While I wouldn't recommend it, due to the cost of this thing (a Nano would be a much better option plus you can get the Nike+), BUT it uses flash memory so jostling it wouldn't affect it like a iPod with a HDD.

so does nike plus not work with the iphone then?

Still have 83 minutes to go 'till I can get home to activate this thing (and I have not pressed the power button - am waiting until I get home. Driving me m-a-d ;) ). I only opened the packaging and looked over everything, but (as expected), the packaging for this device is simply jaw dropping. Much more so than the packaging of the 1/2 gen iPod (which blew everyone's socks off), the box is a very thick, hard printed cardboard (even foam padding inside - very nice touch). Thick hard plastic seat for the iPod, everything is jossle-proofed and seemingly indestructible from shipping mishaps. As I said I haven't turned it on yet, but it feels fantastic in the hand. Quite small as others have noted, and a great weight to it. I'm *so* glad Apple went with a brushed aluminum case, as it is 100x less suceptible to scratches (from the iPod line). The strip of polished chrome around the face of the iPhone is also very very classy, just enough to set off the glossy black face, but not enough to drive you nuts when it gets fingerprints (though I'm rather anal about that type of thing, and already have found myself wiping it). The headphone jack *looks* nice, being recessed (and takes lots of strain off the internal mechanism I'm sure), but the inability to use the jack with many standard headphones is rather offputting... Not a huge deal though. Dock is awesome (so glad they included it), though I wanted to buy another for work and they were out of stock. Apple.com it is. Also I requested an iTrip (or other FM transmitter) and was told none currently work with the iPhone. I'm sure this will also be remidied in the future. If ShieldZone would release an InvisibleShield for this puppy, I'd be all over it, but so far it looks VERY scratch resistant, which is awesomely great. I'm sure there will be some hairline scratches at some point, but hopefully not before I sell it for the next gen (here's to hoping for 3G and double memory!) - All this and I have not yet been able to turn it on (I will have the iPod cradled/charging when I first turn it on and through the activation process (obviously) in order to properly charge the battery). I assume most people have done this, fully charged then discharged their iPhones several times during the first few charge cycles (?). More to come once I have it activated (and I'm hoping there won't be problems porting from Verizon.. :( ).

iLounge's video accessory preview highlighted a number of headphone adapters to let you just stick a small extension onto pretty much any headphones and be able to use them with the iPhone. As cheap as $9 or so.

So far, this thing seems to have a lot of toy appeal (although I will certainly wait until the next iteration). Can it currently be plugged into a corporate context as a blackberry replacement?

To quote Steve Jobs, when asked whether AppleTV would someday feature HD movie rental downloads? He said "One never knows..."

As to the Blackberry compatibility? "One never knows..." but you can be sure there are a bunch of people working on this.

I seem to remember Rimm making an announcement about a VM client for their service coming out for other platforms at the end of 2007. Will it come out on the iPhone? One never knows... :apple:

i must have really bad luck. still no activation for me. i called at&t again and they had me thinking i would be up and running within a few minutes of being on the phone with them. i kept getting "i'm sorry for the delay, do you mind holding a few more minutes??" of course, i agreed. well, 30 minutes into the conversation, i get "our system just crashed, we will not be able to do anything until tomorrow morning, i'm sorry"

i really do have bad luck

i can't believe i am up this late 2 nights in a row over this thing!

I just contacted apple, I tired to activate my phone at 7:21 on Friday. Still not activated and they want me to wait 48 hours... This is absouluetly CRAZY!

WiFi: AT&T Network Amplifier?

Gentlepeople -- I have a real question, and I request a real answer from you knowledgeable blokes:

In the recent QA w/Jobs & Stephensen -- they discussed a technology that is upcoming from AT&T (and just released by t-mobile I believe) - that would boost or re-route cell signal thru wi-fi.

If iPhone had come out for Verizon, I would have gotten it already. My little pocket of the city I live in just doesn't happen to have good AT&T service, but great Verizon service.

If this wi-fi technology is realized -- I would get the iPhone immediately...

QUESTION: What is this technology they (briefly) speak of, how does it work, when will it be available for AT&T?

Thanks... :apple:

Macworld editors published this number to call if you're having activation problems:

(877) 419-4500

This is an AT&T number supposedly for iPhone-related problems.

As for anyone out there still having problems getting their phone up and running, AT&T has several numbers that you can call including a number—877/419-4500—that comes up in iTunes.

GAN, or General Access Network. Formally known as UMA, or Unlicensed Mobile Access:

I hadn't heard that AT&T would be doing something like this (as you mentioned, T-Mobile just launched their service, Hotspot@Home).

In one day this thing has already become an extremely useful tool for me...

They knocked it out of the park IMO.

