... if you close your eyes and wish real hard can you make them an iPhone?
Didn't think so. :p

I can attest to the fact that this is true, as evidenced by my unsuccessful attempts to do exactly what you described to my Treo 650 after finally getting to use an iPhone.

Which OS are you using? If you're using Windows... I don't know. However, if you're using OSX, you really may want to consider Safari. Browsing is a whole lot more elegant- and it's faster.

PWR!

Safari is slowed down by all the ads, which is why I use Firefox on OSX. If Safari had a good ad blocker, I'd use it though.

Well, as much as I hate cell phones, I broke down and tried an iPhone today at the Apple store. I have to say- It is one cool device. The touchscreen alone is reason enough to want one. BUT- I still hate cell phones. No iPhone for me!

EDGE Service Very Bad Today

Using my iPhone with EDGE yesterday was fine. However, today, for the last 2 hours, has been unreliable --- web access timing out, weather updates failing all because of flaky EDGE. I am guessing that with more and more iPhone users, the EDGE network near me is being overwhelmed.

Does anyone have similar experience?

I just came from a 700p which is a EVDO, 3G device... and surfing the web on my iPhone isn't very much slower... and is a hell of a lot more elegant.

Works great except for a few things that need changing /adding. My only big complaint is forcing 3rd party apps via Web 2.0. I tried to read scriptures at church via one of the web apps, but I was only getting 1 bar or no service. This will be a big problem in the future unless they enable local data storage (rumored in the works) or real apps.

Ugh, yet another problem with the phone. ATT appears to drop to zero bars every now and then, in stores, elevators etc. Not unusual for a cell phone, but what is ususual is if I attempt to make a call when there are no bars, the phone throws up a BAD SIM error on the screen, and the only way around the issue is to completely turn off the phone. Apparently Apple couldn't afford testers for these clunker phones, so they let us pay for the privilege.

Yeah, that's it, because you are having a problem it means that Apple didn't do any testing.

Right....

I can't help thinking some of that is the archaic Palm OS and Blazer web browser; Blazer really seems to choke on stuff, so even with EVDO I don't think a Palm-based system gets much advantage out of it.

My Treo 650 with Blazer chokes on sites too (loads things much slower than the iPhone).

anyone else having the problem with the iphone resending emails that you send out? I cant seem to filter it. If anyone can help, that would be awesome! thanks

I get this too, but bars drop when I'm not moving from full to almost nothing. Waiting a minute or two and it restores itself. Haven't got the SIM error though.

Not sure how I feel about that as flash seems to be very outdated. Many web developers are straying from it as it taxes bandwidth and is outdated in general. There are new things to come in the works.

What? You need to get out more or something. Seriously.

"Outdated??" So outdated that 96% of web users have Adobe Flash on their browsers! I guess these browsers also are wearing platform shoes.

Youtube.com, Google Video and Myspace Video all use Flash as their standard media-player. Even though YouTube struck a deal with Apple about showing YouTube videos in the h.264 format for the iPhone, Flash is still being used and probably will be for a while. You think YouTube is going to get ALL their visitors to start downloading Apple's QuickTime player all of a sudden? No. I believe they will still have both formats living on different servers for different markets.

Most specialty sites for companies (promoting a company's products, services - basically any type of promotional campaining) all use Flash. These companies include the U.S. Army, Neiman Marcus, GM, Landrover, Levis, Microsoft, Cisco Systems, Nike, Pepsi, Coca-Cola, ALL major movie companies, ALL major record companies, BMW . . . . the list goes on and on and on.

While I agree on all your other points you were making, this one you are trying to make is really outdated. Just because YOU don't like them or have no need for them doesn't make it oudated. Sorry. I couldn't agree less.

I think anyone arguing this much about Flash needs to get out more.

a couple quick thoughts

1) Appleinsider is reporting that flash is being worked on for a future software update. Isn't that the beautiful thing about the iPhone relative to most smartphones - we can get updates every week or month from apple in a way that my treo has never seen. Apple knows flash is important and I think it will get worked out.

2) People keep writing that you can't d/l PDFs from the web. Its true you can't d/l them and store them somewhere, but you can certain read PDFs on the web no problem. I haven't bought one yet (the Santa Monica store only had 4GB iPhones left when I went it) but I played with one (yes, ma, it really is the future) and could d/l PDFs from the web in order to read them.

3) To add to the growing chorus, the keyboard was fine. After two minutes of use, I'd say it was close to as easy to use as my Treo 700p keyboard and I can only imagine how fast it will be (a) in a month and (b) when Apple enables all apps to use a landscaped mode keyboard.

4) How can they not have a real "to do" function? And how can they not have a function to select and delete multiple emails at once. I'm sure these will get fixed in the coming months. If one imagines a similar evolution for the iPhone as what happened to the iPod over 5 years of upgrades, we're in for a wonderful ride.

