my first impressions: the screen is amazing, contact syncing works great, the ipod functionality is great

after 6 hours of using the iphone:

I'm already feeling like I have a hand cut off versus my BlackBerry Curve. Functionality wise its a step down right now. So many good 3rd party APPLICATIONS (not web crap) that I can use on my curve like multi-platform IM clients, Opera Mini, IRC clients, all sorts of other stuff.. and the curve is also small and light and takes great photos that are amazingly easy to email to people. Even the simplest stuff on the iPhone is TOO SIMPLE. It's so simple that I really can't tolerate not having customization on some of these applications, like - where's the camera configuration??

Right now i'm really frustrated, and I just broke a T-mobile contract for this phone. They said there's a 14 day return policy at the apple store but I have no idea whether I can get my t-mobile number back and my t-mobile account back... this sucks.
Now I know why they call it 'crackberry'. :D :p

iPhone can't be perfect for everyone. Good luck on getting your old account back, and thanks for the post. :)

Hey,

I will NOT buy until winter!

I have to keep saying that in the hopes of keeping my willpower :)

These great reviews are not helping me any! I think I'd better leave my credit card at home when I check out the iPhones on display tomorrow.

Just surrender. You'll be a lot happier. :)
After AT&T ran out of 8 GB, went to the Apple Store. I feel so much better now.
:p

wow the cingular salesmen never told me i had to extend my contract another two years. Kind of uncool on there part...now the cingular woman wont give me the iphone support number for att anybody got it?? she tried to give me 1800 my apple

Everything works fine ( I can see my buddy lists, etc.) until I get to the point of sending a message. Everywhere on the site, all items that need to be sent use a "SEND" grahical button that you can click. But when composing a message, you usually hit "RETURN" (when you are in a non-iPhone setting). But when you type your message in iPhone, there is no "RETURN" key as there usually is. For example, when typing an URL in Safari in iPhone, a "RETURN" key appears to actually "send" what you have typed in. But when at the Meebo site in the message pane, no "RETURN" key appears in your keyboard, so you can't actually "send" what yoi have typed. A shame, since everything else works, but just the very last step. Hopefully this will be worked out.

Thanks for doing this TitoC. Hopefully meebo will address this issue by adding a "Send" button on the chat window for you to press.

Are you actually saying that you want the video to be stretched out to fill the screen? You don't mind looking at distorted/stretched out objects?

Surely the way the iPhone works with cropping or playing at correct aspect ratio is much preferred than having a distorted video playback I would've thought.

To be honest I can't tell the difference, using VLC, between 4:3 stretched to 16:10 and 16:9 stretched to 16:10. All we're talking about is using the extra vertical real estate on the iPhone to make a larger viewing area. I'd far rather have a vertically stretched image than a zoomed one that cuts off the sides. Even in Apple's iPhone demos, where they use cars, you can't read the edges of the opening credits because they're cut off. An altered aspect ratio or clipping, I know what I'd rather have.

Seems most people don't like this kind of alteration, but for me it's one of the main reasons why I use VLC so I can get a full screen no matter what I watch. I barely notice any distortion, my eyes just adjust to whatever I'm watching. Everything is altered in proportion anyway so all your reference points change which is why I see little difference. People are thinner, but then so is everything else so it looks normal. Or at least that's how my eyes perceive it.

If you insist on viewing as originally intended (16:9) then zooming options don't really affect you, but for those who do want the movie to fill the screen I don't think zooming cuts it. Like I said, even in Apples demos you have problems reading things because it has to zoom so much to fill the screen vertically.

EDIT: We're coming close to derailing the thread so I'll leave it there. The iPhone looks awesome, including the video this was just an option I'd like. I'd like to ask those with an iPhone how WiFi affects the battery life in standby...?

Wow it sounds like everything is perfect with these new phones which is good news.

I can see how the iPhone will become Apple's new focus at this point. The personal computer market is stagnant and the MP3 player market is getting to be the same way, but their is a lot of potential for a new kind of phone.

It kind of sucks that the Mac will be playing second fiddle to this device, but Apple is a corporation and has share holders to please so they have no choice but to focus on growing markets.

I went to the Apple Store as part of a camera crew. I didn't have to wait in line at all, but was admitted immediately and got to play with the phone before a lot of other people. It was all for the sake of getting the shot. ;-) The thing is truly amazing. I'm quite impressed and want to buy one.

