MAN!... reading all of these posts makes me really want to go back to AT&T from T-Mobile. (AT&T really made us mad a few years back so we blew them off and are never going back.) If T-Mobile ever gets on-board, I'm gettin one in a second.:)

In five years yes, they will get on-board.

two thumbs up

I bought a 4GB model last night at an Apple store, they said they have 400.
place was full of people and three cops on duty. ANyways, unpacked it, signed up and it works amazing. I couldnt be more satisfied, I even managed to drop it onto the concrete from waist level ( doh!!) while showing a friend the google maps while holing my 2yr. old. it has a scuff on the metal, but didnt hurt a thing, this thing is amazingly sturdy. The screen is super sensitive nad multitouch really works great. I have also found a few tricks I think, playing around with different two and three finger swips it does all kinds of neat things. on maps, if you hold your two fingers an inch apart or so and tap the screen together it zooms out, and things like that.

AWESOME experience

Got in line at the Beverly Center in Los Angeles at 7pm. 35 minute wait in line, and I was home at 8PM. 15 minutes later I had set up my plan. Called out for the first time at 8:30pm.

Received my first call in at 9:30pm. "The email" arrived 10 minutes later.

I've been pretty much obsessively tapping on this thing ever since. I love my iphone.

Small quibbles:

no junk email folder; everything goes to the inbox, and is annoying to have to individually delete each junk email. No, I don't want viagra or a new mortgage!

Headphone jack is longer, so my plug to use my ipod with my aux jack in my car doesn't work. Is there an adapter available yet?

I'd like to remove the stock ticker from the menu screen and add a click for podcasts, or something that I'll actually use. There is space for 4 more buttons on the screen; how to we add links there?

Other than that, this thing is actually better than I expected. I get fairly good reception other than a few dead zones, and the keyboard is actually easier to use than the negative hype suggested.

Yay iPhone!

4 minute activation

Walked into my local AT&T this morning and purchased the 8gb iPhone with no waiting.

purchased: Sat at 10am eastern time
type of customer: New
credit check: pre-authorized
activation time: less than 4 minutes

No waiting. No hassle transaction. Just as it should have been for every customer.

I got mine at the Apple Store at Stoneridge Mall in Pleasanton, CA.

Got there after work at 4, line was down the mall entry way, outside and along an outdoor sitting area in front of a Macaroni Grill. I said, "daaamn" out loud, I was expecting a lot of people, but not THAT many. The Macaroni Grill employees were bitching about all of us standing there. Apparently, it never occurred to them that you have a bunch of people standing in a line for a few hours, who can't go anywhere around dinner time who'd probably pay top dollar for some grub and drinks. Instead of trying to make some dough, lets just complain. Lots of people walked by taking pictures and video.

One guy was in line behind me, you know, one of those guys who's "too cool". When Apple employees were coming by passing out water one of the managers (?) said, "You guys excited for 6?" She was just trying to be nice, though it was kind of hokey. Mr. Too Cool says, "no" with his back turned, you know, cause cool people only can act big when the person they're trying to be bad with can't see who had the big mouth. The manager just brushed off, while I made a comment about how only an idiot would stand in line like this for something they weren't excited about. Too Cool didn't have anything to say to that considering I was looking right at him and the whole line in my area was laughing. Overall, it was nice of Apple to have water for everyone and somebody was passing a bag of candy and treats from the Candy Shoppe in the mall. Whether this was Apple or a nice person in line, it was nice to see the line cohesion as lame as that sounds. People came up asking, "Is this the iPhone line?". I'd say, "No, this one is for Stones tickets, iPhone is on the other side of the mall". :p

Overall, it took about 30 minutes to get through the line and in and out of the Apple Store. Was really impressed with how the store personnel handled it. They seemed genuinely excited about what was going on though they had to run around like crazy for hours. Got it home, plugged it in and went through the iTunes activation. It froze the first time, then wouldn't let me in for another 3 attempts. Finally I got through without a hitch. Played with the "Slide to make Emergency Calls" thing while it activated. I made the mistake of immediately syncing all my iTunes music right after activation, so for 20 minutes I just stared at the "Syncing" screen. Put way too much stuff on the first time, so I went through and made an iPhone playlist with most of my music, with a few omissions of music I only listed to every once in awhile. Gave me a lot more room.

