This is a pretty high risk endeavor for Apple. The iPhone brand is their crown jewel. Apple can afford to drop the ball on a new product line like the Vision Pro (let's face it, that brand isn't doing great). This iPhone fold design is pretty unorthodox compared to the much more well established competitors. So it pretty much has to go right, AND at least a meaningful proportion of people have to be willing to stomach the price. I'll be sitting this one out but good luck to you Apple!
This is a pretty mature market. It was very smart for Apple to not rush to be first here for that very reason.

The Vision Pro is something different. The Vision Pro is a device that had no business being released before the tech was mature, which won’t be, at best, until 2029 (probably closer to 2032 given recent roadmaps of pass-through lenses). In fact, reporting was that many inside Apple did not want to release a half-baked product but Tim wanted the new product line released under his tenure, so he forced it through as a developer device with a consumer version expected by 2027 or 2028 (which is still way too early).

That is not the case with an iPhone which has a folding screen.

i'll wait till gen 3. i'm sure Apple will add some great feature in gen1 but will definitely put hard limitation on some other important feature, literally letting the device simply breath and survive. they are not going to pour all the features in the first gen itself.

That’s part of the fun for the foldable, will probably be getting meaningful upgrades every year again so it gets more exciting.

A delay in the mass production timeline could cause serious supply chain shortages, and iPhone Fold availability is likely to be constrained. When we hear rumors about launch issues this early in an iPhone cycle, it typically leads to severe launch shortages and a device that sells out in minutes during pre-orders.
Any actual examples to back that up?

Think announcement will happen in September with a staggered launch. Only a handful of countries will be getting it immediately and more countries will be getting it every 3 weeks after that, kind of similar to iPhone X launch. Price should most likely start at $1999.

I also don't think it will be a huge volume device, if it costs $2k+. Yes initial demand will be huge, because every youtuber & influencer will want to make videos about it, but I don't see that many regular iPhone users spending that much, especially on a first Apple foldable, especially if it lacks so many flagship features of existing Pro phones like Face ID, Magsafe, telephoto zoom, etc.

It remains to be seen if this "passport" style succeeds, after people have been seeing foldables of a different size over the past many years from android makers.
It could be huge among global travel, elite jet-set type, too. Especially if it’s passport size.

Usual nonsense to build up FOMO. Makes people jam that ‘buy’ button on sale day. Works every time.
That's not true! I don't 'jam' buttons. I gracefully and lightly touch that buy button. After refreshing the Apple Store app a hundred times come launch day. 😅

Folks, don't be fooled by Apple's tutti-frutti, honey-baloney, plastic banana, good time, rock-n-roll Apple PR "delays" to build hype. This is a common tactic of Apple's PR, to astroturf a belief that Apple is so bleeding edge that they are still working on features of the device, which has caused them to delay things. In reality, Apple locked-in the device over a year ago and tthis delay is either non-existent (pure astroturf "hype") or there is an issue with mass production that is delaying shipments but will have no effect on the device design, features, etc.
"to astroturf a belief"...

Again with this nonsense? Lol. Every year we get the same back and forth about something. So what if it’s released a month late. It will just add to the anticipation and exposure anyway.
I agree, it's almost like these "sources" are trying to leak things to the press to implore consumers to be more excited about getting the "first" constrained product. This article is probably a copy/paste for MacRumors every year.

Production on the iPhone Fold is behind schedule, but the device is still slated to launch in fall 2026, reports DigiTimes. The site says that production has been pushed back by "roughly one to two months," but Apple has not communicated any launch delays to suppliers. Apple is still planning for a 2026 launch, which suggests a tighter production schedule.

Apple planned to begin iPhone Fold mass production in June 2026, but mass production has now slipped to early August. Some rumors have suggested that Apple is having more manufacturing problems than expected with the Engineering Validation Test phase that the iPhone Fold is in right now, but other rumors suggest that won't lead to delays.

Last week, Japanese site Nikkei said that the engineering delays could cause Apple to delay the launch of the iPhone Fold until 2027, but Bloomberg's Mark Gurman said the iPhone Fold remains on track to launch "around the same time" or "soon after" the iPhone 18 Pro models in September 2026.

DigiTimes' report reconciles the two separate launch timing rumors, indicating that there is indeed a delay in the test phase, but Apple may be able to make up ground during the mass production phase. Prior to mass production, the iPhone Fold will still need to go through Design Validation Testing and Production Validation Testing.

A delay in the mass production timeline could cause serious supply chain shortages, and iPhone Fold availability is likely to be constrained. When we hear rumors about launch issues this early in an iPhone cycle, it typically leads to severe launch shortages and a device that sells out in minutes during pre-orders.

The iPhone Fold is expected to cost between $2,000 and $2,500. It will be Apple's first foldable device, with a 5.5-inch display when closed and a 7.8-inch display when open. More about the device can be found in our iPhone Fold roundup.

none of this is true

Heres how its going to play out, based off past experences. Whats likely is they will announce it in September as usual. Either their will be limited stock (But they wont say that) and sell it at the usual iphone time, or delay it until October/November. It will be scarse at first, like all new iphones at the end of the year/ holiday season then come Janurary it will be more easer to secure one.

Worst case, they hold off the launch until January to mark the 20th Anniversary of the launch of the Iphone on January 9th, 2007. So they have a natural built in delay window with a backup plan, launch it at the 20th Anniversary date.

Works out for me personally cause my 16 pro max is still going strong, im not wealthy, and gives me a few more months to save up the atleast 2 grand to buy the damn thing.

This is why you always skip the first gen of a new Apple product. In fact, because development of the 2nd gen folding iPhone is already in the works, it is best to skip the first two generations and wait for a 3rd gen, with consumer feedback improvements.

However, I have no doubt this will sell incredibly well. I’m only pointing out that the YoY improvements will be stark for the first 2-3 years.
Probably best to skip the third gen, too, because it’s undoubtedly bound to be better in the 4th gen. Actually, now that I think about it, customer feedback would make the 5th gen even better than that. Oh, and technical improvements… those will make the 6th gen even better!

Yeah, the rich folks will get it, but not the general public. I rarely see android folds in the wild here, because they are also very expensive.

sounds like the Apples must be confident about quality and success of this device that may or may not even exists. If this story has the same plot as the mysterious Glasses that turned out as that Vision Pro abomination no one can effort, expect something looking like and as big as a MBP with two Displays for 5000 bucks. 😂

not sure how a headset which is purely at home device can be compared to a phone. market is there for foldables seeing as 25 millon were sold last year with year on year growth and that is with apple not at market. most will still go with the pros but if the marketing is good i can see many going for this if it's labelled ultra

It would actually be brilliant marketing to show someone holding it along with their passport, if it is indeed, the same size. It would make me want it.

My wallet is okay waiting.

But make no mistake, when the fold is released, my wallet will submit.
You’re Apple’s favorite customer, someone who tests their first generation products. Then again, Apple’s folding iPhone is being built on the experience of Samsung and other manufacturers multiple generations of folding phones so maybe not as first generation as it could be.

One day everything is on track and the next day, it’s not followed by more back and forth. Good thing I don’t live my tech life based on rumors. Otherwise, I would get motion sickness.

My wallet will be ready, however— I’ll see what features the Fold has and what it’s missing first when compared to Pro Max. Worth remembering that the original iPhone, iPad, and iPhone X were first gen products, too, and those were pretty awesome.
