto edge in old concrete bldgs.

Updated mine last night, so far so good. Will try it out a few days to see if I notice any change. I'm sure I will, why would they release updates otherwise?

My phone still does "the dance" when trying to post on this forum when you type a message. So freakin' annoying.

Never mind all the glitzy 2.0+ features and bug-fixes - howzabout they actually fix the music/video playcount increase bug that has been present since firmware 1.0 and STILL hasn’t been fixed!? Sheesh…

Most of my Smart Playlists rely on “last played” or “play count” and suchlike, and if the iPhone doesn’t register what’s been played when it syncs with iTunes (9 times out of 10), then none of my Smart Playlists get updated!
Not very smart then… :(

Almost makes me want to go back to using my old iPod 5G!

I sometimes get this, its because of the smtp servers. When on 3G your primary smtp probably won't work, so it could be stuck trying to connect to that smtp and never get to the at&t-3g smtp. Try inactivating your primary smtp, and then sending. If that works, you may also try switching the 2 - making at&t primary. But you may get the reverse problem when you're on wifi.

Hell i hate doing anything to my phone anymore just because it takes a freaking hour everytime just to do a backup! Can we please fix this somehow?!

I would love for it to only take 1 hour. Mine takes 3 plus. Any word on the backup issue being fixed?

observations

I'm on my 3rd iphone 3G. At this point, I think there's been a software issue.

My first phone... after getting a bad backup... never quite recovered. Could not get email to work properly even after a couple sim swaps, freeze-ups, multi-hour backup times, etc.

Second phone, everything went smooth... after I reset up the phone as a new phone, and dumped my backups for a fresh one that hadn't been created on the previous phone. Then, just when I was celebrating that everything now worked properly... perfect email functionality... no freeze-ups... short backup times... etc. I noticed horizontal lines on the display. :-(

My third phone in a week... gave me problems too, until I deleted all backups and re-setup the phone as a new phone. Initially... since my second phone was working perfectly except for the the horizontal lines in the display... I figured I could just use/restore from it's backup on the third phone. WRONG! After I wiped it clean, deleted the previous backups, set it up as a "new" phone... re-set up all my settings, apps, etc. I also turned off the auto-syncing and only do that once a day manually... everthing seemed fine.

Ever since... my phone has been completely stable with no problems at all. Seems that backups from one phone and restored to another... simply don't work out well. Seems... once you have a bad backup... itunes tries to do a complete backup every time instead of only the changed files. Now, my backups only take about 2-5 mins.

This 3rd phone's stability has only been since Friday... but I'm hopeful I finally got a "good" one, and a stable install. ;-)

Update went quickly - Contacts seem quicker and I may (or may not) have an extra bar of 3G in most places.

The one odd thing I notice is occasionally (usually after the phone has been charging overnight) I can no longer access anything via 3G - just hangs. If I switch 3G off and then back on - it works like a charm.

Anyone else notice this behavior?

All this morning I've been getting a steady "No Service," which I have not seen until today sitting at the same desk I sit at every weekday since I had the 3g.

This notion that the problem, whatever it is, affects some units and not others, is entirely unsupported by the evidence. The 2% figure, if accurate, obviously does not mean that 2% of phones are broken, but rather that the problem affects approximately 2% of total users. There is a great deal of evidence that some of this is geographical; especially that users in very densely covered areas are the most affected.

Also, there is no reason to speculate that a software workaround will make the phone "slower" somehow. Most software workarounds for hardware problems are never even noticed by users.

Well, this update fixed a very real bug for me on my first generation iPhone. My audio out through the dock port had stopped working. Did not work with my radio in my car or my speakers at work. That really sucked. As of this morning, all is working fine again.

3G Connectivity in Washington, D.C.

My 3G internet connectivity is terrible now. It's so slow that my iphone goes to sleep before pages load. I'm not sure what's wrong? Is anyone else having this problem? I know some people in D.C. are having the same issue.
