haha you find thumb tyuping impossible? Do you have french manicures? i type faster on my iphone than i ever have any other phone and its getting close to the speed of which i type on my computer, which is about 88wpm. im at 55wpm on the iphone, which is damn fast...

I did that typing test and I'm at 55 or more WPM....and I rarely use SMS. Took me a total of 10-15 minutes to get proficient.

To the poor guy who can't figure it out..Aren't there meds available for alzheimers??

"'m saying that telling other people that they must be lacking in critical thought just because they like/enjoy the iPhone, is really ridiculous."

I'm hardly making that simplistic argument.

"I don't even want to get into the rest of this though."

Fair enough. But those things really ARE the issue. And to isolate the wave of publicity and devotion this device has raised from the rest of what is h appening in our culture...

Just one example:

Far more people have gossiped in fascination about the iPhone than have informed themselves about the torture being done in their name -- the renditions, the waterboarding, the violations of Geneva conventions.

When people say "well you can't compare the two things" -- in a sense they are right. One is frivilous and beneath adult discussion in importance. The other is about defining our society and our future.

When our grandchildren ask us about what we were doing in 2007, do you think they will ask "did you get an iPhone?" or "Did you know about the torture, and why didn't you do something?"
Most likely neither...Who are you kidding??

Gee, this thread is full of "discussions". My head hurts...

Anyway, on to my review:

*Calling is a pleasure.
I used many more steps with my Razr. In fact, I hated having to go to a name in the Razr as I'd be scrolling down forever. I had a lot of contacts with many numbers each so it was never easy to find the number I needed. I did employ and enjoy the voice dialing. (and my self-made ringtones).
*Visual voicemail is...is...LOVE!
Finally, I actually will get my messages as they arrive rather than once every two weeks. I love that the phone alerts me as to who's call I missed and who left voicemail.
*Edge works better than expected.
*Typing took me 1 second to master. Auto-correct brings it up to same speed as on a keyboard (with better spelling and less editing).
*Speakers are good enough to listen to music without headphones - Yay.
*Timer comes in real handy.
*Ditto Google Maps!
*YouTube is a blast when you're waiting.
I've been lucky in that everywhere that I've needed to entertain myself, I was able to connect using their WiFi.
*Battery is fine considering all the use - would like more battery time though.
While I'm on the "would likes"...Would like my own ringtones. Would like voice dialing but the Recent & Favorites lists make it not totally vital.

I'm sure I've missed a couple of things that I adore but in general, I love the phone and really appreciate the visual aspect. I, for one, relate in a visual way and this is the first phone that I feel connected to as I use it. There is a subcounscious rightness in it's use.

The big downside - I'm using more minutes as I actually like using the phone and I lost my 9000+ rollover as I had to get a new ATT account because I had a "business" account. Oh well....

the idea that the iphone is HARD to use as a phone, is RIDICULOUS.

1) tap phone
2) tap number
OR
2) dial number

ZOMG! That's SOOOOOOO difficult. I feel incredibly sorry for ANYONE who has to do that.... I can't believe it doesn't just read your mind and call the person you're thinking of :rolleyes::rolleyes:

I agree that I don't find the iPhone tough to use at all.

Slightly complicated the first week? Yes...i got frustrated at times figuring stuff out.

But eventually you get used to it and it becomes much easier.

Using iPhone out of the country (UK)

I just returned from a week in the UK, and here are some impressions on how the iPhone worked while on the road in cities such as London as well as outlying cities and rural areas.

Pros
1. The iPhone worked on O2 and Vodaphone networks even in obscure small hotels and rural locations when there was no broadband access.
2. Speed was very slow for web browsing. Email worked fine.
3. Setup of international roaming via AT&T was not too tough. The default set up does not include international roaming even if the device is roam-ready. You have to call. The international roaming desk does not open until 10am and it took 20 minutes to get an operator to assist even calling at 10:01!
4. Sound quality was excellent.
5. Charging up the iPhone via the laptop is a stroke of genius -- you can charge both the laptop and the iPhone with only one travel adaptor.
6. Sound quality was excellent.
7. Google maps include UK -- huge bonus. Google directions in the UK are widely known to be dysfunctional and having a map in your hand is a huge, huge advantage.
8. SMS worked great and that is a popular functionality in the UK -- big advantage.

