Get a go-phone account. They can't do anything about it then.

I get 200 minutes (I'm not a big talker)
Unlimited Text
No Data (Data Block is on)
I get to use my iPhone
No contract.

Just for $50 per month. I like this method best.

I dunno. Spending $50 a month JUST to send text messages? That seems like a lot of money to me for only that.

There really aren't any other phones you enjoy half as much as an iPhone? Because you could sure as heck spend a lot less than that if texting is your only goal.

"Interesting. This is the second person this week that has posted that at&t has automatically added the plan to their account"

Yeah, but i think the difference is that the other person bought an iPhone from the owner, so why would he HAVE to pay the monthly data fee? It's like: My brother bought the iPhone 1st gen when it launched. If i buy his iPhone, why would i need to pay $30 (in the 1st gen's case is $20) if his contract already expired? What if I wanna use the iPhone with WiFi only? ATT shouldn't make me pay the data plan. When you buy a Blackberry from your cousin, or a seller thru ebay, you can use your blackberry without data (in fact, i had a BB8300 with blocked data access) I shouldnt pay for the subsidy when i didnt agree for a new contract or get the iPhone's special pricing...

Because the iPhone is the only phone I have (meaning... I don't use a lan-line). It needs to make/receive calls and I want unlimited texting.

I also already said that I prefer to text with the iPhone because it's very fast and comfortable (I hate pressing little mechanical keys).

Fact is... I'd rather pay $50/mo. for unlimited text and 200 minutes than $100/mo. for 450 minutes, unlimited text and data (especially since I hardly ever used my 450 minutes or my billions of rollover minutes... and I hardly used data either).

Yeah, there's other phones that are a lot cheaper for texting, but those phone are ones I do not prefer.

The iPhone isn't *only* for texting. I also use it for iPod, notes and reminders.

Now, I can list many of posts that are very helpful.

Go ahead.

While you're at it... explain how that post that you posted was helpful in any way.

Now this! Is the most coherent thing ever said by you! Also, I agree with the first part.

Go ahead.

Read it and weep. Also, useful in this thread as in refuting some of your exaggerated and dumb posts.

Nice.... 2 years ago. Bravo.

You're just jealous that I've beaten the system and nothing is going to happen.

Muahahahahahahahahahahahaha!

How much do you pay for your iPhone plan?

Apparently I missed where you specified the time limit... in any case, you beating the system I could care less.

Anyone can beat the system if you know how to. No, I'm not jealous. Also, I pay $63 a month. I do use all my minutes (400/450), I consume 6GB in data (+ tethering) and eat through 1500 texts. Why so low on the bill side? Well, I too beat the system... and it seems I do a better job at it than you do.

... wait, why am I responding...?

For you:

Spaz, you ok on the personal end? You seem a lot more negative than before.

Anyhow, you're obviously using the iPhone as some sort of symbol to fit in or try to fit in, and certainly have under-valued it.

Well, people are getting upset because they're in a contract and they're not following the contract and they wonder why AT&T is punishing them.

I'm simply giving people a way to enjoy the iPhone without worry about AT&T and their stupid contracts.

He and your brother have to because AT&T says they have to, and they agreed to it. The terms and conditions say "iPhones require a data plan" not, "iPhones require a data plan when purchased at discounted pricing".

When you buy a Blackberry from your cousin, or a seller thru ebay, you can use your blackberry without data (in fact, i had a BB8300 with blocked data access)

Not any longer. About 6 months ago you got a little notice on your bill telling you that the terms of service had changed, and that by keeping your service active you agreed to the new terms. And those terms now say that any smartphone requires a data plan, even one that you buy from eBay.

I shouldnt pay for the subsidy when i didnt agree for a new contract or get the iPhone's special pricing...

Feel free to write AT&T a letter and complain, but the chances of them listening to you are pretty much zero.

still working

I am still using the $10.00 medianet plan becuase:

Question:
What is a Data Plan?
What data plans are available?
Answer:
To learn more about what is included in a Data Plan, please visit Messaging & Data for more information.

Data Plan Requirements for Smartphones

Effective September 6, 2009, new and upgrade Smartphone customers will need to subscribe to a data plan. Data plans allow our customers to fully utilize their device without the worry of an unusually high bill. These customers will receive a text message confirming the data plan requirement upon activation. The data plan requirement is also clearly labeled in our rate plan brochures terms and conditions.

An eligible data plan is required for certain devices, including iPhones and other designated Smartphones. Eligible data plans cover data usage in the U.S. and do not cover international data usage and charges. If it is determined that the customer is using an iPhone or other designated Smartphone without an eligible data plan, AT&T reserves the right to add an eligible data plan to the account and bill the customer the appropriate monthly fee.

Beginning November 1, 2009, customers who activate, upgrade, or switch their device to a Smartphone will automatically have the appropriate data plan added to their account if one is not already present. Smartphone customers that activate prior to November 1st, will not have a data plan added to their account unless they decide to upgrade to a new Smartphone. Then, the data plan requirement will apply and the customer cannot revert back.

Hope This Helps, they tried adding it but I pointed this out on their site and they reverted me back to the $10.00 month plan becuase I never upgraded or changed a thing.

If AT&T's network sees your phone start reporting a different IMEI, then you've just done a "new activation" whether you call and formally tell them or not. If you continue using the iPhone or whatever smartphone it is, you'll just be switched right back to the $30 plan the next time a sweep hits your account.

Its been about 3 months, so hopefully not. :)

I find it kind of funny that AT&T has updated their systems to do sweeps in order to get more money from customers, but is unable to provide the tethering option for the iPhone that they promised. This should tell people what kind of company they are. Maybe with all this new revenue from iPhone data plans, they can invest it in bringing the services that they advertise. I really hope the class action lawsuit goes through with the false promise of services.

The iPhone nor any smart phone is NOT eligible for the $10 a month media net plan of the dumb phones out there.

You are required to play the $30 a month for data on it. key word is NOT

Now for others the $10 media net plan for dumb phones is only for people who have unlimited messaging on their family plans.

No, you don't LIKE the answer. iPhone under contract with AT&T means $30 a month mandatory data plan.

Did someone not tell me something???!!!!?!?!?

I came home today to my mother telling me she recieved a sms from AT&T today stating she will not be able to use her unlocked iphone 3g with the current plan. "Did you know a data plan is required for your iphone? For whatever reason, our records indicate your iPhone did not have the correct data plan. We have added the appropirate data plan. Call 611 or go to att.com/iPhoneplans for info" Should i be scared? What is going on....im freaking out

Ignore those messages from AT&T. There are two different "scare" messages they send out. Whatever you do, don't call AT&T if you don't want the data plan. You will not be charged, I never was even after getting the messages from them that they already added it to my account.

If you’re using an iPhone on AT&T and did not want data, you needed to call AT&T and have data blocked. There is no “appropriate” data plan other than the $30/month plan (or $20/month for 2G’s).

what do u mean ask them to block data? The only reason i unlocked the iphone was so she could use it just for voice and sms. She didnt need the data plan. When you buy the iphone from AT&T, you have to get a data plan, and you pick the minutes you want....reason i unlocked it. its $60 a month instead of $90. Anyways, i dont have to worry about this?

do you know what unlocking means? unlocking is you won't be restricted to the AT&T carrier. so you can use it on T-mobile or Any GSM network. I think your talking about Jail breaking but regardless ATT requires a Data plan as -aggie- said they can see what Model iPhone you have Jailbroken or Unlocked as long as you are on there network. but as you said you don't have to worry about it so next thread!