My first thought when I started using it was how cool the touch screen was and the fact that it just simply worked, which might seem odd. When I was in a SMS chat or tapping around, everything just worked. I found that oddly cool for some reason. EDGE was faster than I thought and didn't lag much as expected. Everyone I showed the landscape feature to was blown away, I showed my cousin how to zoom in on photos or pages and he had to do it a few times like he didn't believe he was actually doing it, or that the phone was reacting to his touch. When I got back on my PowerBook I was kind of annoyed at how inefficient a mouse was after using the touch screen. That wowed me a little bit. So far so good if you ask me, everything works really well, pretty seamless and quick. Screen is quite impressive, I know a lot of the specs have it around or near that of other Smartphones, but it looks so much cleaner, clearer and brighter.

I don't know what's with the reviewers talking about how bad the keyboard is. When the tutorials say you have to just trust it, they're right. I just start typing and it has around an 80-85 percent accuracy rate, and that's only after having it for less then 12 hours. If you're trying to painstakingly hit each and every individual key then yeah, it would be sort of annoying. But that isn't how you're supposed to do it.

I do have a few very minor grievances though.

_Firstly, what's the point of wallpaper if it's only in the screen you see when you're unlocking the phone or when a call is coming in? The wallpaper you set is for a screen you are on 5 percent of the time? Shouldn't the wallpaper be in the main home screen too? Maybe I missed something and that's possible. Would also be able to customize the colors of the bubbles in the SMS chat window. Again, maybe you can and I haven't found it yet.

Actually, those are the only real issue I have off the top of my head, which is extremely minor as far as the whole experience goes. Already dropped it once, ironically when I was thinking about how I had to be extra careful not to drop it. I haven't had a cell phone for the last couple of weeks, my last one broke and I wasn't going to get ripped by AT&T for a piece of crap with iPhone just around the corner. Reach in, pulled out my wallet and watched in horror as my iPhone came flipping out. Luckily it was only on carpet, got to freaking be careful, man. Overall I'm really impressed with the interface, efficiency and the ease of use. It's really an incredible innovation. No way in hell could one possibly go back to "other" phones. This thing is absolutely generations ahead of anything available out there. Just incredible if you ask me.

:apple:

i feel bad for all of those who are having activation problems. i activated as soon as i got home yesterday to avoid the rush. i was up and running in less than five minutes.

with that said, this is an amazing device. i'm usually the kind of person who get's buyer's remorse within two seconds of buying something, but not this time.

Loves:
  • keyboard
  • mail
  • safari
  • gesuring with photos and web
  • youtube is amazing

Gripes:
  • for $600 apple could have given us in-ear headphones and not the crappy iPod buds
  • couldn't connect to my home wi-fi network, but had no problems on others
  • speaker is a little weak
  • why can't i drag songs and movies directly to the phone without having to create a playlist and sync it? am i missing something?

all in all this is a fantastic device. revolutionary even.

Yay iPhone!

I'm totally jealous....STILL waiting for mine to finish activating. we are going on 20 hours now for activation :(

I went to the SoHo Apple store last night at about 11pm, there were roughly 200 people in there either playing with the iphone or on line waiting for one.

I fully expected to walk into a zoo, however Apple was totally prepared, they had approx 15 registers open as well as the mobile cashiers ready to ring you up via credit card and email you a receipt. Very well done Apple!

On to my activation, I got the dreaded we need more time to process your activation email. I decided to give AT&T a call and see if I could get this done quicker. I spoke with Jason who said that they arent used to the volume of phones all being activated at once so the system was back up in activations.

After chit chatting about the iphone and Apples stock prices he tells me he is going to try to 'push' through my programming. I dont know if this was possible or if he was trying to make me feel like things were in control but 15 minutes later I got the email stating I was activated.

Itunes immediately began downloading all of my ical appointments, my address book, as well as my email settings from mail. I was shocked how it just worked! No hassling which is why I always buy Apple products, the iphone found my wifi and wanted to join right away. I browsed around a bit on wifi and cached a few pages.

Then I switched to edge which was acceptable, by no means was it wifi but it was respectable. Id say yahoo loaded on wifi in 5 seconds where edge took 20.

SMS are the same as ichat. They are saved in conversation form so you can see what you texted and what the person responded. This is helpful having everything at one glance. Simple but elegant.

The ipod is brilliant that with the new headphones and the ability to double click the headphones to skip songs is s simple but excellent touch. Makes my 5.5 gen ipod look like a dinosaur.

Apple really hit this one out of the park, tis is such an elegant device and the lack of keyboard is not a factor if you can use a sidekick or palm keyboard you will get use to this in no time. The phone also begins to memorize names so as you type it suggests them for you. Its like T9 entering. It is elegant and the learning curve is really short.

