Production on the iPhone Fold is behind schedule, but the device is still slated to launch in fall 2026, reports DigiTimes. The site says that production has been pushed back by "roughly one to two months," but Apple has not communicated any launch delays to suppliers. Apple is still planning for a 2026 launch, which suggests a tighter production schedule.

Apple planned to begin iPhone Fold mass production in June 2026, but mass production has now slipped to early August. Some rumors have suggested that Apple is having more manufacturing problems than expected with the Engineering Validation Test phase that the iPhone Fold is in right now, but other rumors suggest that won't lead to delays.

Last week, Japanese site Nikkei said that the engineering delays could cause Apple to delay the launch of the iPhone Fold until 2027, but Bloomberg's Mark Gurman said the iPhone Fold remains on track to launch "around the same time" or "soon after" the iPhone 18 Pro models in September 2026.

DigiTimes' report reconciles the two separate launch timing rumors, indicating that there is indeed a delay in the test phase, but Apple may be able to make up ground during the mass production phase. Prior to mass production, the iPhone Fold will still need to go through Design Validation Testing and Production Validation Testing.

A delay in the mass production timeline could cause serious supply chain shortages, and iPhone Fold availability is likely to be constrained. When we hear rumors about launch issues this early in an iPhone cycle, it typically leads to severe launch shortages and a device that sells out in minutes during pre-orders.

The iPhone Fold is expected to cost between $2,000 and $2,500. It will be Apple's first foldable device, with a 5.5-inch display when closed and a 7.8-inch display when open. More about the device can be found in our iPhone Fold roundup.

Folks, don't be fooled by Apple's tutti-frutti, honey-baloney, plastic banana, good time, rock-n-roll Apple PR "delays" to build hype. This is a common tactic of Apple's PR, to astroturf a belief that Apple is so bleeding edge that they are still working on features of the device, which has caused them to delay things. In reality, Apple locked-in the device over a year ago and tthis delay is either non-existent (pure astroturf "hype") or there is an issue with mass production that is delaying shipments but will have no effect on the device design, features, etc.

This is a pretty high risk endeavor for Apple. The iPhone brand is their crown jewel. Apple can afford to drop the ball on a new product line like the Vision Pro (let's face it, that brand isn't doing great). This iPhone fold design is pretty unorthodox compared to the much more well established competitors. So it pretty much has to go right, AND at least a meaningful proportion of people have to be willing to stomach the price. I'll be sitting this one out but good luck to you Apple!

Well, we've had articles saying it's delayed, and saying it's *not* delayed, but I think this is the first saying that it's both delayed and not delayed at the same time.

It's because some people don't understand the difference between launch and availability. We saw the same stories with iPhone X. No doubt Apple is launching in September, which is obvious. But the supply chain guys on the ground tell the actual story.

I also don't think it will be a huge volume device, if it costs $2k+. Yes initial demand will be huge, because every youtuber & influencer will want to make videos about it, but I don't see that many regular iPhone users spending that much, especially on a first Apple foldable, especially if it lacks so many flagship features of existing Pro phones like Face ID, Magsafe, telephoto zoom, etc.

It remains to be seen if this "passport" style succeeds, after people have been seeing foldables of a different size over the past many years from android makers.

I actually think the last Gurman “report” that was refuting a report saying there was going to be a delay was the first to say “No Delay” but “There may also be a delay”. (Actual words were “The release is six months away and production has yet to ramp up. That means the timing isn’t final.”)

If it was the FIRST folding phone, maybe. But, by now, there’s a good number of folks in the industry that have had years of experience on folding designs.