Cons
1. The AT&T international roaming plans are limited. 20MB transfer limit on data with a 12 month minimum contract at $20 per month. Thereafter the cost is $0.02 per KB - yikes! Choosing international roaming costs $5.95 per month, does not include all countries, and only brings that rate down $.30 per minute in the UK.
2. People were constantly borrowing my iPhone to get web access in remote areas and then complaining about the download speed. In one case I pointed out to a friend that taking 2 minutes to download a page is far better than driving 45 minutes to an internet cafe, he laughed at me for some reason. I think Apple is going to get a lot of flack about this, because slow downloads frustrate people for some reason even more than non-access.
3. Safari locked up after 8 open pages and it is not intuitive to my friends why it is locking up so they were frustrated.
4. BIGGEST NIGHTMARE. Visual Voicemail does not work in the UK. You are offered a one-touch dial to a voice mail server, but the call fails because it does not include the country code (even when international assist is turned on) and there's no way I can figure out to reprogram the number. When I returned to the US all my messages were GONE.
5. It is really tough to keep the iPhone charged simply because there are so many reasons to use it, so I experienced the 20% or below charge "red light" much more overseas than in the US.
6. The lack of flash support caused one of my friends a lot of grief as many speciality sports sites are flash based and he was starved of scores.
7. One friend found it impossible to access his email via Safari because the usc.edu site for some reason does not support cookies on the iPhone Safari version so he had to re-login constantly.
8. Safari crashed about 25% of the time on 500KB+ downloads.

If there's any positive feedback to this post, I'll update this next week re: access in Italy.

I'm on my iPhone now as my wife os getting a tattoo and I must say this thing is great. I don't have any problems with the keyboard and typing is pretty good. The edge isn't so bad either. So far I'm loving this thing so much. I guess I don't have many complaints. This is my fanciest phone to date. My last phone was a lg chocolate which was pretty plain jane.

I live in Europe, so i still don't have iPhone yet, but i hope sooner or later, when it arrives in Europe iPhone will became mine... There are so many opinions about iPhone in Web, some people dissapointing, some take sleep with iPhone in bed. One is for sure iPhone - is Trully Amazing First-of-the-kind Cellphone. And i think iPhone-Mania continues to grow rapidly...:apple:

How much a iPhone (4G) in Europe??

I wish the iPhone was an iPhone

I sincerely wish that the iPhone worked well and did all it's supposed to do. Too bad that it's sooooooo slow. And I'm not talking about EDGE.

I'm talking about how how the little device gets and how slow it is to use the WEB 2.0 apps. By the time I pull up my shopping list or see what are the show times for the movies I wanna see, my boyfriend already called Voice Connect (*08 - free from your AT&T phone).

Correct me if I am wrong....but if you are out and trying to access movie times and shopping lists using web 2.0 then wouldn't that mean that you were using the Edge network? Which in turn would explain the speed...maybe when you're trying to troll these boards to promote a lame blog, you should do a better job of knowing what it is you're talking about

Great things, not so great and the uhhh never mind it's dealt with things!

Yes I will admit that I waited a month for all the bugs n stuff to be found out... Thanks to those who jumped in feet first!!!

Just so you know there are two iPhones in our house, with our 15yr old begging for one as well, so knowing my hubby that'll make 3!!

Great things..

The international clocks so i can figure out which time zone hubby is in.

The map finder service...ended up at a little Italian place in the city where I live and work, had no idea it was there to begin with. Also it has new streets on there that aren't on our recent Mapsco hard copy books, Very useful in finding addresses as I work as an officer.

A very intuitive phone to use, doesn't take huge amounts of brain power, just a little research when thing don't quite work right.

E.mail when delivered are easy to see and reply to etc

Love the ease of txt messaging..... no seriously... love it... the whole convo being in one place is just... well so danged easy to keep track of.

Not so great things...

The e.mail was a bugger to set up, I had a alias on my hubbys account and couldn't set it so that just my mail appeared on my phone, in the end paid an extra couple of bucks and got a new apple e.mail and it was fine after that (forwarded everything under my alias to my new account). Seemed kind of stupid they didn't allow for that.

Still have problems with the safari quitting unexpectedly, but again you guys had already figured out a temporary solution, just hope they fix it soon.

If I have the phone on airplane mode (yes i know I can send or receive calls etc) but no provision seem to have been made for voicemail when using that option. Maybe it's just me I don't know.

Neither good nor bad... just observations...

Had a problem adapting to the typing as I have long manicured nails... but in the end all it took was typing with more of the side of my thumbs pads instead of the whole pad.

Had problems importing my old cell phone contacts, I only have macs in my house and all the software seemed to only work on windows based machines. Solve... open it on a friends computer and save to a csv file and mail it to myself.

The iPod on landscape is sometimes a booger to work with, I just close iPod and start again... yeah I know there is probably some other fancy whizzy way of dealing with it.. but...I want... no need :) it to work now dagnammit.

All in all I like my iPhone, hubby likes his and the 15yr old will probably love hers as well.

With it's bugs and little quirks I still give it a ://images.macrumors.com/vb/images/icons/icon14.gif

So very very glad I moved from Nextel

Consulting company IDC has published today the report concerning situation on cellular communication market, noticing, that iPhone, no matter how insignificant sales amount is on that moment, can render on the industry absolutely non-comparable huge influence.

However, first, some statistics. Total amount of sold cellular phones in 2007 spring is 273 million devices. From them indisputable leader remains Nokia, which share is 100 million sold devices or 37 percent of the market (last year - 29 percent). According to the manufacturer, smartphones of series N and E which get to the one segment with iPhone has been played their role very very good.