Overall this device replaces all of my other devices and puts them all in one.
AT&T was on par with Apple customer service which I was worried about.

Meebo doesnt work as previously stated you can receive messages but cant send back. I remedied this by creating an email account just for my iphone for the time being.

Myspace, facebook, ebay and just about every other website I went to displayed with no problems.

The pinch feature to zoom on webpages is so second nature to me now that I did it on my palm screen.

Way to go Apple you stepped into a saturated market and set the bar for an elegant straightfoward simple device that does it all.

Kudos!

Envious!

Typing this from my new JesusPhone.

I purchased an 8GB model at the Apple Store in Norfolk.

I'm here in Virginia Beach and was curious as to AT&T's service phone coverage and call clarity.

I currently have T-Mobile but loose signal strength when I get inside my house.

How has AT&T coverage been if you have been out and about in Norfolk/Va Beach?

Also, since I loose the signal in my house, T-Mobile's work around was to forward the mobile number to my house landline. That way i'll receive the calls madeto my cell phone and I believe it doesn't detract from my minutes, but in any event, in playing around with the phone, does it allow you to forward calls from your mobile number to another number? I need to know because my location is the problem and not T-Mobile and/or AT&T. When I get in my car and drive down the street, I recieve more bars (better signal).

Thanks!

I just got the iphone last night, activated it this morning and was so excited to see it in action....then when I tried receiving calls, watching videos, listening to music, or changing ringtones a loud clicking noise occurs and drowns out the audio. I can barely hear anybody when I'm talking on it, and I've done everything I can possibly think of to fix it..but nothing works.

This sucks...Is anyone else having the same issue? This clicking noise is extremely loud (especially since I have my volume up all the way so I can try to hear people when they call)

Have you tried resetting your iPhone? If you still have the same problem after resetting, bring it back to the store - they should replace it straight away assuming they have them in stock.

Rod.

My only complaint so far is that is that it's difficult to enter case sensitive passwords with the Keyboard. It doesn't appear to show you the case when you type so it was frustrating to enter my WPA2 Password. Also the Settings > Enable Caps Lock doesn't appear to be working (could just be me doing something stupid). Also, the transmitter on this thing appears to be very strong. My PC speakers go nuts every couple of minutes when the iPhone is near. My SLVR didn't do this.

To enable Caps Lock, you got to double-tap on the shift key.

I found out in the iPhone User Guide:)

Deleting multiple messages

Say you have 25 spam messages in your inbox. Can you select them all and delete them at the same time, with one motion, or do you have to delete each one individually?

Still available in Opelousas, LA

After reading this thread, I was ready to get one, and the power went out today. So, we decided to go to the movies, and I thought, why not stop at the local AT&T store in Opelousas to test their demo unit. Then, I walked in on Saturday at 12:00 and jokingly asked "Do you have any iPhones left?" She looked at me and went, "Yes, sure we do." "The 8GB?" "Yep."

I couldn't believe it, told her to grab one for me, and I was in and out of the store in 10 minutes. I'm activating it now. The cashier told me that most of the hype had died down in their store around 9, and some people waiting in line were simply there to pay their bill, not get an iPhone. No waiting in a long line for me. :D

So, if you need one and live in the area, apparently there are a few left in Opelousas.

this phone is amazing! The keyboard is easy to use in my opinion. Just from playing around with it for less than 24 hours I can already type using two hands as the video on apple shows. You just have to trust the keyboard. I often make mistakes but just keep typing. It figures out the word your trying to spell and fixes itself. And it learns words that you type most. Very smart! Infact, this post is coming from my iphone. Edge is a lot faster than i anticipated as well. Great product. Worth every penny!

Is that true that spam filtering might require a significant amount of CPU power that the iPhone simply does not have? (Just a noobie question, I know). Otherwise, why was not it included in iPhone's mail? There aren't many things worse than getting offers of enlargement/reduction etc on your phone.

Played with one for 30min, didn't buy

Why people felt the need to line-up yesterday is beyond me. I went to my local Apple store around 3:00 this afternoon and they had plenty in stock.

I played with a demo model for 30+ minutes. The iPhone is VERY cool. Given all the demos we've seen from Apple, it worked as expected for the most part.

I made a call to my wife from the busy/noisy Apple Store (holding phone to head - no headphones), and I could hear her just fine. In fact, I had to lower the phone volume. She said I sounded great as well.

Web pages were easily readable. Zoom, stretch, scroll were all intuitive. Rendering was sharp. Nice!