Well when your BUSINESS is designing Flash web sites for large corporations (as is mine), it's something I know a little something about and have some interest in it. That's all.

I was actually writing something on the subject (of Flash) when I read this post.

Some of us actually make a good living off of Flash as opposed to just watching Flash videos of squirrels water skiing on YouTube.

What it be so bad if you actually wrote about something that you did for a living? Or is that not a life?

Indeed; in the two years I've owned my Treo 650, Palm's only done a handful of firmware updates (and those were to fix glaring problems/issues, for the most part).

When the Treo 680 came out, I actually liked the new phone dialer app they came up with. But can I get it for the $399 Treo 650 I bought 2 years ago? Nope, I'd have to pay another $199 just to get a Treo 680 (which is in all other respects using the same tired old Palm OS that Palm seems incapable of improving on).

So yeah; I know people complain about $599 for the iPhone....... but when I compare that to $399 two years ago for my Treo 650 + $199 to upgrade to a Treo 680 just to get an improved phone dialer app; it doesn't seem so bad.

Even though YouTube struck a deal with Apple about showing YouTube videos in the h.264 format for the iPhone,

BINGO. Flash has been around for a long time and is still used, but my point was that there are other technologies in the works and flash may soon be a thing of the past (sorry, but maybe you should update that resume)... and chill out dude, your rant was funny, you need to relax.

Just because YOU don't like them or have no need for them doesn't make it oudated. Sorry. I couldn't agree less.

It's really fantastic that you don't agree with my point, but the over dramatic and rude tone in your response needs to be curtailed a bit. CAPITALIZING LETTERS TO MAKE SOMEONE FEEL INFERIOR IS ANNOYING.

The more I communicate online in forums, etc the more I wonder where people have left their respect. In the end, would you speak to a stranger in person with the same tone?

I totally agree with you. People tend to let their egos grow on the web, just because it's the web, but it wouldn't be this way if you two were to sit 5 feet away from each other, discussing the same thing. HA, gotta love it.

Anyway, so the iPhone is the "future" as most want to put it, in my opinion. There's one thing in particular that just amazes me each time I use mine: the user interface.

The way Apple designers incorporated everything together with the phone is just amazing. Not one small detail is left out, which didn't really surprise me, but how seamless it is I just can't seem to grip.

The speed of the phone is phenomenal. I've used/demoed just about ever Treo and Blackberry that has come out, and they're all so clunky and laggy with their UI's. From the touch-screen to moving from application to application, it's really snappy.

About the infamous keyboard - it needs some getting used to. Before the phone had come out, I had my doubts like everyone else, but once I tried out it in the store I started to get the hang of it about 3 minutes from playing around in the notes app. However, it would benefit greatly if a software update would allow to use landscape mode in all programs.

I did find one bug, so far. When I'm listening to my music from the ipod, I'll go to the browser and either the music stops playing about a minute into using the browser, or the browser shuts down and goes to the Home screen. It's a bit annoying, but I'm pretty sure it'll get fixed in the next Software Update.

So far I'm really liking my iPhone, and I can't wait to see the features that come along through Apple. Let's hope I'm gonna get my 10 hours and $650 worth from it. :)

search provided some pretty decent results, especially using "battery" and "speaker." not seeing too many complaints about the phone portion either.

good luck

The battery lasted my an entire day of messing around with everything-- playing music, videos, browsing the web, youtube, calls, etc (You can imagine how much I played with it on its first and second days) and it still had around ~1/4 of its battery remaining so in other words, it's really great.

Voice quality through the ear piece is excellent. Better than my old Sidekick 3, Motorola V300, and Sony w600i. The speaker is pretty good too, but a little on the weak side. Playing bass-heavy music through the speaker produces pops and cracks so it's really not a good boom box.

Oh and as a phone in general it's great. People were saying it takes 6 screen taps to make a call but that's total BS. Here's what really happens.

1. Press Home button to wake iPhone
2. Slide finger to unlock screen
3. Tap Phone icon
4. Tap favorites list/ Contacts list/ Keypad
5. Make call.

Sometimes you can even skip step 4 if you left the phone app on favorites last. Answering calls works like this: The iPhone wakes itself up and instead of a unlock slider being displayed, a 'Slide to Answer' slider is displayed, along with the caller's picture taking up the entire display and information such as name and number.
Hope that helps.

Oh, and here's something you might of not known, the unlock screen you get when powering up the iPhone's screen changes a lot. By default it displays your wallpaper and a unlock slider, but when charging you get a big green 3d looking battery showing how much charge is left. If you got a SMS it'll show you a preview of it, and if you missed a call it'll show you who called.

And EVERYTHING is done with smooth, flowing transitions. It's amazing to watch.
