iPhone (First Generation) and the 2.1 upgrade – Unlock?

Thats a known bug from 2.x firmwares. You need to wait until a new PwnageTool/QuickPwn is released so that you can jailbreak it.

Once you've done that you can download "bossprefs" via cydia. This has an option to "fix directory permissions", which will solve this problem.

Setup the email account again. Then sync to iTunes. You should see a duplicate. Perhaps you can delete then.
Otherwise, create the account on the computer then sync it under the "Info-Mail Account" option.
 
When the latest Pwnage allows for 2.1 jailbreak/unlock will flashing the baseband again be harmful/possible? I am on 2.0.1 unlock on a few 2G that I'm selling.
 
Well, I decided to try to downgrade firmware. It isnt working. I tried to downgrade to 2.0.1, and I got error 6 (I did downgrade to 7.7.1 iTunes). I was able to restore to stock factory 2.0.1, so it isnt bricked, but I cannot get custom firmware to take for some reason. Did i miss a step in downgrading iTunes?

EDIT: Downloaded a fresh 2.0.2 and used QuickPwn. I have it back now. All is well. Email is fixed. Now if I restore from a backup, will I mess it up again? Eh... nothing there I cant just put back manually... why risk it. Now to update to 2.1 🙂
 
Same happened here.

I downloaded 2.1, resotred it, and all worked until!

Until it went to the Apple logo screen, then it would vibrate every few seconds, but nothing else.


Just finished downgrading, and not to reinstall 8.0 and attempt to upgrade again.
 
Hey guys I have a small problem. My buddy gave me his 2G Iphone to unlock but I ran to some problems (Unlocked 2 iPhones b4).
I plugged it and it restored to 2.1 through iTunes 8. Then I tried to run Pwnage but then I realized that there is no 2.1 ipsw!

What can I do to unlock a 2.1 through Itunes 8? Will a new version of Pwnage be released?
 
Just updated both my iPhone and my wife's. Both were unlocked to 2.0.2. The upgrade to 2.1 went great for both. Still Unlocked!!🙂

Well after reading almost the whole thread, I would appreciate if someone put it clear to me in plain English if it is safe for me to update to 2.1. Here's my status:

- I still have iTunes 7.7 on my Mac and don't plan to update soon (finally, never rushing for upgrades pays off!)

- My 2G iPhone is jailbroken, unlocked and running on pwned 2.0.2 firmware. I've been using pwnage tool for this several times before but alas, there's still no PT for 2.1

- I'm downloading the 2.1 IPSW through the web as I write this, rather than have iTunes download it (I just prefer to have control of everything when updating!) 😛

So... does all this mean I can just select my fresh, virgin 2.1 IPSW, set to "Restore" on iTunes, and that would be it? Or should I do something else? I'm about to go for a trip overseas and can't risk losing the unlock. And I don't really care about jailbreak apps anymore either - I just want a phone that doesn't suck in performance.

Alternatively, if you can access the iphone via SSH and know what you're doing, 😀 you can try this command:

chown -R mobile:mobile /var/mobile/Library/Mail

Basically the same thing that Bossprefs does, but in an uglier fashion. 😛

Now this brings me another question - are there any "legal" apps that allow you to do SSH on the iPhone? (The only ones I know come from jailbreak sources)...

You cant install it in itunes unless you have 8.0. all you do is hit update and if you had an unlocked 2.0 then you will keep your unlock but loose your jailbreak.
 
well, I am completely fixed now. I am on 2.1, unlocked, but not jailbroken. I. Fact I am posting from my iPhone right now 🙂

I can live with that.

All i did was hit update.

I'm on a mac with itunes 8. My phone was on 2.0, jb and unlocked and I had updated to 2.01 then 2.02 just using itunes update.

So my phone was on 2.02 unlocked but not jb prior to 2.1, I hit update in itunes 8, the phone is still unlocked, no problems.

another happy camper here.

my iphone was pwned from 1.1.4 to 2.0

I had updated to 2.0.1 and then later 2.0.2 using pwnage and itunes 7.7

this morning i plugged in my unlocked, jailbroken 2.0.2 iphone into itunes 8.0 and hit 'update' and let it do it's business.

now I am unlocked but not jailbroken, everything seems fine :apple:

i have a 2g phone.

tried this and i was able to jailbreak my 2.1 iphone. with the use of diskaid, i manually deleted from the cache of the iphone all the mobile installation files to make cydia and installer appear on screen. i did not download a delcache.

no apple or pineapple on reboot screen though. i wonder what i did wrong? but, everything else seems fine.

Could someone possibly expain to me how I would go about updating iPhone to 2.1?

I have downloaed the IPSW but not really sure what I am doing lol.

Also is it going to be possible to keep stuff like my text messages on the iPhone?

iTunes 8 breaks Pwnage.

I would say dont ever update anything if you jailbreak your iPhone and use 3rd party apps / unlocked until the iPhone Dev Team have said its OK or have released a new version of Pwnage or some sort of patch that fixes it.

I'm not too fussed about jailbreaked apps, as I dont really use them anymore. If I downgrade to itunes 7.7.1.11 can I upgrade to 2.1?

Maybe, but if you are having trouble upgrading your jailbroken iPhone I would say get the original 2.0 file (or if you still have it on your computer use that) and restore to that before upgrading to 2.1 and you will be fine.

Although, if your iPhone is unlocked it will probably be relocked again after this. If you do need your iPhone to be unlocked, wait until the Dev Team work something out.

To all that care, I can confirm a successful upgrade to 2.1 on a pwnaged iPhone (1st gen) which had been running 2.0.

This is what I did.

1) Updated iTunes to 8.0 (as well as quicktime and everything else software update asked me to update)
2) Clicked "check for updates" in the iTunes 8 dropdown menu at the top
3) iTunes told me that a new 2.1 version is available. Do I want to update?
4) Attached iPhone to Mac.
5) I said Yes to update iPhone firmware and let iTunes 8 do its thing normally.
6) It took around 40 minutes between the iPhone backing up, and updating firmware, etc.
7) iPhone then was running 2.1 absolutely fine. Google maps, Genius, iPod youtube, email all works fine and contacts, apps and emails all remain as you left them. I cannot speak to text messages since I send none. Remember that Genius on iPod wont work until you sync your phone again after updating the firmware.

I do not have a need for jailbreaking, so if you do, this isn't for you since I hear Jailbreaking is disabled doing this. But if you have a pwnaged iPhone 1st gen, running 2.0, you don't need to do anything funny such as upgrading to 2.0.1 and then 2.0.2 or some sort of hack. Just let iTunes 8 do its thing.

you will have to do what i did. upgrade to a 2.0 first unlock the 2.0 then you can just update normally to a 2.1
 
Ok, so if I plug my 1.1.4 iPhone into my spare pc with itunes 7.7 installed, follow the instructions and flash up to 2.0, and then connect it back into my main PC with iTunes 8 and update it to 2.1, will this work OK? Would it restore the backup with text messages and stuff onto the restored and updated iPhone?

You need to just get pwnage tool and the 2.0 firmware and the 2.0 custom fimware once you do that you will need to unlock the 2.0. AFTER YOUR 2.0 IS UNLOCKED YOU CAN UPGRADE TO 2.1. if you go from 1.1.4-2.1 directly your #$%ED😱