Exceptions are as follows:

The UI experience: is inconsistent across applications. For example, with the photo app you can go from photo to photo by swiping left or right with your finger. The notes and calendar don't do that. Instead, notes has a left/right arrows at the bottom of each note. With the calendar, you can't quickly move to the next day by swiping, you have to instead go into month mode and select a day. Apple is usually better about this sort of thing.

The Keyboard: I don't care what anyone says, the keyboard is tricky. You can single finger easily enough, but if you want to double thumb, you're in for some training. I'm 5' 9" with an average build, and average hand size. I was typing letting autocorrect do it's thing ("trusting" it), and when I looked at the result... it wasn't even close to what I intended. I'm not saying this cannot be mastered, and obviously mileage will vary, but it's not a non-issue.

Application Crashes: this would happen from time to time. I could easily repro a crash by using google maps and zooming-into a building (in satellite view). It's a graceful crash... where you suddenly/unexpectedly are returned to the home screen. Most of the crashes that I observed where with safari. The other form was the ipod, where it'd stop playing music in the background for no apparent reason.

I assume all this will get fixed. Overall I liked the iPhone and want one.

Why I didn't buy

The reason why I didn't buy one was I don't how good the cingular/att reception is at my house. The ATT coverage map shows that it's covered no problem, but I can recall a couple years back that a contractor with cingular service couldn't make calls from my house. I know ATT made improvement to the network, but I don't know if they affected me.

I asked what the return policy would be if I didn't have reception at my house, and the Genius told me 10% restocking fee, and they couldn't tell me ATT's policy. Sorry Apple... this type of thing should be risk free to the customer. I left disappointed.

As it turns out, it was a good call on my part. When I got home my wife informed me that a couple of her friends which have cingular cannot get a signal at my house.

Now I'm REALLY disappointed.

Great.. but...

Friday morning at 7AM in Richmond, VA .. I was sure the line at the local AT&T store on Forest Hill was going to be long..

The wife woke me up with a leaky faucet in the tub. CRAP!! So I went to Lowes, got the part to fix that.. did the repair and headed out to AT&T about9:30.

No line whatsoever. So I came back home.. and took a nap.Got up at 1 pm and.. no line again... but one guy was mulling around. I knew what he was doing.. so I waited about 45 mins in the AC of my car. I finally got out and ask this guy if he was waiting for the iPhone. He said yes and I asked if he wanted to start a line. He said 'Let's do it!! Really nice guy as well!

So I went inside and asked the guard would he prefer us to start a line at. So.. the line was started about 2pm. I was the #2 guy. It was only about 4:30 until the line really began to move. There were a lot of talk at the back of the line, of course, about not having enough iPhones to take care of everyone. I think everyone came out okay, but of course.. when I got mine.. I didn't stick around to see. I flew home to check it out.

A few pissed off people came to try to pay their bill after 4:30 and they nicely shoo'd them away.(AT&T stores closed from 4:30 to 6 ). At about 5:30 they brought out drinks for everyone. They were exceptionally nice and asked anyone if they needed anything. One employee said she would have brought me a milkshake back when she went out to eat if I would have asked her. HaHa..

When they opened, they only let 5 people in the store at a time.
They had some technical snafus in the store but they were doing a good job at taking care of them. Kudos to the employees. They were great.

It was pretty hot, but all-in-all a good experience.

Okay... the iPhone itself... I think overall it is awesome. I had no problems with activation and was one of the lucky ones I guess. It went smooth and quick.

The only things so far that I have found annoying...

1) No custom ringtones. A $600.00 phone should definately allow me to add my own MP3/MIDI ringtones.

2) The keyboard backspace is a bit annoying at times and will go into auto-backspace and wipe out an entire line. This happened more times than I can count when trying to correct text.

3) I found that I have to have my wireless router on broadcast all the time for the iPhone to work. Most wifi devices that I have used, once you have the wifi connection setup, you can turn your router's wifi broadcast off ( for added security) and it still knows the connection is there. I found this to not be true with the iPhone. Once you turn your router's brodcast off. The iPhone looses the wifi connection to the device.

This is not really a beef, but an additional stylus would have been a nice added feature for people who don't have tiny fingers for the keypad. I can work with it though. I found precision placement of the fingertips is the key.

I did ask the saleperson what happens if I get the phone home and their is a problem. Can I bring it back to the store. Her answer was "No". You need to contact Apple.
So.. AT&T is just the vehicle for distributing the phone and the phone service.

Overall.. it is one SCHWEEET phone!!!