The one issue I saw was that one phone wasn't getting any signal from at&t, and also that there was enough of a bandwidth drain that pages loaded slowly in safari, even on wifi.

You can see what we shot (with some lame garageband loops) on youtube. Search iPhone Launch- Salt Lake City

Nice segment.

Thanks for sharing.

Just got mine at the St. Louis Galaria, walked right in at about 11:30pm walked up to a mac sales agent and asked for an 8gb iPhone and in less than 5 Min I walked out of the store with one!!!!!

I looked at the online status indicator for the St. Louis stores, and both (West County and Galleria) have some in stock still. I'll be test driving one in the store today... but alas! I still have one more year on my U.S. Cellular contract...

Just want to post here as well, since some people might not see my posting in another thread.

Howardforums is reporting that you CAN take your iPhone SIM and put it in another phone and it will work. I believe this has already been confirmed here. But they are also saying that the data plan will still work on the non-iphone.

Edit: Forgot the URL:

My advice regarding smudges is to try using the phone in shade, not in direct sunlight (it doesnt matter what type of screen you use, direct sunlight will reveal all the crap on it). This will always make smudges less visible.

Also, keep your hands clean by washing them frequently with soap. Oily residue on your hands not only adds visible streaks but the oils secreted naturally also put wear on the surface of any electronic device.

Perhaps the emergence of more multitouch devices will encourage people to improve their hygiene! Part of the reason people get sick as often as they do is because they've touched hands with someone carrying an infection who doesn't wash their hands frequently.

It would be cool if the iPhone could stream internet radio through iTunes over EDGE.

Ummmm, is that possible? Anybody want to check?

My iphone review:

When i first saw it i thought the movements, the pinching and scrolling, wouldn't be the hightlight, they would just become something done daily and the functionality would be the highlight. But let me tell you just using it is such a great experience. The scrolling and everything works so seamlessly and is very impressive. I urge those that have not yet to just go try it.

i like the the phone but it leaves some stuff to be desired. Everyone know all the positive things, of which there are many so i won't touch on those. I just post where i had problems, maybe some of you can tell me if i'm doing something wrong.

The typing is not as bad as some people said before, i don't think that is that much of an issue. i am fastest with one finger.

syncing mail. with dot mac it syncs perfect. Other than that i have one gmail account and a bunch of pop 3 accounts. The dot mac account has a junk mail filter which the the gmail and pop 3 accounts do not. further more the dot mac actually syncs with my mail, it downloads the settings and sees what messages i have read and deleted and junked. The other accounts only port over my settings, which means they dowload all the messages in those accounts as new messages, it doesn't sync or recognize what i have already read in my mail, it just pushes all the email in the accounts to the phone, so i have to to sort through hundreds of emails if already read. and there is no junk function. Also i can see the emails in widescreen. nor can i change the font sizes. also i can't seem to change the order of my mail accounts.

Scrolling in webpages works good, but if you are on a crowded page up and down scrolling can be hard because it can't recognize what you are trying to touch. a scroll bar would be nice

Syncing video is a problem i don't know if it's becasue of the video i encoded which is all h.264 or the dimensions 700 pix at it's largest point, but so far i can only import videos i have bought off itunes not ones i'vd ripped. This is kind of a pain because that means i have to rip one for apple tv and one for the iphone. not something i want to do. Also i couldn't manually drag and drop but that maybe for the same reason.

I had more but i can't remember at the moment. the video and the mail i think are my biggest issues. And of course calendar to do i live by those and i will have to use notes or devise a different system to get it on my iphone, but i knew that before i bought it. i also couldn't promote the cities in my weather widget to get the order i wanted i had to delete what was there and input new cities. the battery life isn't that great, but maybe i've just been playing with it too much.:D If anyone can help me with the mail or video that would be greatly appreciated it.

i didn't buy a case but i realize it is greatly needed. I'm holding out for hte one i want.

anyone can post the photo which was taken by iphone cam ?

thx @@

This is taken in natural light without any house lights on so it's not that great...

Just bought one at the ATT store in VA

I just bought one at the ATT store in VA:) . They did not have it in stock but told me that it would be shipped to my home by Monday (although I think it will really arrive on Tuesday). Im good with that given that apple won't ship for 2-4 weeks according to their site...

I have to admit I am not big on first generation devices but the security guard at the ATT store said the thing was amazing...I AM SO PSYCHED TO PLAY WITH THIS THING!!:D