Congrats APPLE!!:apple: :apple: :apple: :apple: :apple:

Is it just me or are AT&T Data/SMS plans a total ripoff? I have a sidekick now that I use to death every day. It's OK, but for $20 a month I get unlimited Data & Unlimited SMS! I sent a couple thousand a month so I don't want to pay ANOTHER $20 for unlimited sms if I get an iPhone that I'm already paying more for Data. Sheesh.

Currently I pay $65/mo for 1,500 anytime minutes w/ tmobile, unlimited data on my sk, and unlimited SMS

If I switched I'd be paying the $80/mo plan with only 900 anytime minutes, but free N&W, + $20 for SMS. Is the iPhone worth another $35/month?

a metro PCS customer would be saying the same thing.

verizon: saving about $20/month AND getting role-over
ATT (pre-iphone): saving about $20/month

so... other then that, YES it is worth it ;)

it's got about as much "toy" appeal as OSX... sounds like a Windows Mobile device and dell desktop would suite you well ;)

predictable.

Thanks. If the iPhone could actually seamlessly integrate as a bb replacement, then it could take away significant market share from RIM.

Does iphone safari support foreign language such as Chinese Word?

Reports indicate that the browser can display accented Latin, Greek, Russian, Chinese, Japanese, and Korean. Languages not yet supported include Vietnamese, Arabic, Hebrew, Hindi, Tamil, Thai. User interface and input are English only.

that number sucks. they basically give you generic information and tell you they can't do anything for you.yes, you get through right away, but you leave with no resolve.

call this number 877-800-3701

you will wait on hold before getting someone but they can activate your phone right then and there. i waited for about 30 minutes but after all the h#$& i have been through with this activation, it is worth it. i am FINALLY up and running.

Awesome engineering, not so awesome connectivity

I've never purchased a PDA/smart phone because I just never liked any of them. Never thought they were a good enough blend of organization tools with communication tools.

I knew the iPhone would be different and integrate well with my Apple computers. So, I walked out of the AT&T store with an 8g at 6:30 and had it activated by 7:30 (I had a 45 minute drive home).

Activation was trivial and flawless. I was already a Cingular/AT&T customer. Syncing with my Mac and iTunes was also flawless. Filled up the 8g in nothing flat.

Watched Chicken Little on it. Awesome quality movie. Because of the screen size it was much more enjoyable than my iPod video.

The whole finger gesture thing is such an awesome way to implement the UI. So intuitive and works flawlessly. Zooming maps, images, web sites is just plain trivial. I love the extra interface feedback how things kind of bounce when you flick them with your finger.

The apps are already better than what I have on the Razr so I'm content. I know Apple will keep rev'ing them and they'll get more powerful.

What I need from Apple is better wi-fi support. I have 3 of the latest Netgear wi-fi routers in my home with good signal in every room. The iPhone gets a 1 bar single everywhere and just can't maintain a connection. I've turned it off.

My next beef, I think I'm screwed. I purchased the Razr because it was rumored to be powerful enough to get a good signal where I live. We're just on the border for most carriers and Cingular was the strongest national carrier when I moved here a year and half ago. I can get Razr calls consistently at home. However, the phone needs to be fairly accessible to windows. IOW, not on the floor in your pocket  Anyway, the iPhone signal is much weaker. I went from 2.5 bars on the Razr to .5 - 1.5 on the iPhone. I have tested a couple of calls and I did receive them fine. Time will tell.

I have no regrets about buying the iPhone and would purchase again. Apple has a good history of working out the kinks and I expect nothing less with the iPhone.

Can someone please tell me, how it looks like, when you are typing a lon sms text message?

Does the text field become larger, or is the text going to be "pushed" to the left as you type?

Post a picture:)

The text field expands, meaning your message could fill the entire screen (with all text visible) before you send it. Very useful.

Have you tried the iPhone?
And how is that possible, when you are from UK?

Shut up. I saw it on the engadget iPhone walkthrough.

Regardless, I could have a US friend that has an iPhone, I could be in the US right now on holiday, or ten other reasons. There's no need for the attitude when all I'm doing is trying to help you.

Sorry, but i was just wondering how you knew.
No attitude there.

And thanks a lot.

Great news for you. Hopefully, you will start to have some fun with your new iPhone and this last couple of days will be a distant memory.

That phone number should be made a sticky. Sounds like the solution for the really tough situations. Have fun! :D Wish I had one...

to anybody that is still having problems with activation go to your att store ask them for a new sim card for your iphone. They will give you a new one and you will start the activation process over. I'd been waiting 22 hours and had nothing went to the att store one of the guys offered it cause he heard it was helping and low and behold an hour after activation i was up and running

WiFi Signal Strength / Range

I am curious about wifi signal strength as compared to a MacBook Pro or MacBook. If you are near the maximum distance from the base station on a MPB, does iPhone still get a wifi signal? Thanks!
